FAQ:
Something's broken, what do I do?

>The site is currently in the alpha phase of development and is being built around us as we compete so sometimes things go wrong. If you ever need any help send me a tweet @LavaFlake or shoot me an email [email protected].

What do we draw?

>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.

What's a low effort warning?

>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.

>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.

What happens if I'm eliminated?

>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.

How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?

>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.

Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?

>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

Topic of the Day voting thing is acting kinda funky, the vote bar disappears when I vote for "phobia"
>>
The topics are fixed. The cooldowns only apply from when the system was put in place so it's possible that recent topics will still pop up occasionally but that'll happen less and less. It was also broken because it generated a topic that was removed and... yeah, that broke stuff.

tldr: it's working now and we may still the occasional repeated topic but that'll go away and within a month they should all be relatively fresh.

>>2459013
Oh turns out that case was deleted back when I did the first loli purge. Back then I would just delete the entry entirely but now with the new system it shows it as removed. I'll set it not to put removed entries into the tribunal

The LAS threads are for more than shitposting or complaining to Lava that's something's broken. If people would like crit on things or advice on how to do something then they're completely allowed to post here, in fact that's kind of the point since we don't have crits or comments on the site itself.

If someone drops a leading question like "out of the flawless week 7ers, who do you think is the best at drawing dragon dicks" or something to try get their name mentioned though then by all means autistically shout at them to leave.

>>2459061
General rule of thumb, if your reference is above/below your image, triple check your vertical measurements, if it's at the side, triple check the horizontals. Looks mostly ok though, maybe move on to learning how to blend things next, you don't need to blend everything but some soft or lost edges here and there can make a piece much better.

Can't tell if you're improving unless you post a link to your blog or username on LAS so we can see your previous work.

>we have established from thread 1 on that this is not a critique thread

I've been here since Day -1, in every thread, and no such thing was decided. In this thread >>2349409 there was a lot of debate over having comments/critique on the site itself, and in this post >>2349624 Lava made a poll on the site to see what the people wanted. If those links don't work, that thread is archived here: https://boards.fireden.net/ic/thread/2349409/

The poll decided for no comments or crits on the LAS site itself, and that people can ask for critique or comments in these LAS threads, which is what they're for, or if they feel shy or don't want to get shitposted they can do it in the general draw threads.

There is no rules that these threads are not for critique, it's the opposite.

You said:
>we have established from thread 1 on that this is not a critique thread

And were proven wrong, with sources, here: >>2459164

Now you're changing your argument to that you personally can't remember crits and helpful advice in these threads, but it doesn't seem like you've been here very long. Stella, jerrybreem and a number of others, especially beginners, have posted asking if they're making any progress and what they should focus on moving forward. Other people have asked for targeted help, like people asking poon how he gets such smooth flowing lines, or asking Anon313 or FmMood how much they use reference vs imagination, or asking JMGN how much time he spends on pieces and what his workflow is over the week.

I could go back through the thread archives again and show you these posts, but since you'll just change your argument again, there's not much point. The FACT, is that you are categorically wrong. These threads are for the critique and help of users of LAS. I don't understand why you're angry, is it because other people are asking for crits and getting attention when you're not, or the fact that this community is nicer than the general draw and alternative threads? Either way, you shouldn't be angry anon. LAS isn't hurting anyone, if you want to go argue then you know when the general threads are, and we'll be off page 1 in no time.
>>
how do you join this
>>
>>2459172
>fuck
We don't use that word on this board
>>2459170
No one said that these threads are always used for critique, they said that critique is allowed. For example, people always post that Peter Han texture exercise and plenty of people respond. Quit speeding out.
>>
>>2459170
It's not like there's never any critique. The issue is that few people ask for critique and even fewer give critique unprompted.

Remember Lasses, do your part by offering constructive criticism to those who need it, take advantage of the thread by requesting help, and make this thread more about drawing than shitposting in general.

