So for the second time I decided to take a break from the Stylus and Tablet and drew exclusively Traditional for two days. I'm having problems picking the right colors/shading in such a way that reflects a ominous and unsettling atmosphere.
At first I thought I was getting the hang of it, but then I realized my color choices were getting more and more boring as I went on.
The two characters are in a space setting and I feel like my coloring and color choices don't reflect that, does anyone have any suggestions?
>>2600447
You're not going to make the colour of skin unsettling unless you make it coal black with red eyes or some cartoon shit. You need to focus on shadows, specifically hard shadows; way darker than you're currently doing and make sure it's covering part or all of the face.
Although you couldn't make a Deathclaw look unsettling in that pose.

You've added some shadows but no highlights. Look at the way the light shines on her nose, cheeks and lower lip. There's a lot more contrast between light and shadow than you've shown. H
Her right lower eye lid is too horizontal, keep it at the same angle as the left eye.

>>2600529
The nipples are ok, but the breast shape isn't. You can look up some tutorials but drawing breasts correctly will come along as you improve your sense of weight and form. Make them round and heavy and don't forget that the ribcage they're sitting on is round as well.
>>2600338
It's wayyy too early for you to benefit from figure drawing. Work on your line quality exercises, learn to draw simple shapes in perspective, then move on to drawing human skeleton - with correct proportions. Revise the basics, don't build a house on sand.
>>2600362
Ah yes, you probably think that drawing a lot is enough. You have to put more thought into this, when practicing a circle, pay attention to using your whole arm, use constant pressure and don't go over the same line twice. The same goes for the line strokes, put more effort into every attempt, do it slowly, try different directions.
>>2600554
Thanks anon.
I hate potato heads.
>>2600551
Start off with Hampton then go to anatomy for sculptors. Keys is the most boring book and everything about "seeing" goes to shit when you start constructing forms as u draw from imagination.
>>2600338
I'm pretty bad :((
I feel like my lines are very anxious/ skittish
Any advice on how to make more confident lines? I feel like for the first 20min of all my drawings I make very small lines and basically integrate them into the shape I want. Is this right practice?
>>2600697
peter han
>>2600697
No, that's called feathering and it's a bad habit.
You have to think about each line and what you're doing with it, and try to make it in one smooth stroke.
Like >>2600700 said in not so many words, Peter Han has a bunch of YT videos with exercises you can do to practice your line control, but in my experience the more important thing than fine motor skills is that you focus, plan, and treat each line like it's important. When you're in doubt and you're not sure where to put your next line, lift your pencil off the paper and think instead of making random lines and seeing if one works.
Think, draw, think again.
PS, this isn't something anyone masters instantly just because someone's told them what to do, so don't be dissuaded if you have a hard time.
Hi, I was wondering if some of you would be willing to help out a beginner.
This is something I have been working on.
But it does not feel right and I don't know what it is.
Could you give some critique?
Reposting my post from the last thread as I didn't realize it reached bump limit.
I started drawing again after a long long hiatus, I'm drawing every day for around 2 to 3 hours, I'm drawing gestures, hands, feet, limbs, but with very little detail as I want to achieve recognizable drawing with as few lines as possible, then details. I also want to capture the "flow" of each scenario I'm drawing, instead of details themselves. Now I've realised I would probably fail horribly if I were to draw any detail on anything.
Is this acceptable way for imporvement? As time goes on I want to crank the practice time to about 6 hours a day, I'm not reading any drawing books at the moment though and trying to learn by myself, just remembering what I learned from Loomis, Vilppu etc. some time back.
Is this an acceptable way to learn? Thanks for any feedback.
No pic related as I've dropped digital drawing for now and drawing physically, so I learn to move my whole arm on a bigger canvas etc.
>>2600719
Thank you for this advice. I will work on that.
But I would really appreciate if you could also give some feedback about the posture.
>>2600723
Well, the head looks a bit large and the right arm a bit long
I'm looking at the the perspective section of the first loomis book and my head is exploding. Whats with the 90 lines connecting to the vanishing point? We worked with VP in engineering and it was nowhere near the level of this shit, I will never work this shit out in my head.
>>2600560
How am i looking now?
I should use ref but.... i'm just trying to do it with minimum lines as possible
>>2600799
Well, the shoulder, forearm, thighs.. They look pretty off to me. Like, the shoulder is too low, the forearm too short, and the thigh too thick.
>>2600833
Thank you for pointing it out.
>>2600697

