Why do you charge so little for your commissions?

To show I'm better than those industry faggots by letting even the poor get their dues.

no one cares about your shitty art

Feebleminded.

Obviously it should have been $950 if you compare it to color pricing.
>>
>>2552771
It only compares size though. Fandom are clearly amateurs compared to industrial pros.

>amateur artist demanding industry prices from a private client
>>
>>2552983

clearly op was saying there are people trying to pay pros the shitty prices you see on deviantart and tumblr cause they don't understand muh art skills.
>>
>>2552771

if you guys want to make a living doing this you have to diversify. do some smut, do some technical wikihow noskill type illustration that essentially just solves a problem for a client and has no artistic aspirations, do some commercial run of the mill gameart, and then also do the kind of art you love to do. within 10 years you'll be at a spot where you essentially have commercial-art-fishing-rods in 4 different ponds, 4 different niches, and you'll hopefully have a bit of traction in everyone of them. you can then take on the good paying high responsability jobs, down/outsource the lesser ones, and hopefully eventually make a good living doing ONLY the stuff you love to make.

it's all basics of running a business, very very principles to be aware of. if you are not willing to use your skills to do unglamorous work, you will spend decades waiting for your dream career to work out.

if you do what i suggest you can easily make 30k annually, and reach 50k after a few years.
>>
>>2552990

this is terrible advice.

30k is not a lot of money for art, neither is 50k. just because you typed out a paragraph doesn't mean you are right about anything.
>>
>>2552990
Define easily
>>
>>2552808
I like that.
>>
>>2552990
Bullshit. Stop talking nonsense if you're not making that amount of money yourself. Even if you did, you're an exception. No one wants to see your portfolio full of furry porn, sci fi concept art, technical illustrations etc., it has to be coherent.
>>
>>2553034

Be reasonable anon, I don't think he's suggesting that you put it all in the same portfolio or even on the same website. If you're going to draw smut on the side, and you live in a country where it is stigmatized it's common sense to keep it separate from your main work.

forgot one other very popular and clearly profitable niche: teaching

another /biz/ protip: you can direct traffic one of your brands generates towards another. 'btw check out these amazing tutorials the guys over at 'totallynotmediversifyingmyincome.com' are doing! i learned so much from those guys!. be an entrepreneur anons. it's so much more fun than just being an artist anyway.

>>2552992
>30k is not a lot of money for art, neither is 50k
i didn't claim it was. i said you can easily start out making 30k annually by following my advice, and reach 50k after a few years. where you go from there is up to you and there's certainly a lot of room for growth in whatever direction you want.

my basic point was: you won't start out making 30k annually easily if you are hell bent on doing fantasy illustration. and you won't reach 50k after a few years if you are hell bent on doing fantasy illustration. this is all freelance btw, if your goal is to work at a studio none of this applies and i have no experience there.

>>2552996
not requiring an excessive amount of time/energy investment.

>>2553034
you would not be doing these under a single name. i am making that amount of money. not 50k yet but i'd take any bet i'll be there in about a year. the trend is there.
>>
>>2552771

im still poor as fuck even if i have a good skill and work with games. I created a thread once where i was pulling my hair off and butthurting around because i sold my illustration (multiple characters on 1 screen more than 5 characters it was for a videogame) for......100$. ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS for that amount of job.
fucking shit. Im still mad about that.
Its understandable thought - im not very popular on sites like Instagram or Tumblr. Mostly on shit like Behance or Twitter because there i have more "professional normies" groups but i never had luck in fandoms so i dont have funs and it fucking cuts my self esteem to the zero level.
>>
>>2553186

You are stupid.
>>
>>2553186

1.look for work where actual money is, usually something that is a studio job (conceptart, layout, storyboarding ect;)

2. build portfolio and apply to jobs in said area

3. either get job and monies or get rejected and improve your skills.

Stop trying to make a career in shit where there is an extremely low base pay and almost no opportunity to grow.If you do your going to be poor I guarantee it.

Most people into porn might not be the age of teenagers, but they damn sure still have the mentality of teenagers. I can't stand most porn fags. Only a select few are not fucked in the head in some way.

Do "industry standard" prices account for the fact that the art will be used by the client to make money, and will be reproduced a lot in books, posters, advertisements, etc?
>>
>>2552771

There are doctors who would charge you a thousand dollars, and you're totally free to go to a cheaper doctor if you want.
You can even go to some "medicine man" who's into chakra reading and will heal your aura for 10$.

>>
>>2558597

OP's image is for editorial illustrations for established magazines. It is not to be used for pricing Tumblr-trash commissions.
>>
>>2554019
Yes. The big money in (most) illustration industries comes from the license you sell to use the illustration - not just the time spent making it.

The wider the usage, the more money you can demand. A job that takes 10 hours to complete can make you $300 or $3000, depending on how it's used.
>>
Maybe because keeping bunch of nerds in their basement for longer amount of time, while completely destroying their any chances of social and sex life, doesn't sound like a real job. I mean, you are going to be an artist, don't you think you would paint something that's useful?