'Sup guys. How are you all tonight? I've been kind of feeling disillusioned tonight about art and life in general. I'm studying computer science but I really don't know if it's for me. Likewise for art, as I haven't really seen any improvement after 40~ days of doing this. I've started fantasizing about a career as an animator or comic book artist, but I feel like a nineteen-year-old just starting out drawing on a whim has a slim chance of getting good enough. Anyone have similar feelings? P.S. I'm drunk, so I apologize for any lack of clarity. Sorry for blog.
>>
>>2459325
>19
Shit man, I wish I came to the conclusion that CS wasn't for me and decided to pursue Art at 19.
I'm in my early 20s now.
Way I saw it, CS had a decent and stable career path but if I were to be successful at it I would need to sink in tons of hours into studying code and thats just in uni. CS languages and technology are updated every single year and if you're going into it you should love it because prepare to keep learning even when you're off work.
So I asked myself, would I rather put in those hours learning CS or learning to do what I love?

Listen I'm still beginner tier and I may be a future starving artist, so think twice before taking advice from me, but you're still young and you still have time. Think about what kind of future you want and if you really, truly love art. How do you find out? Continue to draw. Draw every single day, not for LAS but for yourself. If, after a year, of studying and putting those studies to good use, you still feel that burning passion and desire for art then it may be what you've gotta do with your life. If not, keep it up as a hobby and look elsewhere for career choices.
If you're dedicated enough you can overcome that fear of failure and make it.
I may have rambled there but its late, I'm bloody tired and Im sleep deprived as is.
>>
>>2459325
>I feel like a nineteen-year-old just starting out drawing on a whim has a slim chance of getting good enough
you are just looking for an excuse to fail and not feel bad that you did.
>>
>>2459325
Shit, you sound just like my husband when he was your age. He dropped out of art school after a year and went straight into comp sci, only to find out he hated that too. He ended up doing a two-year machining program and he loves it. Has a good paying job too.

From my experience helping him through that, I'd say take a break to find out your passions on the most basic level. Do you like solving equations? Helping people? Building things? If you have the cash, take a few varied CC classes. If not, get a job or volunteer in a field you think you might grow to like. 19 really is young to start discovering those things. And you can always do art on the side. There are people in this thread with day jobs who still manage to draw every day. So don't feel like you're betraying yourself by not doing art.

Also, don't be a degenerate. Stop drinking until you're of age.

Definitely consider dropping out of CS. I got lucky and my biggest passion happens to be a growing scientific field, but that's not the reason I chose my career path. I absolutely know I would not be happy and I would deeply regret my choices if I was in a field I didn't love because it pays well. Think of it this way. You can waste a very large portion of your time on something unhappy so you have the money to buy luxuries that make you happy in the free time you have. Alternatively, you can be happy WHILE you work and you might have to cut corners, but there are many things you can do to make yourself happy outside of work without spending a lot of money. And you can be satisfied with your work and enjoy it every day and be excited by new challenges within it, rather than miserably suffering through like a stereotypical wageslave. Try exploring some other things because it is difficult to make it as an artist, but seriously, if you find that there's nothing you enjoy near as much as drawing, just go for it. Regretting your life when you're on your deathbed is a very sad prospect.

You can get good, just look at Lava. He's what, late twenties if I remember correctly? Look at the start of his blog, he was total shit. He's been drawing for less than a year and he's already getting pretty good, because he knows how to study. Obviously you don't have all day every day to draw, but I recommend taking a look at his study plan:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php/320461-Zero-to-Hero?p=3969825#post3969825
You're still young, you can definitely get good.

Huh, I didn't expect anyone to care. I appreciate it, but odds are, nothing will come of it.

The short: I want to start a fantasy animated show geared towards an adult demographic. The first step would be a webcomic of it, with some animated segments.

The long: I think as far as western adult animation hord, there's nothing outside of edgy/risque humor with "functional enough" animation. I love things like Futurama, but these shows are 100% carried by their writing alone. Nothing pushes the medium in interesting ways (exception: Superjail!), and comedy is always the priority.
Using this world that I'm building over several messy worddoc pages, I want to prove that western animation doesn't just have to be funny jokes directed at varying ages groups paired with mediocre artistic execution. I want to tell meaningful stories that people can relate to, using a medium with the capacity to inspire awe, curiosity and empathy. A masterwork animation series with timeless permanence.
The idea itself is sort of a slice-of-life/adventure set in a fantasy world. There's a small twist and I think that's what makes it unique, but then again, I don't know if I'm a good writer I am so it could just be bosh. I've had nightmares where I've started this project and the Bad Webcomics Wiki lists under Author Responses my solemn acknowledgement of their criticisms: "yeah, yeah, you're definitely right on all counts. i'm sorry to stain the web with my garbage."