>>2600799

>>2600692
I like it. You're right about your lines, but luckily that's something you can develop in time as you gain confidence. Try getting a cotton earbud and smudging those shadows, effectively getting rid of some of that feathering in favour for some smooth shadows
>>2600758
Better. Do other exercises such as drawing square grids and try drawing larger - that's why using your shoulder is so important. Keep a small sketchbook wherever you go and practice frequently.
>>2600881
To answer your question, draw gastrocnemius muscle tucking under the hamstring muscles to show a natural depression under the knee.
...it's a bit too early for you to worry about anatomy and figure drawing, reading the sticky is not a meme, it's a necessity, friend.
>>2600718
To fix this one drawing, try constructing the pose using simple cylinders and blocks. Then go into details with a felt tip pen or a marker.
A more general long-term advice would be to study perspective and anatomy beforehand. Cheers.

>>2600557
The eye pocket shadows need more warmth to them, over all you made his face and lips darker than the original.
Watch out for his tear ducts, you over looked it. Use the pink you used on the lips to unify the eyes with the mouth.
Also, the ears and back skull need more construction. Piece needs to be cleaner.
>>2600447
When I first saw this I thought she had two sets of breasts.
Its still too early to pick up what you're trying to accomplish with this piece, but if you're aiming for ominous, stay in the shadows. Use a darker pallet.
Does this look good? Someone help me with anatomy and shadows.
When people say studying for 3 hours a day, what exactly do they mean? Opening up an anatomy book, doing some minor sketches, etc? Or is there something more to it?
>>2600965
I would also like to know the answer to this question.
I keep hearing people say that I should do life drawing but I don't have any models or classes I can go to. I've been spending about an hour a day just drawing my hands from a bunch of different angles, is this a good use of my time or am I wasting it? Am I getting anything out of this besides maybe drawing better hands from imagination?
>>2600965
>>2600967
I do a couple hours a day and I think most of it is just grinding. For example, I was studying anatomy from hampton yesterday so I copied his drawing of the back a bunch of times until I had a basic idea of where things went, then I tried to construct my own backs in various positions from imagination. I only spent an hour on this but you could easily spend more time doing this. idk if people do it differently but that's how I do it.
>>2600758
Go read through the first lesson of drawing a box. It'll tell you better ways to practice that.

>>2600994
I'm unfamiliar with this head construction. If you were going for Loomis head, you should've sliced the side plane off the cranial ball.
The main problem is how flat the face is, either do the Loomis head properly or look up Reilly's abstraction (recommended - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RmHOvmPJjE ). You can learn and combine both, but you can't learn this on your own.
>>2600994

>>2601148
Why is it that everyone who uses the meme method have the same weird faces? It's like the guidelines are always set in stone 100% and straying even in the least would mean a mistake
>>2601152
The idea is you get familiar with this basic guideline and tailor the features accordingly to your model/reference/etc. It doesn't result in sameface.
>>2601113
Cool! I like how you gave the shadows a go, keep drawing friend!
>>2601152
>guidelines set in stone
You mean like how almost every human being has the exact same bones and muscles?
>>2601148
Lookin' good. Keep trying different angles while keeping the proportions correct, then take photos of elderly/babies/young/ugly people (homeless photo refs are great), that will improve your portraits drastically.
>>2601146
You're well on your way to git gud, keep it up and post occasionally, friend.
>>2601019
Likewise.
>>2601152
What ends up happening is that the people who follow the teachings don't know or understand how to bend or change the structure that's being taught, especially as they're attempting to learn.
They get the feeling that if it strays away from the shown method, it's wrong. So what ends up happening is you'll get the same face every drawing.
To get rid of this problem, the person should use whichever method they would like to learn from, then apply those structure shapes onto as many models or images as possible to get a better visual library or understanding of how the different parts of the face can change. This is something that would just be resolved over time.
First time drawing from construction form, should I keep practicing or give up? fuuck my motivation
>>2601173

