What tips do you have to improve drawings without reference?
just keep drawing without reference, no shit. what did you expect?
draw with emotions and let your mind go blank. Or just go totally blank, start drawing simple shapes and see where it goes.

Learn construction from basic shapes.
You need to be familiar with your subject - If you don't know how to draw a T-Rex, you've never practiced it and never looked that closely at a picture of one, you're not going to do that well at drawing it.
What I see a lot of artists do is get a basic sketch down fully from imagination and then when it comes to details they find refs. If you find the refs first it's more tempting just to copy the reference.
