okay putting aside all anatomy problems for a moment
this is so uncanny valley to me, she has a unstylized body, with a super stylized head plopped on top. atleast stylize the whole thing man. also, shes a bit walleyed, scooch that left iris in more, and center the left iris.

Just got all colors about in, still need to refine plants, trees, rocks, lights and reflections. I've been planning this for two weeks now, still dont know if I should add that water nymph or not.

Photo is quite bad, it's somewhat hard with such a big amount of black. Size is about 133 x 103cm.
>>
>>2571226
Its like you're trying to render the head seperate from the body. also the hair seperate from the head and the tail feels like it sprouts out of nowhere
also nice hiding the hands/arm posing along with legs
Using a ref of a model in the same pose can help you a lot here
>>
>>2571351
That actually looks pretty sick, Oil I take it?

If you want to try out the nymph thing throw the photo in photoshop and try some stuff out, would be a waste to regret it later on. Make sure it adds to the painting instead of distracting away from it (unless that is your goal)

Also if you plan on continueing to work on it be sure to call it done at the right time and not to overdo it, or the painting might lose its strength

Thanks, it's acrylics. I've been painting for the last month or so, with paintings it's quite easy to figure out when to stop.

Photoshop isn't bad idea at all, I have maybe ten or so potential sketches and studies about nymphs, so not a big thing to try.

Biggest issue is now that how people would see that nymph, because it's not just evil, it's more like protector of waters. I want to make it face the opposite direction from that skull, so that it stays more innocent.
>>
Slowely, I improve.
>>
>>2571384
If you aren't a big fan of photoshop you could always paint/draw something on transparent paper and lay it over the painting

If you want to make it innocent and a protector of the water then have it interact in an harmonious way with the water (like the body materializes from the water) or something

Be wary of not accidentally adding an additional story to the painting (skulls and nymph separate) unless that is your goal

Is the nymph the cause of the deaths/skulls? does it try to save people? is it indifferent or is it horrified of the skulls? perhaps enthralled by it like how a raven collects shinies.

Stuff to think about, the drawing you posted gives it a very omnious feel, as if it were waiting to lure people into the waters
>>
>>2571392
Just keep at it, try to study the forms in the face and proportions(l o o m i s), doing a lot of studies like the one on the left can help you establish a better sense of where stuff should be and try to translate the looseness of the left sketch into the right

Try to imagine/feel the 3d shape of the body and calculate the shadows/form accordingly

I think that taking a step back, watching your painting/subject and planning your next strokes will do a lot for you, rendering comes after you figure out what to do

if that face is supposed to scream at the viewer, make his eyes/eyebrows join in on that, the jaw just looks like its hanging. A sharp light from the right, eg rim light would be good here, the right side of the first two creatures in particular just drowns in blackness. You could also up your presentation by a lot by putting a slightly lighter box behind all these figures, giving it some graphics to connect them etc

/ic/ have a pretty big hateboner for photobashed artwork, so it mightbe difficult for you to find some thoughtful criticism out here. In my opinion while working on these kind of pictures you should try to start from black/white to colored sketch blocking the major elements of the composition. Then whe you get your color scheme down you can place the photos on the picture adjusting their valor and color to fit your scene. Right now the photoshopped elements feel just to out of place to make this picture work. Thats just my opinion, keep working anon.
>>
>>2572999
The level of detail is completely inconsistent. Because you're using varying quality photos, there are some bits that are awfully blurry while others have an inexplicable amount of detail. It makes the composition uneven.
>>
>>2573022
yeah I did a rough sketch and then jumped right in with the photo plate isntead of doing a value sketch, silly of me. Thanks!

>>2573050
True, tried taking some details out intentionally to make it overall less noisy but that didnt work out.
>>
>>2573084
>taking some details out
That's important, but you also need to add detail.

You could try putting in the time and rendering some of the stuff out that should be rendered, like the floors, roof and walls.
>>
>>2573022
>/ic/ have a pretty big hateboner for photobashed artwork,

I think most people don't care so much as long as it's done well or not just "I took a photo , put it through a ps filter and painted over slightly"

There are artists that do it well Suzanne Helmigh she takes 3d models and paints over them with an understanding of artistic principlesand the reuslts come out looking good.

>very little photobashing
It's literally all photobashing except for the characters and probably to close up any seams.
>great anatomy
Bruh, most of the anatomy is covered up anyway.

Anyway, >>2572999, It's really good. depending on how long it took you to do that, that might be good for AAA realistic games or movies.