>>2601152
>>2601171
I'm the face poster
Do all the faces I posted look the same to you? Certain ones in particular? I attempted to draw a variety of people from reference and also without reference. I think it is obvious that various heads in the image look different, but that might just be my bias as a beginner.
>>2600979
pls halp
>>2601183
With what exactly?
Drawing your hands is good. You could also use a mirror and draw yourself. A fair amount of community colleges in cities of a decent size offer figure drawing classes (at least in my experience).
If you can't get access to figure drawing classes with live models then your only other option is find models yourself, pose yourself or friends, or use photos and try to go from there.
>>2601181
Just a couple look different, but the rest look the same to me. It's most likely because you have the building structure lines in all the purple/red heads.
>>2601171
You just listed two possible methods. Frank Reilly is said to be "one of the best art teachers of all time", his abstraction methods actually help you get rid of the sameface habit.
>>2601173
Not bad, but start simple. You should be able to draw the head very confidently in perspective and with correct planar shading before laying in the detailed features. (pic related)
>>2601183
Arrange things laying around your room into a still life. A good photo ref is a decent substitute as well. Draw your family members/random people when they're asleep.

>>2600280
What do you think about my work?
>>2601262
You drew it pretty well, but I don't know what you expect to learn from this study. There's no muscle definition, no planes, no texture, half is covered with cloth...
You can't draw a picture appealing enough for people to fap to until you'll have learned those things.
>Pic is a bit similar, post some more drawings if you want advice/critique.
thanks for advice, here is some more.
...
I think i need to work on saturation, contrast, and softened shadows, but i don't want make it you know"little bit like a photo" style. More like paintings.
Can you give me some more avice?
>>2601295
You seem pretty decent at drawing in terms of form and perspective, but
>I suspect you learned anatomy only in terms of surface forms (left leg here is pretty bad)
>You keep drawing hair in individual strands instead of masses
>stripping off all the rendering would likely reveal quite many mistakes
For learning purpose, I'd get a sketchbook and practice with a fineliner or a pencil only, draw a few entire figures in various poses and analyze all mistakes afterwards. You'll probably find that you need to revise construction and anatomy - do so. Lastly, don't avoid drawing hands and faces (or anything you're not very confident at).

Matt?
Do I have the right idea for looking "through" a sphere? Just wanted make sure it was right with perfect ellipses in photoshop before I commit to it in drawing.
>>2601908
You need to stop focusing on stuff like this.
You autistically mapped out a 3d sphere using ellipse tools. Are you trying to become a professional death star designer? Just go draw some fucking spheres you sperg, worry about the measurements when youre good enough to need them
>>2601909
I don't care about exact measurements, I just want to know if the general idea is correct. My goal is not to be able to draw a mathematically perfect sphere, just to be able to look "through" objects and visualise their wire frames.
>>2600718
the head proportion is off a bit. It needs to be a bit smaller in overall size. the right leg is also a bit to large, but a bent leg can be quite a challenge sometimes. You seem to have focused on the outline of the figure too much. when you do that a lot of proportion problems start to pop up. REMEMBER, the from is more than jsut the outline it is the whole subject: depth, shadows, variations of lines, ect.
For future drawings try sighting methods and start with basic expressive lines and then continue to shape the figure, its all about layering my brotha.
OP here.
Anyone wanna contribute some good questions (and answers) that I can add in the OP or a post after the OP before a ref dump? Maybe 5 or so of the most common questions not answered by the sticky? I remember few other generals used to have them and since I'm the only beg thread op it can be consistent. Or is it a dumb idea. Throw questions at me.
>>2601769
>can't draw a box

