Gahkthun's gone on sale for December, so I suppose supipara'll be January. Mangagamer's releases certainly have been fast and furious as of late though.

The promo site for Gahkthun is really nice.
So why does the main mangagamer website still look like shit?

Can they get someone to revamp the site now since they seem to be expanding a lot more now, and that their website is the first impression that potential customers will see.

The current site would have been fine in 2006~2008ish but now it just looks fake and sketchy.

>The pink is so undesirable to look at.
>The tags in the ovals are extremely ugly and some of them are cut off at the tops and bottoms. The words are pixellated.
>All the buttons on the page look very outdated in general.
>The image previews of the products are in a like 50x30 pixel box where you can barely make out the cover.
>The Anime section has literally nothing.
>There's no clear navigation that makes sense. All the "popular categories" are just random things on a list, that has to be expanded.
>The companies/partners are just haphazardly listed under the categories.
>Can't find a button to see entire catalog or any catalog to browse through titles.
>Hot News in a very tiny box that has to be scrolled
>The slideshow advertisements is very crude/sharp because its just standalone in the pink background with no frame or anything.

That's what I see by just glancing at the site.
This is unrelatedish but their phrase "Your onestop moe download store" doesn't really make clear what mangagamer really is.
wtf is downloading moe. Also, mangagamer doesn't even focus on moe stuff anymore. Saying that MG is just for moe stuff is misadvertising their other products.

If you wanted to sell something like ef: a fairy tale of the two or something like Gahkthun, you wouldn't design a website that was pink and looked like this. It doesn't match at all.
Even Sekai Project has a nicer website.

Yes, because HaruKuru is pretty well known.

The translation group seems to have just went public a couple days ago. The partial Mahoyo translation is an aborted attempt that they made before going public, I don't know why the think posting it is a good idea.

Interview with Kouryuu
http://gameramble.com/10-Questions-John-Pickett-MangaGamer

Probably the best part is
>we’re proud of the fact that we’re the only major publisher that still pushes to release titles fully uncensored and uncut on our platform when so many others have begun to choose the path of censorship and cutting content.
>>
>>14354408
Dude, you aren't the first person to tell them it sucks. Even their workers are saying the same thing. As I recall, their boss' excuse was that it costs too much money. I also don't know why the main site doesn't have links to the promo site on the game page. That's damn weird.

I guess that Flowers-based rivalry is still real.

Although this is sad, I hope these developers MG had to turn down don't get salty.
It's also nice to see in the interview Kouryuu making it clear that MG has no intentions of censoring the games they localize.

The more data the better. Old numbers are fine too.

>>14354281

One part curiosity, one part being able to guestimate how well certain titles are doing/do. Although for the latter accuracy's taken a hit lately due to the intensely crowded release schedule creating too much noise.

I've also been taking snapshots of the mangagamer weekly top five each week which I figured I'd start posting for those curious when I have some solid information. Right now I've only got a few months of solid mikan tracking before the bundles basically made the top 5 useless up till this month.
>>
>>14354146
The Amagami translation is dead, right?
>>
>>14355011
Rather than the top 5, sort by popularity. Demon Master Chris doing so well at the moment might be due to lingering bundle keys. Or it could be because it's nice-looking and cheap.
http://www.mangagamer.com/product_list.php?goods_type=1&page=1&keyword=&cmbSort=1
>>
>>14355018

The problem with doing by popularity is that it segregates preorders("coming soon") and actual titles.
>>
>>14355013

Doesn't it go up a few points of a % every month or two? Not quite dead.
>>
>>14355027
True, it's best use is to check how long-term sales are doing. There's still static at the moment though, since the bundle games are so high on the list.

Freelancer here, also have worked for a web dev firm before.
You can charge out the ass for the simplest web design, something with dynamic pages (news and adding new content) plus a shopping system can easily cost tens of thousands of dollars. If they want the purchase system to be remade or fit the new design better, that can run 15-20k just by itself. This is one field where it's extremely easy to overcharge people. If they were to contact a cheaper freelancer then it wouldn't cost as much, but if somebody redesigns the entire website you need to consider graphics, the design itself, then all of the background systems that need to be run. It's fairly time-consuming and ecommerce websites take the longest dev time and cost the most. From personal experience. You also have to break things down like the account system, the content system, and the purchasing system. A user account system itself can easily run for 10-15k depending on how robust it is, and when you consider security you can increase the cost even more.
>>
>>14355214
This does sound expensive. Couldn't MG just make cosmetic changes to their existing site for little to nothing? Changing its color scheme and such.
>>
>>14354326