The only thing I'd say is that the foreground figure's right forearm is too long. And because it's too long the other arm is too short. I know it's foreshortened, but that's what it looks like to me.
Additionally, if you are to put your hand where that foreground figure is putting his hand on his back, you would create more of a 'triangle' shape. If you want the arms to be close up against his body, his hand would be on the other side of his body. Test it out yourself.

If you only have the time to fix one thing, I would fix that left arm.
>>
>>2573132
Oh yeah, I wanted to ask you a question too:

How long does it take for you to find the right photograph, then crop everything out that you don't want, and place it into the composition? Is there a certain place or a technique that you use to find the right picture as well?
>>
>>2572694
you mean I should paint traditionally for now? I wouldn't know where to start.
>>
>>2572736
for some reason I want to keep him in, but I'll try to lighten him up bit and make more people focus on him.
>>
I need to git gud at colors. I've been drawing for a long time and I got to one of those "I feel I'm good at this" comfortable stages you get once in a while. Before my eyes get good enough to realize my drawing skills are shit again, I want to focus on color, it's a good moment now since I never ever have done much color before in my life and right now I jumped into digital.

What's the best way to get good at colors (and rendering /coloring techniques while we're at it) when I'm not even sure what my current level is? I've already gone through the theory, but I still lack practice. How should I do that?

I think the "very little photobashing" and "great anatomy" might refer to this thread more than to my image haha.

I think it took a total of around 5 hours? Scattered working on it on 3 days in between other stuff.

I just google images, the 'similar images' options is useful too. if possible I tick the option to only show creative commons images. For props, there are some nice digital archives of museums etc. I also try to build a library locally.

Ill fix that arm, the protagonists anatomy is all jacked up anyway, the left leg is hideous, maybe spend an hour painting some details in manually.

Thanks for everyones time and opinions!

>>

yeah well there lies your problem. if you work this way, you'll end up with a character standing before a wing.
you have to work on the whole picture. everything is effecting each other, don't go from one detail to the next, focus on the whole.
>>
>>2573250
eh. i usually get most of the work of each element out of the way, then merge and work on one layer for the actual polishing. ties it together well enough for me.

i'm not out to have a complete, polished background before i get started on the elf, just a serviceable one. and right now, it's not serviceable.

so flat-looking trees are my concern, currently.

Going for some of the output, you can wonder indeed.
In principle, things were fundamentals are obviously lacking should go to beg, and things that go here should have a decent grasp of perspective, anat, ...
>>
>>2573865
If you're work cannot be critiqued in a way that doesn't boil down to "you heavily lack the understanding of basic art fundamental", then you belong to the beginner thread.

The thread is also in the best interest of the artist, you'll get better critique there than at a draw thread.
>>

I like it, only a few pointers:
1. The boy looks like he has no weight, the balloon strings above his hand should be straight and not curved
2. Placement of the left arm is a bit weird and also the boy's weight should pull him down resulting in a more straight arm, right now it looks like he is doing a one-armed chin pulling himself up on the balloons
3. Lower body looks a bit female

Take a look at pic related.

Well these are the things that came to my mind, if the "weightless" thing was intended to serve the artwork, I'm fine with that. Cool style, keep it up.

I get the idea but the truth is that /ic/ is just a beginner board. I havnt seen any drawings/paintings with decent anatomy or fundamentals in this thread. Thats probably why people who re actually good wont post on this board...
>>
>>2573981
Everything's relative.
>>
>>2573972
nice, but see how you still tend to squash the head when you're not doing a skull practice. compare the cranium from the skulls with the heads below.
>>
>>2573982
The point is, fundamentals arnt relative. Thats why theyre called fundamentals...
>>
>>2573994
Ones understanding of the fundamentals are relative to others understandings of the fundamentals.

Proper judgement on each individual case decides whether a person belongs to the /beg/ thread or not. /ic/ has an unwritten standard that defines this.

People in the draw threads might not have perfect fundamentals, but their fundamentals aren't also completely broken.

>>2573981
>I havnt seen any drawings/paintings with decent anatomy or fundamentals in this thread.

Lurk more then.
>>
>>2574003
Sure ive come across some nice paintings/drawings, but not in this specific one. And im not talking about taste, just plain fundamentals.

You've got light on the leaves giving the impression light is coming through the trees, yet theres no light on the characters and mid ground. I'm no pro, but i do think this will add a lot to the illustration; specks of light around. none the less, i like it and its very nice. This is all i can say to consider adding

Anon, you ignored everything from the reference. Draw it again making the proper measurements, pay attention to the light source (just look at how bright the right side of his face is and how dark is the left side, the light is shining directly on the right side of his face, yet you painted some uniform mid tone for his hole head some reason), and don't get caught on the details, you put way too much effort on rendering the details on the eyebrow and hair when you should be using this time to get the base proportions correctly.