Skipping over the basics won't speed up your improvement process, senpai. Read the sticky.
>>2601818
>juggles the basic construction and perspective
>worries about advanced anatomy
Each stage of your drawing is less important than the one before, leading all the way back to construction (the flat feel) and gesture (the stiffness). Watch Proko's stuff on these topics.
>>2601946
If you could somehow make people realize that figural drawing and anatomy is worthless if you can't draw a box or a line without feathering, that would save a lot of time.
>>2601818
loosen up
>>2601113
Your proportions and spacial forms are way off, and the tone doesn't come close to matching what you're drawing.
Spend more time observing the subject than observing your own drawing.
Look at what you draw, hold it in memory, then draw on paper.

>>2601986
I have read the sticky, although being the dumb ass I am I did skip some of the basics thinking I could pull off full-scale anatomy. Did some box exercises and started myself on Bridgeman. I'll keep practising boxes and shit but, just out of curiosity, is there any difference between pic related and >>2601769 in terms of how appealing the two are?
>>2602098
Yea, the new version is a little less random and more simplified, but it's still not what you should be doing. Bridgman looks nice, but it's the worst anatomy book a beginner could pick, seriously.
You never really move on from the basics, you just keep adding more and more, like a snowball. Work on your line quality and confidence, draw circles from your shoulder, learn how to draw a box/cylinder at any angle, in any perspective. Then you can grab yourself Anatomy for Sculptors or Hampton's anatomy, not Bridgman.
What to do in order to git gud at environments?
Here's some stuff I've done, and I can definitely feel the usefulness of doing these master studies, but I really have no clue what I'm doing with the thumbnails. Any tips for thumbnailing would also be appreciated.
>>2602116
Thanks bro. I took some notes about making figures from boxes from Bridgeman, but the anatomy in it seems deranged at first glance, albeit from a beginner's eye, so I'll give it a pass for now. Thanks for the advice

I don't know. It was hyperbole, I said it half jokingly. It's possible that anon gets the basics of the skull after just a few dozen skulls. He'll probably know when his understanding of the landmarks has reached an okay level, there's no set number.
More realistically I would personally spend a few nights with a skull reference and just draw simplified skulls at all different of angles, until I understood how the features change depending on the angle

eyes so big be can see the bad critique coming a mile away
What is the best book, or image compilation, or even a video about muscle placement and anatomy? I'm asking if there is a good specific one.
Am I missing out something, or am i just this bad at drawing faces? I wanna learn creating them so badly, and i tried out tracing, referencing pictures, and the loomis method, and I just can't nail it down.
>>2602546
>Tried out
And by that you mean you read the first 3 pages and then scrolled through the rest?
Also you can't construct faces if you don't have the pieces they're made of, man.
Take what I've said with a grain of salt though, I suck myself, it's just that I thought what I've written might help.

