you're still not quite getting it but you're close. it's not limited to just cartoons, it goes with basically any style up to realism/hyper realism if you're inventing things from you're imagination. your shape language comes out when you interpret reality too. think of it including appealing distribution of shapes and placements, tangents, silhouettes, consideration of function etc. it's tied a lot to composition too and it's definitely worth researching.

It's a working process that is mostly used by "design" artists of today. It's a non-sense practice that really originates with modern artists that many of them dislike. These new types of artists think because they find something useful to their own particular craft, and analyze past artists' paintings using such method (and they undoubtedly would see, if they are searching), that great artists, past and present, employ such a thinking process in composition, or that it would be an equally worthy study for other artists.
