>Hello _artist_! I am a big fan and want to know if you have any tips about getting into the industry?
>Post your work online, draw everyday, draw a lot, especially from life!

Holy shit fuck any young artist who got lucky and successful early on and gives advice like this. These fucking people never mention networking, the necessary dilemma or getting a part-time job just to support your art, or even that luck has a huge fucking factor in whether or not an artist gets noticed and that sometimes, you might just be unlucky for years at a time.

Why the hell do artists never give luck credit to being the reason for their success? Why do they all say if they made it, its because they worked hard and deserve it?
>>
>>2593897
How could you explain luck having a factor in art at all? Is it just luck that someone woke up one day and drew a girl with a dick? Is it luck that people happen to be very into that? Or that they have excessive money to blow on dickgirls? Ultimately it boils down tp you either being found by your skill or you hitting a niche
>>
>>2593899
It's luck that you even got noticed in such a competitive field by someone who was able to give you a big opportunity. And I'm not speaking about people who draw porn on Patreon, I'm talking about people in art-based industries like comics or animation where landing a job at a well-known studio is like trying to purposely get hit by lightning.
>>
>>2593900
>tfw got a decent job at a studio with a portfolio I was personally not proud of

I think you underestimate the number of jobs out there anon. As well as the skill level needed for them.

You're missing a bit of info in your post. "Landing your FIRST job at a well known studio is like trying to get hit by lightning."

Most people at well known studios have been around the block a few times, they have a resume of experience. If you are in fact expecting to land a job at a big name studio as your first gig in the art industry, then yeah you're gonna need a shit ton of luck as well as networking and skill. Most people get there just by building up a catalog of work and references over a few years while also improving their art.

*sigh*

I went from zero to making 35k a year freelancing without any networking or dicksucking. I was even often times kind of rude to people online (not deliberately rude but I didn't return emails or messages because I simply didn't care enough or forgot). All of this in a manner of 3-4 years. Fourth year was 35k.

Anon you can make it. I'm retarded as fuck and my life is awesome. You can do anything I can, at the very least. Believe me.
>>
>>2593897
Because networking comes naturally to many people. They're naturally social and like to make bonds with other artists and professionals, while some of us socially awkward autists struggle with that the most.

Regarding luck, it's not very motivational to say "you just need to be lucky" and it doesn't help you at all. Of course it plays a role in everything, but if you really work hard in every area, you're almost certainly going to succeed sooner or later.
>>
>>2593959
How the fuck?
Porn? Furries? I've been working my ass off for the last 2 years and I've gotten a few shitty commissions. I also know other people who are much more skilled and struggle with it as well.
>>
Because people don't want to admit that you have to suck up to certain people and target certain people to befriend to become noticed/successful, it makes them look "bad" even though basically everybody does this. There is this mentality of if you're good enough you don't need to do that which is true to an extent, but it's become warped in to "if you do it at all it reflects poorly on you and you aren't skilled at all, you just know the right people who will promote you", so people shy away from admitting this.
>>
>>2593959
35k is....not that much
>>
>>2593998
What is it with amateurs on /ic/ and their belief that "networking" means sucking up to higher ups? That's not what networking is at all. Networking happens between equals. You make friends in college, you study together and keep in touch. Or you make friends with your fellow colleagues at an in-house gig. Then after some years when you need a new job, one of your friends or acquaintances might be in a position to help you get a foot in the door.

No one, and I really mean NO ONE likes faggots who try to "befriend" you with blatantly clear ulterior motives in mind. anyone can tell when that's what you are doing and it will have the exact opposite effect.

The problem is that the majority of 4chan is literally autistic and they don't know how to talk to people. As >>2593965 said it doesn't come naturally to some people
>>
>>2593968

No just regular painting, and illustrating. I completely obsessed though and the fear of fucking up my own life made me literally draw and paint 18 hours a day. Things just took off on their own.

>>2594007
Ofc not but it's a very healthy start. I never imagined I'd ever make even close to 35k.
>>
>>2594057
I don't want to make fun of you but I just want to see your art to see how good you are. Maybe I know you.

Bunch a young children in this thread who don't understand shit.

Thanks for the laughs.

>Why the hell do artists never give luck credit to being the reason for their success?
Because people will never admit luck being part of their success. It's why youtubers call themselves "comedians" or something else because they hate the fact their "jobs" require no skills. I don't even know why, really. I'd be happy if I made tons of money without putting in any effort.
>>
>>2594062

I'm far from amazing. Haven't been active anywhere online in ages though. Just felt a moral obligation to spread the good vibes after surprisingly not ruining my life for pursuing art. And yeah rather not reveal what a shit antisocial person I am lol.
>>
Not as worse as the faggots who act all smug if you ask them a question. You're a subscriber/follower/customer and they still treat you like lowly shit.

It's quite funny they talk about dislikes and haters in their streams and how much they say they ignore it. In reality those dislikes hurt them like stepping on a lego piece. They look at their ratio charts everyday and if they see an abnormal amount of dislikes it pisses them off no matter how much they say it doesn't. That's why I encourage dislike bombing to these smug shitheads, because they will keep making videos about "haters" and now it doesn't hurt them but it really does, it hurts them bad.

People really don't like negative feedback no matter how much they pretend they don't. This is especially true if you're an author and or the most fragile of creatures, the 'artist'.
>>
>>2593897
Do you expect someone to spend an hour or two writing up an entire paragraph explaining every single detail of how they got to where they are? That's just unrealistic. Some artists do that kind of stuff in blogs or youtube videos, try and seek those out (like Sycra for example). You can also find some generic career advice that doesn't specifically apply to art, but applies to anyone who wants to become a functioning adult in a modern economy (like this guy: https://www.youtube.com/user/rossmanngroup/videos).
>>
>>2594351
An hour to write one paragraph? What?
>>
>>2594355
*a dozen paragraphs

The "Post your work online, draw everyday, draw a lot" is literally the only advice you ever need. Unless you're a fucking idiot.
>>
>Hello _artist_! I am a big fan and want to know if you have any tips about getting into the industry? No. Not those tips. I mean tell me the magic easy solution. No. No that's too hard. The other tips. What'd you do? What's the trick, _artist_, don't fucking hold out on me. I want you to break it down into tiny digestible details because I'm a retard with no initiative who needs to be told exactly what to do.
>>
>>2594478
So I take it you think "Hang in there baby" is solid advice?
>>
>>2594467
What should an artist charge for commissions?
>Draw everyday!
What are good questions to ask during an interview for an art position?
>Post your work online!
What are good ways to begin networking if you don't know anyone at all? Should I start with listings on Craigslist or attend workshops?
>Draw a lot!

These tips don't help anyone past the beginner stages of art.
>>
>>2594025
>>2594056

Tell that to the entire digital online community, it's incredibly fake. No one is really friends with one another, it's all a big competition to see who can get who to notice them/collaborate with them/promote their work so people will donate to their patreon and they can earn $$$.
This is the reality of "networking" online, even on a professional level. How out of touch are you guys?
