>want to make money from drawing porn commissions
>its completely dominated by Art School drop outs or Graphic Designers who have way more skill
How does a hobbyist like me compete with them? Say what you will about art school, but ive noticed some that go through with it wind up being alot better than self learners, and usually always end up making decent money from drawing porn after they inevitably drop out.
>>
Git gud is only way. You're giving art school too much credit. You can be just as good and better. The only reason it seems better is because art school gives you the structured environment to keep focused and in routine. If u can do that by yourself you're golden
>>
The problem with the porn community right now is, because a lot of popular artists are college art students/graduates/dropouts, the community is infested with SJ cliques.

While it might not effect your business now, if the "community" doesn't approve of you, they can bar your entry for higher up positions, as a lot of people move on from porn to professional careers and still stay in their old cliques.
Don't worry about skill in the art community. The artists might be stingy but your average porn consumer does not give half a fuck what your technical skill it. There are plenty of conventionally "bad" hobbyist artists who make it in the porn scene.

Most of these "bad" artist are also not part of the college kid groups, and don't suffer from being pretentious liberals.
>>
>>2516431
The main reason art school gives you an edge is because you are surrounded by competition.

And an environment that forces you to keep producing content.
If you want to emulate this just find some friendly rivals or competition. But don't become like half of /ic/ and focus more on hating some random fuck instead of improving your own shit first.

DOES norasuko use sai?? his work has this really unique look to it that i can't seem to recreate in ps.
>>
>>2516434
I'm not. It's a problem in every art community that is populated by art-school kids.

It will not effect your career in porn, as I'd say a majority of the porno artists are still home-made self-taught normal people, but the subject is "Art School drop outs or Graphic Designers who have way more skill"

And those people are usually insufferable.

>How does a hobbyist like me compete with them?
Quick answer, draw weird shit. You've missed the boat for the days when MS paint yiffing could net you $40 a hit over DA but you can still make easy money.

Long answer, just practice more. This place is literally filled to the ass with books on improving, read one and start actually drawing.
>>
>>2516421
Find a niche fetish that has almost not art/mostly shit art, git gud and start collecting dem NEETbux in commissions and patreon. This has been repeated to death, why don't you fags just make a "how 2 make business" sticky?

>>
>>2516476

Care to elaborate on those MS paint yiffing days?

So if I understand you corectly you're saying there was a peak popularity in nsfw furry commissions a couple of years ago(?) and then it flattened out... For some reason. Any ideas why? Was the market less saturated then, or do you just chalk it up to being the natural ebb and flow of trends and the combination of a lot of different factors?

I do NSFW commissions (mixed up with pixel art gigs and other freelance illustration) but I don't have a lot of insight into the furry market. Weird question perphaps but I find it interesting to try to understand these different trends.
>>
>>2516438

Dude, I've been using Photoshop for years and I've always struggled with inking. I finally gave in and tried CSP/Manga Studio yesterday and holy shit it's like working in god mode all of sudden. I highly recommend you give it a try. The brushes are way more responsive and organic in feel.
>>
>>2516544
>Any ideas why?
1) Market saturation; There was a time when few people would actually draw diaper inflation dogs and the market for it was huge. Now there's terabytes of art relating to every fetish and a basic cheat-mode way of reaching the bare bones standard required to produce the art.
2) The fandom has sort of eroded over the last four years, like the emo trend and the like it was a fad that has found it's life long adherents yet shed a large portion of its members.

You really do need to market yourself hard and go all out on every commission, you'll find that a lot of your business comes from repeat clients but if you have no qualms about being a glorified whore then you can still substitute your income quite nicely.
>>
I tell you again and again - art is shit tier career and you should switch to it only after you git gut/somewhat decent and you could live and save money from it.

Going freelance without having your name in some way established will just condemn you to life in poverty and scrapping the bottom of the barrel to find some spare change.

Spare yourself humiliation, get a real job, git gut in atelier and after some year(s) you can think about switching to part-time or employing yourself as junior artist/graphic designer somewhere.

Doing porn commissions is for people with nigger mentality, the same type of people that regularly bet $100 on Powerball lottery.

And why is it always porn commissions anyway? Why can't you git gut and try illustrating books for children for that matter? There's a lot less competition than here (although they will expect some quality/fun colors).
>>
>>2516582
>Why can't you git gut and try illustrating books for children for that matter?