Anatomy for Sculptors.
Don't get into it until you have a good grasp of anatomy by reading from some of the classics. It's to be used as a next-level tool.
>>2602546
There's a thread right now about why beginner's shouldn't start with faces. Go read it, I agree with it 100%.
>>2602553
I'll check it out, thanks.
Why does Picasso get away with it?
fugg i wanted to start learning about the neck with vilppu, but i realized i cant even draw an upshot fo the head
>>2602557
I don't know much about this but I'd like to spit my bullshit opinion.
He's the pinnacle of mockering real art. What he did it's impossible to fix he damaged the perception of an artist. Picasso was just bantering with his paintings he was a genious because he fooled so many gullible people and still does not because his art.
Am I right /ic/?
>>2602557
Because he knows his fundamentals.
>>2602557
Because he knew what he was doing
>>2602612
Here's another one by him. If you're really good at anything you're allowed to be an airhead about it.
Speaking of fundamentals, when do i get to stop scribbling circles on paper while my shoulder gets sore?
>>2600284
Bad I knw, but more so just to accompany my question
As a beginner should I focus mainly on perfecting basic shapes/lines before attempting to learn figure drawing?
>>2602645
As i understand it, yes
>>2602624
I believe that back then you went to a master draughtsman / painter and learned everything they knew over a period of many many years at their atelier. The fundamentals were hammered in through repetition over and over until they were up to the master's standard.
>>2602645
If you can't draw basic shapes, how are you supposed to draw something as complex as a human being?
Fuck me man, hands are do darn difficult ;_;
>>2602686
Just spend a few hundred hours on them
>>2602686
Are you using a ref?
>>2602749
Yeah I'm using the timed hand exercises from NMA
Did these over 1.5 days, any tips?
>>2602757
Get a mirror and draw your own hand, more fun that way if you ask me. Plus drawing from life will help you improve a lot too.
Is self loathing and depression neccicary to get gut?
>>2602821
>depression
I don't think depression will helps you to pursue anything when I feel slightly depressed I don't want to do anything. I can't imagine what clinical depression does to a person.
>>2602848
Clinical depression is probably the most meme severe illness. No one takes it seriously, but its probably horrible to experience.
>>2602821
No. Hating who you are now is a poor substitute for trying to become something you want to be, and depression just makes you want to rot to death in your own shit.
Focus on how good it feels to improve, rather than how bad it feels to suck.
>>2602821
Yes.
>>2602821
Of course
>>2601904
lol, nah
>>2602686
Good start. Just try to fill an entire sketchbook with hands, you'll have it down by the end.
first time doing digital some random sht while was testing some stuff
>>2601152
in particular those circles around the mouth make everyone look like monkeys. Which is ok if you want to draw monkey people, I guess.
>>2602546
you're missing a mouth for starters
>>2602942
They are there to remind people of the fact that the mouth protrudes from the rest of the face. All the lines in most of those drawings will not be present in a final portrait, they are there to help beginners remember where the muscles are the to help see the planes of the face.
>>2602709

Thanks, had to do the rest of the hands for the exercises. I have a bad habit of not sticking to one problem area and filling a roughly 100-page sketchbook full of that subject.

Do any of these cokes look 3D?
>>2603069
Who were the last one?
>>2603071
The on the top right was done a couple of months ago.
>>2603088
I don't think any of them are very convincing, but I think the 3rd from top right is probably the best.
You have other issues to tackle as well anon-
Work on your line quality. Draw in long smooth lines, use your whole arm not your wrist. Perhaps you need to draw faster, experiment and figure out what's wrong with it.
I'm a beginner too so I'm not an expert but I did this to try and help explain what I mean (pic related)
>>2603069
w..what?
>>2603103
>3rd from top right
I meant left....

kek
>>2603126
I can't tell for myself.
>>2603126
I mean some people have said it looks 3D but it suffers due to the line quality, but I have no idea if the form is even close to ok.
I've been practicing a larger amount of hours because of this.
>>2602686

>fishing for compliments in the /beg/ thread when already better than the thread
Pathetic. You're already better than the majority of this thread, get to work and start making stuff already. You don't need help at this point, you need practice. Start making things and posting in the other threads.
>>2603133
I'm sorry, I just figured I'd post here before I do anywhere else because I didn't know where I belong.
If I don't belong here I'll just start posting in the general Draw thread.
Take a hard look around the thread and the images posted anon. Do you really think you fit in here? I mean if you think you are a beginner by all means keep posting here and ignore that other anon. But your definitely better than me
Grade my drawing m80s hows my rose?
>>2603133
A lot of people have been saying we should change this to the Fundamentals Thread. People of all skill levels can post here as long as they're doing studies. Also, intermediate artists won't get so butthurt when told to go to the Fundamentals thread instead of the Beginner thread.
>>2603158
Yeah, but beginners might not see fundamentals and think "Hey, thats the thread i should go to first"
And this one? I call him Trock. Tropical and Brock.
