Oh no, how the hell will mangagamer recover without all that free advertising on fuwanovel and his blog?

Heh heh, cum journalist.
>>
Has anyone else noticed that video game journalists tend to be some of the most easily butthurt people on the internet? Let's find out if it lets me post that word.

They've got such massive egos too, even if they haven't actually provided much of worth. I think an indie dev put it well when he pointed out that the industry could live without journalists, but journalists can't live without the industry.

Good_Haro laying the smackdown on him in that thread. I'm not sure what he expects, linking to fan patches of games from mangagamer partners on their own forums.
>>
It's hardly ``epic drama'' when it's just one guy who isn't remotely important, famous, or even female (I explicitly mention female because for some reason, drama around females tends to create much bigger waves).
>>
>>14207540
He should claim he's female inside and MG is transphobic.
>>
>>14207393
My assumption is that they like getting butthurt because the holier-than-thou garbage they write afterwards gets them more views. I don't see why people follow the "drama" they try to create.
>>
>>14207581
I do understand why people would follow it, actually. Because above all else, people are the hungriest for drama. They don't care about positive things, they want a show. And that's what they get with drama. This is why sites like Kotaku and Polygon are so popular despite being horrible - they go for drama first and foremost.

Asteriskfags on suicide watch.
>>
>>14207778
As usual I'm not gonna open that image but it's annoying how people keep comparing Asterisk to Chivalry of a Failed Knight. The latter is way better, and honestly you can make anything sound similar if you get vague enough with your comparisons. Baldr Sky is basically the exact same thing as a Sakura game.
>>
>>14207817
How's the former? I liked the latter's LN but the comments about the anime makes me think that either it's trying to be too clever or missing the point entirely.
>>
>>14207818
The former is honestly not bad either (some pretty nice animation at times too), it's just that neither them are particularly groundbreaking in terms of their premise. My point is basically just that similarities to bad things don't automatically make something bad. Asterisk has already been confirmed for split cour too so that's gonna be around for a while.

What is it you've heard about the Rakudai anime? Incidentally that show also has the best OP of the season.
>>
>>14207824
I heard that it plays the generic harem bits a lot more straight than the LNs themselves, doing the standard tsundere shtick even when the characters aren't actually like so. And reducing cool moments that displays the protagonist's skills.

I understand what you mean about premise as before reading Rakudai, I thought it had one of the most painfully generic premise too, but actually reading it turned out to be a fun, full of great action and sweet romance that you wouldn't realize from the surface layer.
>>
>>14207174
So let me get this straight, since it seems to be flying under the radar entirely again (as expected of JAST): JAST promised to release an 'unofficial' uncensor patch to remove the censorship for Shiny Days, which totally made the censorship okay, then just didn't release the uncensor patch?
>>
>>14207824
rakudai anime is so much better than asterisk

I'm probably missing some kind of "irony" here, but first game was translated long before sekai project even thought about licensing it.
>>
>>14207841
Interesting, I didn't get the impression that it was playing it straight, which is one reason why I'm enjoying it so much. And the protagonist has been quite cool. Sounds like people are just being stupid, as usual.

I don't know about that, Demon Master Chris, We Love Master, and Ecchi Mery among others are currently among MG's best selling titles at the moment.

Demon Master Chris is a masterpiece, though.

You know, I have completely forgotten that Subahibi is supposed to come out at this point. There are so many games coming out constantly now, who even has time for the work of some neckbeard like Herkz? May as well not even bother releasing it, because nobody's going to play it.

Really? You weren't expecting the games that are most like Sakura Spirit to sell the best? This is what appeals to people. Low-priced fanservice VNs. There's quite an appeal to MangaGamer too since they can skip the translating part. Honestly, it's not a bad idea at all. There are tons of VNs like this in Japanese that are not worth translating, better to just have some folks whip up English equivalents and focus on translating the real deal games.
>>
>>14208397
It's not surprising given MG's recent releases.
-October 2, The Menagerie
-September 25, A Kiss for the Petals RHWM - All-ages game that's a fandisc to an untranslated game, that can also be bought on Steam.
-August 28, Warrior Princess Asuka: The Final Chapter
-August 14, Beach Bounce
-July 31, Sweet Sweat in Summer
-June 26, Free Friends
-May 29, Forbidden Love with My Wife's Sister
-May 15, Higurashi When They Cry Hou - Ch.1 Onikakushi retranslation
- May 8, Ecchi Mery
-April 17, Amber Breaker

Games, retard. Not VNs. Actual high quality video games with gameplay. Get out of your box.

That said, if you were hoping to show a lack of quality with that image, you didn't do well, considering we've gotten some big VNs over the past few months too. The rate at which VNs are being translated is impressive, when you think back to the years when we were lucky to get two patches in an entire year.