LOL if you think anyone ever will hire you to do this. if you want to illustrate childrens books you better be ready to write them yourself. the stylized illustration market is even more saturated than the conceptart market and mango market combined.
>>
>>2516584

>more saturated than concept art

I don't think so, Tim.
>>
>>2516582

Dude, children's books is one of the hardest if not THE hardest market to get into. You're completely clueless.
>>
>>2516582

>>
>>2516608
Actually, as another freelancer, that was one of the more informed posts on this board.

Do not go into freelance without already being established. Barring lottery luck, which the other anon touches on, it will end badly for you. It takes time to network and build up a client base. Do not go in with nothing. Either a year's worth of savings, or an existing client base.

Op isn't going full time freelance, he's going to do pick up porn commissions for dosh.

Tumblr or Furaffinity depending on what audience you're going for and what your art looks like. Do you have examples of the style you'll be using for porn?

start by listing what degenerate fetishes you can draw
>>
>>2516521
Its obvious, but I think what OP means is, if a hobbyist who wants to cash in on the drawn porn scene he can't compete with them solely for that reason. They have more knowledge, and put in way more hours toward their craft. Unless you are willing to dedicate most of your time to drawing so that you can be able stand on your own and build a reliable fanbase, you aren't going to make much money.

I find it a very welcome change. Nowadays there are actually instances of western drawn porn I can masturbate to; it seemed absolutely unthinkable just several years ago.

To answer your question - first practice a whole damn lot to get to a decent level, then it's much more about getting an audience rather than honing your skills to some kind of master level. To put it simple, first you get OK at drawing, then you get good at attention whoring.

This, anon, Ive been struggling with PS for so long with its ink brushes. I downloaded lots and lots of different brushes, my inking always looks bad or not the type I want.
When I post this issues in /ic/ they always say its my fault, and default PS brushes work just fine.

So, is this real? Do I need another software? SAI will fix this? Manga studio? More about your post please
>>
>>2520880

photoshop can do everything. if you struggle with it it's a combination of the following:

- you suck
- you don't know how to configure the brush settings
- you don't use lazy nezumi plugin to stabilize

It really looks bad with the pencil tool.

Photoshop is a piece of outdated junk for inking. It's straight up horrible, really. I am a long time Photoshop user but I switched in a heartbeat the first time I tried Clip Studio Paint. The vector brushes are amazing and Lazy Nezumi is a ugly joke compared to the built in smoothing of CSP. A fucking JOKE. Without learning the software (a lot of the UI and shortcuts are identical) I inked a piece in half the time it would have taken me in Photoshop. It feels like inking on godmode. Anon, stop being a Photoshop pleb and join the CSP masterrace.

on inkin is when AA should be off, thats how a lot of digital inking gets done. i was wondering the same thing for a long time then someone told me to cut off anti-aliasing and thats what makes it look like that. it makes it look crisper .
>>
>>2521169
Ok anon you convinced me, I keep pushing and pushing PS and Im not getting nice results.
I stick to it because you know, its always nice to put in your portfolio, for professional works and its a plus learning new things every day.

So csp over sai? Sorry for my ignorance, but is Smith Micro Manga Studio the same one?
Im going to give it a try tonight
>>
>>2521170
have u tried it on a larger resolution?
>>
>>2521177
i use manga studio for inking , the stabilizers are really nice and it has perspective rullers and such
>>
>>2521177

It's not like you can't use both, I haven't tried painting in CSP yet, I think I'll probably still use photoshop for more painterly stuff. Clip Studio Paint is the japanese name as I understand it, they recently decided to stop calling it Manga Studio in the west. Just try it. Quick tip to get started - when inking with vector lines, you can erase overlapping lines with one click (even on multiple layers) if you use the vector eraser. This feature alone saves soo much time it's not even funny. Plus you can change thickness and direction of a stroke afterwards since it's vector.

