Unmotivated Losers has open spots!

http://unmotivatedlosers.deviantart.com/

We are an /ic/ based art dA group running since 2013 dedicated to the improvement of each member's artistic abilities through peer support, critiques, and friendly competition(although most of the communication happens in our skype group).

Here's the link to How it works page: http://unmotivatedlosers.deviantart.com/journal/How-it-Works-v-3-400235229

Your current skill level doesn't matter.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Why are people tiered? Also why are better artists in lower tiers?
>>
>>2554767
Why don't you read the their FAQ thing? Are you really that lazy?
>>
>>2554767

>Why are people tiered?
It's just the system we set up. Tiers show who has the most XP.

>Also why are better artists in lower tiers?
UL has been runnning for a while. People with different skill levels join at different times.
>>
>>2554723
How has the "kicking people if they don't submit in a week" worked. Do you kick new people a lot? Have you ever had an interesting member that failed to submit and was hard to kick?

Has it always been in place?
>>
>>2554723
I think people would be more willing to join your group if the name weren't so deprecating.
>>
>>2554785
Just a member but I think it has worked really well. A problem I've had with other "artist groups" has been that people quit drawing or aren't heavily motivated, but they still hang around and eventually the group just becomes half videogames and half art.
>>
>>2554793

It's ironic, no one in the group takes it seriously. The name also has a quite a history.
>>
>>2554785

It worked out great.
Yes, we kick new people a lot.
Yes, we had interesting members that failed to submit and were kicked.

But. Kicked people can always rejoin. Which happened with a LOT of the members.

>Has it always been in place?
Yes.
>>
>>2554798
>implying I don't take it seriously
>>
One of our members just died so we're looking for a replacement.
>>
>>2554821
Seriously? Who died? Switch here. Uni leaves me no time to draw ;-;
>>
>>2554833
Devin died after playing Path of Exile for 7 days straight.
>>
>>2554835
Fuck I thought he actually died for a second. You scared me! Hey can I come back?
>>
>>2554845
yeah I'm just memeing, nobody heard from him for a week and he doesn't respond to messages, so people get a bit worried.
sure, come back anytime

I want to join but I don't really use DA for anything other than big portfolio pieces. :(

I might suck it up and join anyway.
>>
>>2554723
I want to try. I need to do other stuff besides studies but studies will have to come first.
>>
>>2554785
maybe I'm just the type of person who needs structure, but I like the weekly req. Sometimes its a bit of a chore because the deadline rolls around and Ive been too busy all week to make something. in those cases ill just do a quick 1 hour study of something, But in the end it's satisfying to keep up with. I feel like it's been very helpful for me so far.
>>
>>2554896
same. but it's worth it. I basically just use DA for this group now
>>
>>2554901
Haha, I asked if there was any open spaces left anyway. I like the idea of the weekly requirement and quests, I could do with more motivation to do things like that.
>>
>>2554896
Use the scraps section
So pretty much no one will see them
>>
>>2554900
I get that I'm trying to get through these loomis and scot robertson books but I know in the back of my mind that that's like doing drills and never sparring so I NEED some kind of push to do some creative work.
>>
>>2554906
Whelp! message sent we'll see how it goes. I like the idea of the group and the quests all seem like really helpful stuff to do anyways.

The only way you can join it is by following "How It Works" page. You sent a note to the admin, and they send you an invite. You accept it, and by doing it you join automatically.

Not really,

I joined 2 years back when I was uttershit and they helped me a lot.
Don't expect a back rub though, people will tell whats wrong with your piece formost, instead of the otherway around.

Joined, worked hard while in the group (always top tier), quit, worked hard on my own because I didn't get anything from nor need the group, got good, currently getting into the industry.

There's a skype group, people are always online.

