Hello, total newb here with a question. Does it make sense to spend a large amount of drawing mechanical objects free hand, or should I use a ruler when it speeds things up? I would imagine the answer is yes practicing free hand, helps develop lining skills, but I know nothing about art.

Yep, when you can't draw straight lines its hard to produce anything of value. Drawing freehand will help you develop the ability to draw straights. Happy drawing friend.
I had problems doing long straight lines so I freehand them first and then I use ruler to fix them
Now I don't need ruler