I usually work on a 2000x2000p 300dpi canvas, but thats something I normally have trouble, should I draw on 50% zoom? or 100%? It surely looks better on 50% or so, but then at full size it looks so bad.
>>
>>2521182

start at 25 then move to 50 then 100 getting increasing detail each time

Go to furaffinity, people will literally throw money at you to draw there gross fetish shit.
I have friend who is a good artist but nothing spectacular and his anatomy is off but he made like over $100 over a 2 day period.
>>
>>2521180
any special configuration for inking strokes when using manga studio?
can I start with the default config?
>>
>>2521220
i use the g-pen for inkin, and i set the stabilizer to what feels comfortable at the time, if stabilizer isnt visible you can go into the settings and make it so it is by clickin the check. the anti-aliasing should be around that area to if you wanna use it.

Fairly established porn artist here. Been at it for several years. We offer the same insights and they should probably be on a sticky or some kind of document/wiki site, but here it goes:

How do you compete? That can be easy or hard depending on how passionate you are and how effectively you communicate erotic concepts.

Anyone who's been drawing for a few years knows how to draw/render anatomy decently, but that alone isn't interesting or hot enough to stand out. Now, can you fetishstically render anatomy? Can you make big, soft tits? Really cushy asses that are lit in a way that makes you want to shove your face in them? Can you not only draw feet, but make them shapely and hit all the notes that foot fetishists look for?

Art is a hard thing to fake until you make it. You need to be a bit perverted and be able to communicate your kink through what you're drawing. That is the absolute, most crucial thing you can do. Your technical ability besides that isn't as important. So if you have a low/vanilla sex drive, you're going to have an extremely rough time making convincing porn.

Artists like Incase make bank and have tons of fans because there's a combination of well-represented eroticism and also a great technical understanding. Artists like Shadman can scrape a living because even though his work is technically very stiff and simplistic, he does manage to imbue a sense of raw perversion in his work. He also panders to the most mainstream sensibilities on the planet (ie nerds).

You can compete, but you need to stop looking at it from an academic ability standpoint. You're making porn first. The art is second. Make good porn.

Thank you for the insight. I have some questions though.
I was considering making a tumblr actively posting nsfw porn to make a following and then a year down the road I'd make a patreon. How's that sound?
How does drawing porn influence the psyche in the long run? Isn’t drawing porn relatively in the same genre as watching porn? Especially when you can make things extremely sexy and get super turned on by what you draw? Ex porn addict here..
I am on a pretty high technical lvl and have lost all motivation to draw/paint "meaningfull art" anymore so figure I might as well earn some cash u know.
Got the fetish bit and the skills in check. Could see myself draw in the same style as the pit.
I would not like to have it trace back to me though. Is it possible to remain completely anonomys throughout my porndrawing "carrier"? If so; who is atm?

>I was considering making a tumblr actively posting nsfw porn to make a following and then a year down the road I'd make a patreon. How's that sound?

Good idea. You want some kind of established following before you do a Patreon. It wouldn't really hurt to start off early, but I think a year is a good window of time to get some exposure and create a little bit of demand. Understand though that there are great artists who make very little through Patreon, so above all, have good, solid, reliable output. Look at successful Patreons and model your rewards off of theirs.

>How does drawing porn influence the psyche in the long run? Isn’t drawing porn relatively in the same genre as watching porn? Especially when you can make things extremely sexy and get super turned on by what you draw? Ex porn addict here..

These days I'm not fapping much. 27 now, been drawing porn for about 10 years (though wasn't really working at it in a job capacity until about 5-6 years ago.) I'd say starting out, try to keep focused, and channel your horniness into drawing, not fapping. Keep your hand off your dick. Conversely, if you aren't feeling particular inspired, touch your dick a bit. Get your energy going. It's all about balance though. Not too horny that you can't work, but not too detached that you're just going through the motions.

>I would not like to have it trace back to me though. Is it possible to remain completely anonomys throughout my porndrawing "carrier"? If so; who is atm?

I know of a couple of artists who quit porn and moved on to other things. I'm not going to out them though. You move on if and when you want to and don't fuck with someone else's transition. Life changes, people change, perceptions change, it's all inevitable. You can move on, but you'll have to augment your style a bit if you want to fly under the radar. That said, there's a few artists who are pretty openly drawing porn who still get mainstream work.

Just fyi, manga studio is literally just CSP.

I use CSP-EX because there was a good sale for the upgrade from Pro. SAI is very good if not slightly even better for just inking, but CSP is vastly superior to SAI in everything else. The latest patch even added animation tools (EX has unlimited time while Pro has only 24 frames but yeah).
