I will be totally honest, I am from the UK, when I was about 12 years old I caught some late night anime on the Sci-Fi channel.
The shows were Guyver and Tenchi Muyo, it was like nothing I had ever seen before. It was cartoons but it was for adults, one was ultra violent with exploding people all over the place. The other was boobs and light sabers. It was awesome!
I didn't really know what it was at the time and when Sci-Fi stopped showing it I didn't really think about it for a few years.
The thing was I was still playing lots of computer games, I just didn't really realize they were from Japan. I was being pulled into Japanese culture without really even knowing it.
When I hit 15, I started playing Pokemon on Game Boy and saw it on TV and I realized it was all part of that cool anime stuff I had seen years before.
Also I re-discovered anime on the Sci-Fi channel, which was showing things like "Bubblegum Crisis" and "Dominion Tank Police".
With the internet being more prominent around that time I started looking into it, and found out about show like "Ah! My Goddess" and "Evangelion".
And that was it I was hooked on anime and have loved it ever since. Although I didn't really look into Japanese culture, I just liked the anime and watched it dubbed.
I am now actually in Japan. It is my first visit to your country and I am loving it!
Everything feels so clean, neat, tidy and organized. People seem to actually respect not only their own property but other peoples.
If you walk into a 2nd hand games shop all the pre-owned stuff looks brand spanking new. Not a dent or anything. In the UK stuff like that would be dented, ripped and have stickers and sticker rips all over it.
Shop openly have stock outside that you can take a good look at, and no one steals it. In the UK you could not do that, it would all be gone in seconds.

I was wondering why these cartoons I was watching had this different vibe to it. I was young so I didn't know it was Japanese (what I was watching was dubbed). Eventually I realised how different the Japanese were and how much more welcoming to me it was in comparison to the what America had to offer. I was always a softie and feminine, and appreciated/liked cute things, so once I learned what Japan and Japanese people were like, it just clicked.
Then once I stepped away from dubbed anime, I heard the language and really liked it. For whatever reason, I have a hard time listening and understanding English, especially in music. It's too slurry for me, it sounds sloppy. Japanese is much more "crisp"? I'm not sure what to call it, but it's much easier for me to hear. Vocals in music, even though I couldn't understand them, were enjoyable. Now the main appeal to me is how calm it seems like it would be there. Socialising with Americans is so dramatic. The Japanese seem like they would lack a lot of the things that I absolutely despise about about people in America. I think if I lived in Japan, I would try and make friends (I don't, now), even though I would have to deal with being seen as a "foreigner" no matter what.

When I landed in KIX I caught the train to Kyoto at about 10PM and all the city lights for the train ride amazed me, nothing like that in Australia.

Well, I lived on Okinawa for 3 years (my dad is in the military), and while it's not mainland, I did visit mainland enough to know I like the climate. In actuality, when I found out we were moving to Okinawa, I hated the idea and was angry with my dad for quite a while. Then, when we moved back to the US, I realized how ignorant I actually was. I've been living in the US for 5 years now and can't wait to leave this place. I'm planning on trying to get into the JET Program or Interac. I get called a weaboo faggot by a few friends of mine, but it's not really that. I don't watch very much anime, nor do I really care about manga. It's really a "well I lived in Okinawa and quite liked Japan when I visited, I guess if I'm going to leave the US, I'll go to Japan" sort of thing. When I was really young I was overly fascinated in cartoons. Any show that was a cartoon I enjoyed, and anything western simply could not compete with Japanese cartoons. The sense of wonder and amazement from Beyblades, Digimon, Dragonball, Medabots, Knights of the Zodiac, even fucking Yu-gi-oh and other crap that founds its way on TV where I was was completely unparalleled. When I discovered Cowboy Bebop, FLCL and other toonami crap that actually had some depth it effected me so deeply. That and Nintendo among other Japanese game producers were also a big part of my childhood.