RIP eroge.
>>
>>14208690
Thankfully we have enough untranslated games to last us for the rest of time.
>>
>>14208690
Mugi doesn't even play actual eroge. He's not looking for good ero or good characters, he's looking for hipster/progressive writing with crazy stories. That kind of stuff is in decline, but ero itself is doing well. We will see less titles released in next years, but it would still be more than one could read, if one can enjoy ero/moe stuff.
>>
>>14208722
Is there any way to find how eroge sells in Jap nowday?

There are no actual numbers for professional stuff published. But number of titles per year is nice ballpark estimate, companies cannot operate in red for too long.

>>14208690
Moogy's also declared that there will be only three more high profile eroge, ever. He's already named which three they are. None of them have been released.

Because a couple of his favorite pretentious authors are writing LNs. LNs that aren't even particularly popular at that.

I would say 'I don't know why Mangagamer puts this shit on their site' but I suppose it's for the cash money
>>
>>14209030
MG kind of wants to be the go-to place for anime porn games. Not a bad plan, but there's a lot of shitty games coming out, and the site is bad.
>>
>>14208690
What's so good about looseboy? I hated GSnM
>>
>>14209103
SnK is cool, tbh.
>>
>>14209030
I started playing it but after having to deal with no sounds and coding errors that the developer said he's going to fix next week, I have the game on hold.

I'm not expecting decent writing. It's too soon to expect that from OELVNs.
>>
>>14209030
There's apparently a patch that's supposed to be coming out for that, since the programming is a mess at the moment. They also said they'd try to explain some of the plot points better. I thought they beta tested it, which was why they delayed it for 2 weeks.
>>
>>14208577

Rankings were never mixed, it just defaulted to downloads

Now it picks hardcopies/downloads at random
>>
>>14209142
>I'm not expecting decent writing. It's too soon to expect that from OELVNs.
I personally thought Human Reignition Project had pretty decent writing. Though it's almost all just slice-of-life stuff in the demo, so I don't know if they're also good at writing more serious stuff.

Summer House also had good writing, but that project was never finished.
>>
>>14208508

According to Steamspy 3,000 copies give or take a thousand. It didn't sell well, but that's to be expected given it's a direct sequel to stuff they hadn't yet released. One of the more stupid decisions by MG in recent times.
>>
>>14209544
Its not sequel, its prequel. It explains things before original game.
>>
>>14209544

3000 copies is probably about within mangagamer's expectations, to be honest. It's a short game, so it would have turned a profit with half that. I doubt they're particularly disappointed.

KnS2 though, now that's shaping up to be a big disappointment .
>>
>>14209681
KnS 2 looks great. I wonder why it's doing so badly. Maybe they should get more YT fags to do a let's play.
>>
KnS 2 is obviously a sequel. They need to hype up the previous games to build demand. I wouldn't ever start with part 2.
>>
>>14209845
You don't need to play the original at all though, so it's not that much of a sequel.
>>
>>14209869
That convinces nobody.
>>
>>14209589
It's both actually. The characters post-Snow White's Knight are remembering events from before Maidens of Michael (the first game they appeared in).
>>
>>14209728
Story games have always run the risk of loss for MG, which is why they do so many nukige. Steam is what makes story vns more viable, but the KnS series doesn't have all-ages versions.
>>
>>14209845
>They need to hype up the previous games to build demand.

That's not exactly something that can be done.

Still I can't help but feel that it might have been smarter to colon the game into something Kara no Shoujo: Girl of the Void or something instead of labeling it "the second episode".

Tokisaka is still chasing after Touko and the events are linked with the characters of the first episode and what happend in Cartagra.

Sure you can read it as a stand-alone like a moron but you will not fully enjoy it if you didn't read KnS and Cartagra before. InnoGrey made a whole universe here and it's dumb to start by the end.
I can't wait to see Touji again. People who will start with KnS2 will never know how important she was before.

I can't blame MG for saying that you can read it as a stand-alone because they really need money but it's some hypocritical bullshit here.

"Even Looseboy", like Looseboy is some high standard for VN writing. I cannot believe that this man is actually taken seriously and respected.
>>
>>14208881
He really doesn't.
>>
Are there really idiots here trying to say that Lamento didn't sell well?
>>
>>14211829
Well, Looseboy is one of the most respected visual novel writers in Japan, so I'm not quite sure what are you trying to say.
>>
>>14211867
...No, he isn't. Is Moogy spreading that bullshit too?
>>
I really suspect Moogy does not know Japanese and just regurgitates what he hears from people who allegedly do know the language.
>>
>>14211915
Then we might be living in different Japans.

