This. I don't really draw anime at all but I'm not delusional enough to think it's easy. There's enough god-awful anime out there to testify that not any asshole can pick up a pencil and draw it.
Every time I see a retard wail that "wahh its just symbol drawing you just need to learn the right symbols!" I wish he's put his money where his fucking mouth is and slap down some of those easy symbols into something that doesn't look like trash. He probably can't, even if he does good realistic paintings or whatever. Probably because he has zero grasp of the decisionmaking process of stylization.

The difficult part are drawing ellipses since they're more prominent on a moe face, they're indeed symbols but you add elements of perspective and form to convey something that could exist in space but without adding too much form and detail to make it uncanny and jarring this is the tricky part.

I'll tell you why japanese art, specially in videogames went to shit.

Back in the days of the ps1/ps2 era japanese devs were the masters of acclaimed games, specially because due to the low polycount their non-photorealistic style was perfect for low poly stuff. This also happened as the same time of the fucking huge manga/anime explosion of the mid-90's so anything japanese was fucking god-tier for weaboos/teens everywhere

Yet time passed by and the whole japanese gaming industry stagnated while the ocident was getting better and better at producing games as the tech to make photorealistic stuff improved. The japs just kept spewing final fantasy after final fantasy crap, but there wasn't really an evolution. By the time the PS3 had come out, the japanese games had lost their appeal because, people whi grew up with anime eventually grew past that aesthetic and the general market just moved towards a more action/hollywood style of game than your traditional FF turn based game.

It's not that japanese game art is bad nowadays, you're just looking at the old stuff with rose-tinted glasses/ nostalgia. Japan lost its monopoly on vydia games and now they produce mainly stuff for themselves with tthe fucking waifu-loving autist otaku in mind, baring a few exception (like MGS)

I didn't post any pictures in this thread, I'm merely expressing what I've been witnessing over the last decades. Used to think that japanese were top tier in the 2000, but now they only produce mediocre shit that's been rehashed since the mid 90's. Everywhere it's just fucking bishonens with bright spiky hair that seem to have left a fucking trendy loligoth lolita store in Shinjuku (looking at you Nomura). I loved that aesthetic back in 2005, grew fucking tired of it.

Art direction in Dark Souls is ok, but the game itself is generic shit. It's a typical third person hack n slash game, but with lower health and some minor RPG elements.
How the fuck it reached the status it has is beyond me. Then again, I stopped playing console games 23 years ago.

I never, ever saw anyone pull out decently the realistic animu look, this look like Sakimichan: the game. It just looks plain weird. In KOF's case, the worst offending part isn't even the anatomy, it's their fucking wardrobe that just screams try hard and brings me back to those awful designs that Falcoon did back in the days for Maximum impact. I fucking wish Shinkiro had stayed in as a character designer, he had a much better sense of subdued and realsitic design.

They are still heads drawn in perspective, just with simplified and stylized features. The difficultly of drawing realistic heads doesn't lie in rendering or memorizing anatomy and detail, but in constructing the basis of the head in perspective.

You see that with beginners on /ic/ all the time when they try to do Loomis head constructions. I have never seen someone draw a perfect construction and then fuck up the detail and anatomy, it's always the initial construction that gives beginners and even intermediate artists the most trouble.

In many ways, drawing the simple statement can be even more difficult to pull off, because there is nothing to hide behind. No asymmetry and imperfections, no chiseled chins or pronounced anatomical features, no chaos in ugliness or old age etc. You fuck up the proportions and the symmetry even a little and the face looks off and aesthetically unappealing.

I find some of todays manga looks really rushed and unfinished in spots. alot of the line work in current manga looks really sketchy to me. I like the look of older mangas.