No other nation-state on earth has a culture more alien to my own than Japan. While Greece and Rome expanded their influence over all of Western Europe, and even the Slavic peoples had significant trade and communication with China, none of them had any substantive contact with Japan until relatively recently.
Japan, and its cultural mores, are as close to an alien civilization as I'm ever going to come, and because of that its endlessly fascinating to me - especially how the stark differences emphasize the uncanny similarities even more.
Aside from that, Japan is the land where animation survived and evolved into an accepted medium for mature stories, unlike the West - and because of that, anime is much more likely to tackle speculative or science-fiction settings and premises than Western media of any sort is, short of novels.

I remember my father being kind of an argetinian Japphile, he seemingly really liked the idea of Japan becoming a superpower (that apparently died near 2000).
He would sometimes tell me stories about how they dominated the auto industry with small cars in comparison to big american ones when I was 13, despite it being 2007. That added to how I digged robots, Mario, (very) late 90's and early 2000's anime,the internet (Newgrounds and Inciclopedia) and weirdness (not the lulsorandom kind) made me intereted in the country.
It started when my mother got me hooked on video games by getting me all sorts of handhelds & consoles. My father did the same after my mother left him.
Anime sometimes aired on TV during my childhood. I knew nothing of the stuff, but I was entertained and wanted moar. I learned that some of the stuff I enjoyed came from Japan around 2000-2003.
Hentai definitely played a role. I think it was 10 years ago when I found a Chinese or Japanese imageboard (don't recall which). I lost the URL but it was a board for tentacle hentai. This pleased me greatly since I was 13, but I couldn't fap in peace because I had very little privacy. Tentacle rape is still my top fetish btw.
In 2004/2005 I went to a Cherry Blossom festival which was my first real exposure to Japanese culture.
The anime network exposed me to the medium again but I didn't have it for long.
I had dialup until 2006 when I got access to my neighbor's WiFi network. I think that's when I started to play around with downloading anime, but the connection wasn't very consistent.
A friend introduced me to 4chan around that time, so I mainly lurked /b/ and didn't leave until 2008. I fled to /m/ because of AIDS and an unhealthy Gundam obsession.
I rediscovered anime that year and finally had good internet so it wasn't long before I was watching shows consistently.
Now I started learning the language and immerse myself in movies, visual novels, light novels & manga.
Sure, I may have grown up into an introverted and narcissistic 23 year old virgin, but I'm quite satisfied with how things turned out.

Anime. Growing up I remember watching Gundam 0079 and it blew my mind. After that, there was Dragonball Z and other shows. I was still a kid then, but it planted the seed.
More recently I've gotten back into anime in a more serious way, and no longer being a kid I've been watching shows with subs. This started an interest in actually learning Japanese because I noticed I was picking up on words and phrases from hearing and reading the subtitles, so I started actually learning Japanese seriously. From there, I started looking into Japan itself, looking at things like tourism or even jobs (mostly teaching English in part because it gives me a chance to use my fluency, and also because I know that I will always be a foreigner and teaching English gives me a way of using that fact to my benefit).
Despite the years between first watching 0079 and watching Aldnoah Zero now, I've always had a love for mecha and also discovered a love for SoLin particular anything by Key, so while my interest recently has become more serious than it was as a kid, I think the seed was planted a long time ago that is now beginning to bloom. Assuming I continue studying Japanese, my hope is that I'll know enough of the language to survive a trip there next year. I think that's the next step in my interest, and I'll just have to see what happens after that experience.

It's a different culture than where I come from, which is western in origin. The reason why Japan over other places is mainly because the amount of media they churn out regularly.

Everytime I see a street in japan, it seems to be very clean. Almost everything there is clean.
I live in Los Angeles and its a shithole unless you live in the richest areas. Even then there isn't anything special about the nicer areas. People here on average are not very intelligent. We either have too many mexicans or dumb whites or asians.
The anime my parents showed me. They knew exactly what they were doing.
