Choose photos with good lighting. Draw the forms not flat shapes. Don't be afraid to tweak things instead of copying overly literal.

Drawing from movie/tv show stills any good? Lighting is good in most shots. Can draw the same face from different angles and expressions. Though there is some detail loss if it's not 1080p, compared to proper portrait photography. Still works though, or?

Yeah it can be great. Just realize that a lot of lighting in movies isn't how it would appear in real life. They use lots of lights to pop out shadows or add rimlights, they use reflector sheets etc. and most movies these days are pretty heavily edited in post for different colours.