Your sky could stand to be brighter. Right now it's restricting the value range you can use on your foreground. In general the sky should always be a few shades lighter than anything else in your picture.

also:
- when you start, don't use softwarey things like th glowing effect, it will look cringey when you're a noob. Limit yourself to a quasi traditional workflow
- use a black layer set to color to check your values
-now is the time to go study, seriously.
>>
>>2575414
>>2575373
Sometimes the kind of problem you might have with a piece can't be summed up quickly in a helpful way. Like if the anatomy is all sorts of fucked saying "anatomy's fucked" doesn't help, but going into the necessary depth can take more time then it might be worth. It's even more difficult when a picture is flawed in some fundamental ways that requires a serious lecturing to correct.

the third one doesnt match the first too but i like it the most. defining those planes of the collar and the shoulder gives it much more personality than simply indicating a separation in the suit of the first two.
also his body just has a better shape in the third one, the front and back read as blob while the third reads as chunky but functional

>>2575591
Like what >>2575598 said, I also didn't realize the 3rd one is different. I'm digging the collar though since it gives it more form and helps break up the body in a few more pieces.

As for the expressions, they are cute looking, but the simplicity isn't conveyed very well. If you're going to use a "simple" style, either go for super minimal or use more detail. I'd suggest the former though, since the 6th expression is telling me the face is just a projection of some sort.

I love those expressions and palette. Confused by the actual design though, because the head (the pink ball) seems to be encased in the a transparent bubble (the yellows) but that's not readily clear at first glance. I think you should push that idea further.

Also with the current head/helmet design, you won't be able to see the lovely squash/stretch of the emotions you've got going on, especially the screaming face.

Your anatmomy is all sorts of sloppy, but it's a given that comes with the territory of doing pictures like this. Honestly if I were to do a redline I'd probably ruin the energy in the picture. its a tough ballance to have such extreme foreshortening with relative anatomical accuracy and cool poses. You seem to be on the right track though.\

Her proportions are outta whack I won't deny that, but in the original depiction she's tall with long arms and legs. I never drew anyone with long limbs so i didn't know how.
Shading is more of a recent thing i started to do, this was a sketch at first but i felt like coloring it for the sake of completion.
>Shade with color
I did?, i had blurred them into the main skin color so they wouldn't stand out as much, the shades are darker tones of her skin.

>that's good, you should work at disney
Those responses. Fuck those people. Never show them anything again, or you're doomed to become a Dobson.

The problem with your pose:
If women stand like that (she clearly is embarrassed) they would clench their arms more inwards to try to cover more of their body.

Your anatomy:
An adult person should be around 7 and a half heads in proportion. Your character is 4 heads and quarter. This results in weird proportions for the rest of her body.
Female shoulders are generall not that wide. They usually are only as wide as their hips. Male body proportion has wider shoulders. Shoulders should also hang a bit lower, upper arm should be a bit shorter than lower arm.
Breasts don't work like that. There are endless good tutorials you should take a look at: https://www.google.de/search?q=how+to+draw+breasts
Hips look dislocated. I know it's very trendy to draw that thigh gap, but the way you're doing it looks very painful and not natural at all. Also, it would be impossible to see the ass cheeks from this perspective, unless her ass is really saggy which doesn't play well with a thigh gap. This is something you find a lot in H-Doujins.

And so much more. Too lazy to go on.

You should _really_ try drawing this way: draw a skeleton first and then put the flesh on that. If you get it right, your proportions will look fine. It's a tad more work, but it helps tons.
>>
>>2576641
>I did?
yeah man, you'd be better paced in the beginner thread. learn some things about value and shading and come back
its not the limbs being long thats a problem, theres just a basic lack of knowledge of anatomy and proportion. you're just guessing where to put your next line without understanding the shapes you're trying to convey

2.5 hours, charcoal. 18x24.

I need to work on construction and the distant eye confused me so I didn't draw it. Is there a trick to matching eyes in a 3/4 view?
>>
>>2576217
Just add a few white reflections to the top to give the bubble a little more plasticity.
>>
>>2576657
Thats one huge forehead. There is no trick.

Thanks, that's actually a good idea. I'll give it a shot.

I guess thinking my art as "meh" or "okay" doesn't translate to intermediate so that's more of my fault. I've looked at tutorials on shading and color theory but i guess it hasn't helped.