The VN authors that I hear treated with respect around here are mainly 田中ロミオ, 丸戸史明, 王雀孫, るーすぼーい, 奈須きのこ, and, unfortunately, 麻枝准 and タカヒロ. Other names that I sometimes see come up are 虚淵玄, 正田崇, 瀬戸口廉也, 東出祐一郎, and maybe 日野亘. That's about it.

Then you have people like 健速 and 菅野ひろゆき that used to be highly respected but now are either dead or producing shit.

I see very few other authors ever mentioned by name, instead being called smth like Muv-Luv guy or Muramasa guy (you have to be both good AND prolific for ppl to remember you).

Incidentally, a lot of ppl treat Sharin no Kuni as the best visual novel ever written around here, and almost anybody into VNs knows the name Looseboy.

So, yeah, I have no idea where you're coming from saying that he's not "respected". I can only think of Romeo as a more influential writer in the whole industry.
>>
>>14211867
> most respected
> juukishi scandal

Where do you even get this shit? Noone takes that hack seriously anymore and nobody in VN industry is willing to employ him, that's why he's running away to LNs.

>>
>>14212008
I highly doubt writing one vn that's not even exactly bad, just kind of meh, is quite enough to make ppl forget he gave birth to two of the most influential vns ever. Not to mention, regardless of critical reception, it's among the best selling eroge of the year.

Just having Looseboy's name in the credits boosts sales, so you'd have to be quite a retarded businessman not to want it.

You seem to be trying to bend reality just because you don't like Looseboy. How many of the other 100+ writers that released their eroge this year you can name?
>>
>>14212019
Nerds are just trying to act hipster by disliking Looseboy, Takahiro and Kinoko Nasu because they're popular.
>>
>>14212028

EOP, pls. Nothing he wrote ever "influenced" anything, he's not Urobuchi or even Nasu.
>>
>>14212035

Isn't whose full of moefags? Such type can't possibly appreciate plot centered vn. At least Sharin no Kuni is definitely very good vn and those are rare. "EOP" excuse is not applying here.
>>
>>14212058
So you are not familiar with japanese eroge readers yet dare to make statements about what popular among them and who they respect?
EOPs never cease to amuse me.
>>
>>14212035
You'd sound more convincing if Bokusen wasn't the second most voted eroge on egs this year, and Sharin no Kuni wasn't #1 of all time (even above FSN).

I don't even like Looseboy that much, and I can still tell you're full of shit. Or is google translate you use to read those blogs giving you a skewed picture of things?
>>

>The unfortunate truth is Cartagra hasn't sold enough. The minimum HC print quantity exceeds it's total sales...
This is a very interesting piece of information.
We can already guess that when MG prints hard-copies, they print several hundred units.
>>
>>14215556
>hurr durr this game without a steam version isn't selling well

Classic Doddler.
>>
>>14215530

It's not like MG can just do that. They'd have to get IG to agree and it could end up costing a lot of extra money if the new steam version is considered a "new game"
>>
>>14215530
>>14215558
From what I can tell, not many western fans (read: those that buy games) are fond of games such as KnS. Hence the reason why Cartagra didn't sell well and KnS 2 following the same path (not to mention it's a sequel). KnS actually sold reasonably well (after the LE sold out, MG printed a regular version) because it was reviewed on Kotaku and a youtuber was playing it. If KnS also gets a review on Kotaku and a youtuber gets on it, it's reasonable to expect its sales to grow much more. Anyway, the game is only on pre-order which means that people who know about it are those that have some knowledge of commercial releases of VNs. Time will tell if this release eventually become a success.

On another note, I fear the same will happen with Bokuten because it isn't a happy game.
>>
>>14215120
18+ plot games still run the risk of loss, so it having an all-ages version they can license (OreTsuba never), being able to easily create one (Cho Dengeki Stryker), or it being non-explicit enough to put on Steam (Gahkthun and Yurirei) will make those licenses more appealing to go after.
>>
>>14215556

I personally believe cartagra's sold about 800 copies, so that's interesting information indeed. That would mean the minimum order PCR will take from mangagamer is probably a thousand copy print run.
>>
>>14215649
>Gahkthun
Please note that Gahkthun isn't confirmed for Steam yet. Also, since the game has big boobs you can certainly expect people making an even bigger uproar than they did with Yurirei. I know it seems I am joking but I'm saying this quite seriously.
>>
>>14215048
Good. Happy that this trash is failed.
>>
>>14215649
People keep talking about Gahkthun on Steam, but that still may not be possible. While it's true that Gahkthun doesn't show dicks or vag, from what I understand Yurirei is still a good bit less explicit. Steam is inconsistent as hell so who knows, but I wouldn't get your hopes up.
>>
>>14215569
>From what I can tell, not many western fans (read: those that buy games) are fond of games such as KnS.
Really? I thought the western fanbase loved mystery stories, since they seem so fond of Umineko. Kara no Shoujo is a much darker story though.