I know these are silly romanticized dreams... I am well aware how stupid this is. I've futzed about through 2 years of high school and 3 years of college, dipping into art for an hour before giving up for a month. Thanks to LAS, I've practiced consistently for the first time ever, and I want to take flight this last summer. I'm scared, because once I start working full-time, I cannot practice enough to catch up. I don't want this dream to die, but I don't know if I have the bravery and will to do it.

I definitely empathize with this idea. You're right that it's unrealistic, but that doesn't mean impossible. Do you have any sort of action plan? Obviously it would be near impossible to do by yourself, so are you planning on hiring animators/writers/composers/etc and assembling a team once you're earning enough money? It seems very difficult to make such a large-scale project, especially if you're aiming for greatness, if you're not even working in art.

> do you have any sort of action plan
First steps are first, so before I can even think about arranging any massive scheme, I need to polish my fundamentals to a razor sharp point. I think one thing that lit a fire under my ass is observing Murata working on One Punch Man. Maybe not to the extent of his obscene abilities, but constructive mastery is essential. For animation specifically, anatomical knowledge, bio-mechanics, cinematography and understanding how to distort all these elements in glorious motion with ease is the kind of understanding I want to one day have. This alone is a daunting task, and the best work I've done so far would only get "needs more Loomis" as a critique on this board, so I've got a long journey ahead of me.

> near impossible to do by yourself
Yeah, that's something I have to confront. I think when I start doing the webcomic, it'll initially be 100% independent. I want to see what kind of momentum this idea can pick up as far as critical response and fanbase is concerned. If it turns out I did indeed have an excellent idea and it picks up either fanbase momentum or critical acclaim, I can think about the next step. Homestuck (ugh), for instance, is an example of how a popular idea can cause talent to gravitate towards and supplement its development.
While I haven't read/watched it, RWBY happened, so I could look into how that got started and take similar steps in making it a web series.
The other option is after the webcomic "proof of concept" stage, is to pitch the idea to a television network, but I don't know many details about how that works.

but all that is useless speculation if i haven't gotted gud i spend enough time daydreaming as it is

He explains some really quick and simple methods to get shit done really fast and very accurately. I think it's hands down the best perspective book available.

Reddit is superior to 4Chan

It only took them like what 2 years to take off while 4chan's been at this game for 12 years?

>mfw not been to v and a in over a year and fa, lit and ck in almost half a year
feels great not browsing random threads for hours and then realising that I've been doing nothing of value the entire time anymore

4chan is pretty well-known and populated.

Also, how do userbase numbers = quality?

Please delete this before you turn the thread into a shitstorm

the quality of a community and it's number of users are inversely proportional. You should know this by now.
Also 4chan is among the 1000 most visited websites daily, so what's your point?

There will always be demand for STEM jobs. It's really that simple.

Also, schools are more willing to financially support STEM students, especially in grad school. If you're poor, go into research. Any grad program worth its salt will either cover or offer you work to cover your costs while working on a Doctorate. You can even skip Masters in some fields.

My solution: open Spotify, choose an album I really want to listen to and listen to the whole thing while painting, no stops, never fails.
>>
>>2460009
either grab an audiobook, or just music like >>2460010 and draw like there's nothing else on your mind.
Have important exam tomorrow? Fuck it, just draw.
Really need to finish this piece of work for your boss? Call him and tell him he's a cunt. Then draw.

I usually listen to Watts Atelier Friday workshop videos, they are like 3 hours long. Having Jeff talk about art stuff in the background is kinda encouraging.

I gotta get back into it but I don't have the energy. I have to study for college so much, add drawing and I end up just laying in bed afraid to get up because I have so much to do. Give me strength guys. I want to draw every day again.