>>2576682
But remember, it'll only work if your skeletal mesh is 100% accurate. Otherwise you'll blow yourself to Weirdproportionvalley again.

good riddance, god speed anon.

If your hair is that thin, then it makes sense. Your eyes are at the halfway point between top of the head and your chin.
>>
>>2576698
Well yea, he asked about matching eyes in 3/4, not where they are on the head.

>>2576695
good riddance to the job? if so. i agree.

Bad anatomy?
>>

It seems the highest point on his head is at the back of his skull. Scrunch his forehead forward. At this angle the slant of his forhead shouldn't be that pronounced.

Your sky needs to be waaaaay lighter. The sky should be a few shades lighter than anything in your picture save for direct reflections of the sun.
>>
>>2576722
rendering way too soon, focus on getting the sketch/drawing right first

To add to this, I'll be honest, it seems you're biting off more than you can chew. You should try to do simpler pictures that allow you to focus on particular fundamental details, right now your attention is being spread out too thin. You're trying to figure out perspective, anatomy, value, color, details etc. None of them look like you really know what you're doing, it seems you're just throwing shit at a wall to figure out what works. Which is fine, that's how you learn, but you're spreading yourself thin which can be exhausting.

You should do more pictures you're confident you can tackle and focus on improving one thing at a time.

It's tough to give advice to this partially BECAUSE IT'S SIDEWAYS but also because this picture doesn't show us how much understanding you have of anything really. It looks like a highschool drawing that you spent a lot of time on to make it look half decent.

The only thing I can really say is that you have patience and that's good. Or wait, you don't have patience because you only draw 10 mins at a time. ... that's bad.

I'm betting you didn't have a lot of fun drawing this? That should be your goal, enjoying spending time drawing. Practice drawing something you like, but quicker. Personally I get a huge boner out of drawing the human figure quickly, so I fill my sketchbook with 1 1/2 inch tall featureless humans and through doing so I've learned a lot about anatomy and proportion and keeping that consistent while also using interesting poses. Then when I want to spend more time on a drawing I have the confidence to have more fun while I do it because i'm not worrying about major problems such as proportion/movement etc.

This drawing is stiff as hell and it shows you're less confident in drawing an interesting picture as a whole than you are in getting into the nitty gritty of detail. Unfortunately detail is at the bottom in the hierarchy of what's most important in an image.

tldr, work on your fundies and find a way to enjoy doing so.

Ii would like some critique on the shading and the current state of my drawing
The colors looks a bit off in pic related, this one >>2576048 is a non-cropped closer photo

I'm pissed with the non symetry, I wanted it to be perfectly straight but some "body" parts are off and non symetric (i'm not talking about mechanical elements)

I also don't really know what to do with the background.
At first I thought about something simple and minimalstic but maybe something more detailed would look better

that's neat, I like the style. Is that a white pen ?

It's practically a meme to say this but work on your fundamentals. Start from the ground up. You might not like this but if you want to draw naked people really well and not have the ability to rely on clothing to hide mistakes, you have to fucking learn anatomy.

My suggestion: Draw skeletons for a good little while. Learn how the bones look and how they join together. So much about how the human body looks in different poses is entirely defined by the bone structure underneath. If you take a little time to memorize the bone structure, you'll find your understanding of musculature will skyrocket.

Bump, I guess

Yeah bad anatomy. Learn how a real human body works before trying to exaggerate it.

Hey /ic/, I apologize for the generic question, but based on your own experience, how do you get better as fast as possible?

Let me expand on that; obviously drawing every day is very important, but equally as important is what you draw and the exercises you do. I already do gesture practice each day because I've heard it helps. I've also heard bottles are good for symmetry and construction. I was just hoping for some insight from people who are much, much better artists than I am.

Everyone always talks about the fundamentals, but what exercises actually teach those?

Thanks in advance.

How does this look? I'm veeeeeeery lazy (and weak) at environments, so I like to fallback on fog and mist. Other than adding color, I just plan to add more stretch marks to his gut and maybe a bit more bumpy texture to his head.

Something about hear head size/proportions seems off... I can''t determine if she's a shot woman or a child.
>>
>>2576835
Draw something from imagination
When you get stuck/done, look at whats wrong with it (lets say hands)
Study said wrongness by googling photo ref & looking at how other people tackle the same problems (dont just randomly sketch, understand it)
Try drawing it again
Compare the 2
Share with IC in the beginner thread so we can give some tips
Rinse & Repeat
