Hi D/ic/k heads
Ive got this little set up for gouache that i want to sketch and paint with whilst on bus/train
but the damn gouche keeps cracking whenever i pour it in and let it dry. it doesn't happen with watercolor.
I dont want to pour out fresh pain every time i want to paint for 15 minutes to 30 minutes. i do that for dedicated plein air sessions.
any solutions? do you guys put gouache in half pans?
Dried gouache pans will never have the same consistency as paint straight from the tube. You can keep them from breaking up by adding gum arabic to the mix, but really, just take out a few tubes.

WINDSOR AND NEWTON DESIGNER GOUACHE.

Glycerin is normally used to keep the paints wet longer, but I don't think it'll prevent cracking like that when the pans dry. Don't quote me on it since I haven't tried it myself. Ideally you'd add some to your binder mix, or some other drying retarder like clove oil. You can also buy pre-made binders, I believe.

I've heard people recommend adding either glycerin or honey for transparent watercolors but I have never tried it myself, nor do I know if it would work for gouache or not.
I'm pretty sure there are some companies selling gouache in half-pan form, if your experiments aren't successful, you could look into that.