Is this like a weaker version of LAS? Once per week submission instead of dailies.
>>
>>2555092
portfolio?
>>
>>2555101
Currently LAS has no critique or community, just posting art.
>>
>>2555086
It can be good to put "critique" in the title to make people notice that more, the skype is more immediate since you can instantly get a response on something.
>>
>>2555106
No friend, Sorry.
While I love you guys, you do have a toxic reputation. I have nothing to prove to you guys since I am currently doing what I claim to be doing and that is enough for me.
I joined a couple of months after the group started, you guys have improved a ton since then, keep going, I believe in you guys!
>>
Are there hot girls or is it a sausagefest with fatties?
>>
>>2555111

>get anxiety and only post good works instead of the worst
>>
>>2555113
we once had 4 grills in there it was nice.
>>
>>2555118
Not Katawa, Admire his work tho.
>>
>>2555116
I don't think that's going to be a problem at all, all of us probably don't get something at one point. The only problem we have had was with someone who absolutely refused to take critique.
I know that anxiety feel, but once you've done it's just like "oh, that wasn't bad at all, and I probably should've done it sooner", and over time you get over it
>>
>>2555119
we literally have more girls here
>>
>>2555116

>tfw going to ask critique too much and skype will group hate you

If you listen to critique - you'll improve. People here like to see other members respond to crits and grow. So it's the opposite, they'll be more eager to help you.

Yes.

Yes, it's a troll version. It was made by an awesome group member who made it.

>>
Do I have to Skype to join? I won't have a computer for a few weeks.
>>
>>2555198
No but it's the best for instant critique
>>
Is this handled completely through DA? The question I'm more specifically asking is if submissions have to meet DA's AUP?
>>
>>2555206
Ah, never mind, your frontpage answered my question.
>>
>>2555206
Unfortunately yes. However, in the skype group we allow NSFW art to be posted for critique. We just ask you censor things to meet dA standards.

UL also does not allow "fetish art" even if it meets AUP. Our finished folder was turning into just censored porn haha.
>>
>>2555215
Well, to be blunt, 'fetish art' is my primary interest in drawing. Even more so since the amount of time per week I can draw is pretty limited. I spend what time I have drawing mostly what I like, though I would like to get better faster.

It's no matter I suppose, I don't really post to DA anyways.
>>
>tfw not creative
what if I cant think of stuff to draw

That's what quests are for.

thanks for joining guys
>>
I'm an unmotivated loser who would love to learn to draw, this might just really help me. I'll certainly consider it if there's still room. Thanks.

Is it a terrible circlejerk though? A lot of 4chan derived groups that I've seen tend to be filled with attention whores and tripfags in denial.
>>
I joined like a year or 2 ago and it was a pretty shit group to be quite honest. And DA is just a terrible platform to use now.

Yes, a terrible circlejerk.

>>2558551
Yes, pretty shit group. Stay out of it.
>>
>>2558556

Well for one thing all you had to do was submit one thing per week...per WEEK. Most people were doing just that or the bare minimum and that's why UL has such a high revolving door. Admittedly I was one of them, that's why I joined the group. I would say it's great for people who are just getting into art, not sure if art is something they want to pick up, a hobbyist who post doodles to their facebook, or simply just unmotivated (hence the name).

I think UL encourages the bare minimum. It's hard to feel a sense of competition when you only have to post to the group once to remain in the group. There is an exp element to that but what's the point of that when there are phone apps that accomplish the same thing and more. And seeing people drop every week like call center agents feels like most people don't take it seriously. You have artists of varying degrees of skill; some already intermediate level but most at beginner level.

What's really demotivating to me is that you'd think you'll have friendly rivals who are on par with where you're at and then you see them give up after a week or 2 with the cycle starting anew. It can be very lonely and the subtle circlejerking from the longtime members doesn't help either (although they deserve their attention for their hard work).

In summary I think UL is a poor concept for someone who wants to get serious because there aren't enough penalties. It's too laid back and not enough fire under the users ass to preform.
>>
>>2558593
sound analysis
>>
>>2558593
as a member i do agree. i dont see the falacy in the people creating the concept tho

its same everywhere, and the system will never be perfect enough to capture enough motivated and willing people, especially actually since its striving for 'all-kinds-of-skill-and-taste' people. the concept would have to rebuild in that sense, where the only people accepted in the group are not only willing to do shit, but capable of it, on par with others and possibly having similar tastes/directions with their works.

besides that, the group still works for the people that want it to work. a lot of beginners get demotivated and/or stagnate because they see and realize that for certain skill levels you need to improve and study which takes effort in some cases. people stop advicing you when youre a beginner posting every second work because there simply isnt anything but the playfulness to be criticised and it gets boring.

the group however works for those willing to engage in social activities, get around hangouts and usually connect to people from UL in one more way than UL. so it can have a pleasant feeling for those willing to invest in that.

it would probably be very good to mention that this group can be helpful moreso for the artistic sociality, where you just meet people that like the same stuff and have a dicussion with them without anonymous trolling.