>KnS actually sold reasonably well (after the LE sold out, MG printed a regular version)
I remember MG staff mentioning that they shilled the KnS hard copies pretty hard during conventions to sell them, so that probably drove the hard copy sales up.

Given that Kara no Shoujo is MG's 5th best selling game ever as of January of this year, it's a bit surprising its sequel is doing so poorly at the moment. It could just mean that many people never finished the first game, but a worse take away could be that many people didn't end up liking it, so they don't want to purchase its sequel. My theory is that there are a good number of people waiting on a hard copy of it to come out, but since it needs a certain number of digital sales first, they may cause a hard copy of it to not happen.
>>

> read: those that buy games

Yes, as dark as B-movie horror films for 13 years old kids with poor gore.

They really need to start shilling the KnS series as the perfect vns to play for Halloween.

>I fear the same will happen with Bokuten because it isn't a happy game.
That game almost killed OVERDRIVE, so there are many people hesitant to play it due to them assuming it's going to be shit. MG has also given me the impression that it's not one of their priority projects, since it's been sitting unworked on for a long time now, them having prioritized eden* and Supipara over it.
>>
>>14215676

I really can't imagine there are "many" people in the English fanbase who keep up with how a Japanese company performed as a result of a VN that hasn't even been translated yet. People mainly just judge based on how the game itself looks. So if they're interested or uninterested, it's because of Bokuten, nothing else. Besides, that only happened because Japanese people hate when a company they're loyal to betrays their expectations so they got really mad that they did something that wasn't a moege. Nothing to do with the quality of the game itself.

>They really need to start shilling the KnS series as the perfect vns to play for Halloween.

On that note, are they actually? It looks like Subahibi is never going to come out so I might start a new VN soon. and I like when it's somewhat appropriate for the season.

Ah, but I haven't read Cartagra either so maybe that first. I'm not sure if you include that as part of the KnS series or not.

Is it suppose to be surprising ? There is literally no advertising at all for KnS 2 and it's a sequel, even if you lied about it and say that it can be read as a stand-alone, people will not buy the third installment of a serie without reading the others.
This is no wonder because the western fanbase is mostly made of garbage who want to show off their moege at their friends on Steam or want to read crappy nukige made by second class eroge company unknown in Japan.

Serious story-driven visual novel are doomed.
I pre-ordered KnS2 because i'm a big fan of IG and I want to reward the work of Maria and the others people who worked on it.
And i'll not blame MG when they will do only moege, second-class nukige, crappy title only made for steam, OELVN and maybe kickstarter. Because at least they tried.

You won't get the whole experience because you won't get nostalgic over old characters but honestly, they summarize who's who in the beginning and then the storyline goes its own way. It's up to you, really.

Yeah, I think I'm definitely just going to go with Cartagra first anyway, so no problem there. But I am curious, is the KnS series at all fitting for Halloween?

Speaking of Halloween, they should start putting up KnS 2 theme on their website if they want advertise it better. That banner they have currently doesn't really do much. It's quite plain. I almost skipped it.

Wait for the snow, pal.
I did that for Cartagra and KnS and it was worth the wait. These titles have a strong atmosphere, especially Cartagra and reading them when you are fully immersed is awesome.

Characters from Cartagra make a come-back in KnS and KnS 2, as a side-characters but still they played their part in the story. There is a bad end from KnS which is linked to Cartagra too.
But the most important thing is that what happened in KnS 2 is directly linked to the events of Cartagra.

I live in a desert so I don't think snow is all that likely, but once it gets cold here I'll go for it. That tends to be enough for me to appreciate the immersion, anyway. Shame it's fucking hot here most of the time.

It's funny because i had the same conversation a few months ago, maybe it was with you anon.

I will still pray for Pianissimo and Caucasus. If I believe, they will happen.

Probably not me, unless I completely forgot it (which is also possible). But I'm sure there are others here who hate living in the desert so it could go either way. Someday I'll move to Iceland or something.

I want to know how their action titles, Tokyo Babel and Gahkthun, are going to perform.

It's a murder mystery series, so I think the tone is good for the holiday. You get to see some mutilated corpses, so I think it's quite fitting.

> Serious story-driven visual novel
> KnS
Except this is not a story-driven visual novel but a cheep rip-off with shitty porn in between. I am really glad that MG customers are not stupid enough to pay for this crap.