>>

>>
>>14355265
It all depends on how they sell. There's a minimum hard copy run requirement, so if its digital sales are below it, like Cartagra, then they won't get one.
>>
>>14355244
Kid. That ain't how business works.
>>
>>14355280

You don't know anything about Kickstarter, do you? It's going to make more money per day in these last ten days than before and at least 10-20k in the last day alone. That's what always happens. I give it a very low chance of failure.
>>
>>14355608

It really depends on how much of their potential audience they haven't convinced to contribute yet or how much they can milk out of their existing backers. They have to find more than 300 people to contribute the average or more to meet the goal, or convince every one of their current backers to increase their pledge by ~$25.

It's not exactly dire, but it's not a sure thing either.
>>
>>14355608
I've actually made my calculations before posting. End rush is rarely more than 30-40% of start rush, and by extrapolating current rate + end rush we get 70-80k range. That's why I said "significant" (i.e. p>=0.3) chance, not "certain".
>>
>>14355624
Dovac will just pull some shady shit like 'pledging' $10k of his own money if that happens, to collect on the rest of it.
>>
>>14355508
That's the expected result, no? It's a sequel and sequels usually don't do as well as previous entries unless the stories are unconnected. And KnS1 didn't exactly set the charts on fire.
>>
>>14355624
I think the odds of it failing are much lower than 30%. There's also a mentality for kickstarters that we haven't really seen with VNs yet when a project is really close to the goal but not quite there yet. People start feeling an obligation to push the project past the finish line. Projects have failed after reaching 90%+ funding, but this is exceptionally rare.
>>
>>14355640
Would be funny if he does it, gets caught by KS staff (that shit is forbidden by ToS explicitly) and banned from it forever.

>>
>>14355694
It had to accumulate sales for very long time, initial rush was worse than cartagra/kns2.
>>
>>14355596
Nobody. People on here are already convinced that's true, and why waste time confirming it and run the risk of actually disproving the current consensus? No, people are just going to refrain from doing that and call anyone actually doing it and posting about it a Sekai shill who is lying about the scripts being different.

>>14355699
Lack of initial rush was entirely MG's fault for Kara no Shoujo 1. For most of the initial 24 hours, and some time after that, the game was unavailable for purchase. Those "lucky" enough to get it before it went offline got treated to a beta build with major spoilers. (Meanwhile, pirates were playing a fixed version as people who purchased the game were kept waiting.)

Yes, I'm still mad.
>>
>>14355733
I'd attribute the lack of initial rush more to the lack of voices. And it took them over two years to reach the meager goal established for releasing a voiced version.

>>
>>14356366
Bitch, it was 'translated' by 10 different Fuwanovel 'translators', all doing random parts, the main one of which was an admitted machine translator who they didn't even kick off until people pulled posts from him off the internet archive saying he couldn't read Japanese at all, and then, somehow, all 100% of his work was supposedly redone and verified correct a week later, and every single patch and sample of their work has been literally full of bizarre errors. It's the same as KoiRizo, machine translated, and then a poor attempt to cover it up by editing it over and over again.

What more evidence do you want? A video of them using Google Translate?
>>

There's also the matter of the translator literally posting that he thinks it's faster and more accurate to read machine translation than to learn kanji.

But feel free to post the scripts so we can show off your failures for something like the sixth time, Mdz.
>>
>>14356418
The mistakes were also grammatically fucked up, like "the waves have calmed" translated as "The sound of the waves is relaxing," that really shows he was not looking at the original Japanese at all.

The eroge industry has some freaklishly multitalented people.

Scaji is the CEO of two brands plus their holding company, along with being the producer of all their games, a writer, and an artist. Takaya Aya (Otoboku series, among many other things) is a writer, artist, programmer, and producer, and he does music on the side.
>>
>>14356526
It takes very little talent to be a producer or CEO, and basically all VN studios are horribly managed, so they don't even have that. It'd be like Herkz bragging about being team leader for Commie AND also editor.

That Scaji has managed, basically on his own, to keep Keromakura afloat this long, during a time when other eroge companies are folding left and right, means he must be doing something right on the business side.

Even if you ignore that, the fact remains that he has his fingers in basically every aspect of the creation of his games, which is impressive enough.

It's just a small industry with a low bar. Really depends on exactly what needs to be done. It can actually be done relatively quickly (a few weeks), but with how often people actually work at firms compared to how much they should, it'll probably balloon project into a couple of months. Usually when you contract a website more than one person will work on it so the cost has to be split amongst the workers, at least in theory. In actuality the boss gets all the cash and you'll get a nice bonus if you bring in enough revenue yourself. Another place I worked it which was normal desktop development, I was paid about $40 an hour but we charged clients $175 an hour for work. So I was making well over my paygrade, if I had 10 hours if billables a week that was basically more than my salary for that same week.

Nobody actually works 8 hours a day, though, you'll probably put about half that time at best into a specific project. So while making a database and the systems to interact with that could take a few days or weeks itself depending on size, and the actual visual design of the website is the longest part (coupled with testing it for other browsers, assuming you don't go with a generic web 2.0 look) it can take quite a while. This is, of course, taking into account how people actually work in the workforce compared to what they do on their own.

>>14355244
Like >>14355281 said, this is business. You can charge people just to look at the website then charge them for minor changes pretty arbitrarily. You can get away with a lot of shit, especially for people who are unfamiliar with web design, it's all a huge joke. I used to charge people thousands of dollars for search engine optimization, which 90% of the time was just using Google webmaster tools, since small businesses don't need much more than that.
And the clients would always come back for more. I should feel a little bad but with the way my bosses have treated me I can't say I really care.

Why is MangaGamer called MangaGamer?
They don't have any relation to manga.
Imagine if they're talking to a potential partner and they call themselves MangaGamer. The potential partner will be like, "MangaGamer? You guys work on publishing manga in the west? What makes you want to work on visual novels?"
MangaGamer will have to say that they don't work on manga or is related to manga at all and the potential partner will start questioning MangaGamer's knowledge of japanese and their company title.

I hope they actually aren't updating their site because they are going to REBRAND soon tm to a name that makes sense for their work with a complete website overhaul.

Koiken Otome was also being primarily done by a confessed machine translator who deleted his post saying he used machine translation. When it was revealed, they said that he was only allowed to translate 'unimportant' scenes. When people made fun of them for that, he was supposedly kicked off entirely, but they somehow found a half dozen people on Fuwanovel to TLC what he did and declared it now accurate.

6 months between releases is a long time. You expect people to wait 5 years for this?
>>
>>14358743
For Umineko, they'd be better off waiting for the entire thing to be TL checked and edited, so that they can release it all at once, or at fixed intervals.

That's Key's plan for Angel Beats.

And they're already years behind.

>and are waiting for more chapters come out to get them in a bundle or something
Well the first was already part of some indie bundle, so it wouldn't surprise me people are waiting for the second to be placed in one to get it on the cheap.
Not like waiting is going to hurt since it is going to take ages for it all to be released.

>re-releasing something for a third time obviously was
This is only MG's second version of Higurashi that I'm aware of, unless you're counting the French version that used to be on their site.
>>
I am waiting for the entire series to be finished first. I know that sucks for MangaGamer, but since I already have a backlog of 20 VNs, I'm in no hurry to extend it with additional ones that I won't see the end of for years.

I hope you're not basing this off of one day of sampling from Steamspy.

Forum activity (on Steam) and number of reviews are significantly lower than when the first chapter was released. I also think the sales aren't particularly high.

Its on page 9 of top sellers now. Definitely not doing good.

It's not the editor it's the translator. The supposed main translator for Clannad is the same guy that translated ImoPara for MG and was fired because of it.
>>
>>14359239
Trantez or YukkuriS? Or are they the same guy? I can't remember.
>>
>>14359243

YukkuriS is the guy who was fired from MG and is supposedly the main translator for Clannad from what he said on Kickstarter. No clue who Trantez is.

>It's not the editor it's the translator
No, its editor.
>supposed main translator for Clannad is the same guy that translated ImoPara for MG
Stop doing drugs, or at least stay away from 4chan when you have trips.
>>

The project lead is just listed as Yui, no clue if that's YukkuriS or what, but I could've sworn there was an update by him.
>>
>>14359273
I was talking about Kara Dennison, former MG "editor". There's a reason why she's not willing to list MG on her resume, she was fired for incompetence and lack of any actual work done on projects she was assigned to.
>>
>>14359253
Trantez is Batman, the guy they had help clean up the ImoPara translation. He jobbed on the Higurashi retranslation though and he was replaced with Gary.
>>
>>14359253
Clannad being translated by a guy that MG didn't think translated nukige good enough. This should be good.

Is she the one who messed up the No, Thank You TL that GoodHaro had to go back and fix?
