>>
>>2551874
when you want to draw a character several times, but always end up with a different face:

- always keep your old drawings of the character open when doing a new one.
- don't worry about changing the face during the first few pictures, just keep drawing the character more often.
- you will notice how the face gets more similar each time, because you will get more used to the unique features of the face.
- at the end you character might not look like the initial design, but you can now draw them without further problems!

Give the chin a new shape. The size and position of the eyes, the nose. Try a different set of expressions.

So I tried to basically re-sketch this. Tried to have less negative space on the faces. I'm wondering if the basic pose in general is working, or do I just toss this? I feel like I'm fighting with it too much.

Also trying to figure out what to do for my noses. I'm a tumblr faggot where they like that ugly nose shit, and unfortunately my weird noses seem to be the thing people like the best about my art (on there) for some reason. And I'm weak and will cave to what gets me more popular.

I bought the EX version which usually goes for $219 but I got it on cyber Monday for $80, the biggest selling point of the EX version is that it makes it a lot easier to make a comic, it also comes with some 3D features akin to MMD which let you place 3D models for reference (or tracing, which is what most people use them for)

You might want to study up on your serratus anatomy.
>>

>>
>>2551233
What the fuck am I staring at.

Stop making up so creases and unnecessary skin folds in his anatomy. The open part of the trapezius is centered around the seventh cervical vertebrae of the spine; and the top and middle portion attach to the spine of the scapula, with the 2 major forms of the infraspinatus and the teres major being pronounced as he is pulling his arms back. The latissimus dorsi orignates under the third lowest portion of the trapezius and attaches to the anterior portion of the humerus; creating a swooping motion right under the teres major.
Also those lines near the posterior obliques make no sense. The erector spinae also don't create horizontal creases like that.

>>2552302
Face on the taller one looks a lot better in this, though the eye and eyebrow on the side closer to the viewer are shorter than on the far side - if anything it should be the other way around because of perspective.

The shorter one's face is still very off. The head actually seem more or less fine above the eyesockets (hard to tell with his hair), but then the face just kind of goes down and inward instead of outward again, yet you gave him a very strong jawline on the side of the face that is closer to the viewer.
On the taller guy you made the cheeks/cheekbones curve outward again after the eyes and gave him a chin and a less extreme jawline, which looks a lot better.

Pose has issues, but close interaction between characters is one of the toughest things to get right, so don't let it get to you if you're struggeling with it.
Right now it looks like the shorter guy is turned more twoards the camera than the taller one, almost as if he's trying to get away/wriggle out, but I'm not sure if that's the intention here or not. Is he trying to lift the other guy's arm or holding onto him?
Might help to look at a few photos of couples in similar poses. You don't have to use a single picture as ref if you don't want to, but it can help you gain a better understanding of how these kind of poses work and how their bodies should be positioned.

As for noses, just do what you like. After all, you are the person who looks at your own art the most.
>>
>>2552488
Thank you so much for all of this. I really appreciate it. Having stuff pointed out to me like this does help me a lot, even if I don't improve as much as I should (I try though).

And it's funny about the shorter guy. The whole time I am drawing this, I wasn't able to decide if I want him to be enjoying the hold or not.

Artist are their own worst critic. I've gotten better, but It's a far reach from where I want to be. Plus I feel when I do these I'm not particularly bettering my art. This is like 3 months ago? I just don't really know what to tackle anymore, but hopefully, maybe, /ic/ critique will give me a better idea what to aim for.

>>2552721

The twist of that rightside girls upper torso seems a bit weird. The other girl looks a bit awkward aswell, like she's trying to get up but her spine doesn't particularly agree with that idea. Plus her hair has a lot of volume for someone on the floor (I'm supposing you drew the head upright without considering it at first). Gravity should be pulling it more downward overall. Sorry if my critique isn't super concise.

mspaint and mouse is underrated, last time my tablet broke i spent a couple months figuring it out, it's actually kinda neat, you gotta be super gestural with your lines (at least i did, hahaha)

oh, and study arms/forearms/elbows a bit more, your walf dude's arm on the left (his right) is lookin funky
also i'd heavily suggest focusing on legibility, possibly through exaggeration, i can barely tell what's going on with the whole sword handle/blade thing there (you've also created an unfortunate tangent between the end of his snout and the blade part near his head)

>>2553235
>>2553281
minor suggestion, once you've found your line, go back an clean the finding lines up jus a smidge, don't gotta go full on cleanup mode but it'd help your sketches look a bit more presentable to non-art people (if that's a thing you care about, if not then no worry, especially if you plan on inking and/or painting over)

also the way the forearm connects to the upper arm in >>2553281 is a wee bit off, look up some arm muscle charts and pay attention to how the brachioradialus/extensor carpi radali (outer forearm muscles) both extend into the upper arm and slightly overlap the bicep and brachialis (muscle between the bicep and the tricep)

the torso/abdomen is facing to the right yet the legs/hips are facing directly forward with no twist in the abdomen to indicate the body is twisting, also the hips are not rotated correctly to be able to show the buttcheeks the way you are between the thighs

>>2553370
be careful, that's approaching code lyoko tier in terms of forehead. even if the hair is poofy keep in mind silhouettes and ratios, unless of course you just really like having the features lower than usual on the face, in which case you're doing decently. i'd suggest working some shoulders in there to complete the bust if it's just gonna focus on the head, it helps make it feel a bit more professional (unless of course you're just practicing, again, do what you want, i'm just offering an outside perspective)

>>2553393
work on shape design if you want to do cartoony styles, her leg shapes are way too simple and boring compared to the rest of what's going on in the image
the shading on the hat is off on the left (her right) side, also avoid going that detailed with the wrinkles/shading on the top half of the shirt when everywhere else is much more simple, it draws too much attention compositionally (tho if you fix the legs this might not be much of a problem anymore). the feet also feel off

if you're curious what i meant by shape design, look up some of the concept art/model sheets for zootopia, cory loftis has a whole page about legs if i remember correctly. admittedly this'll only really tell you how they decided on designs but hopefully it'll get you thinkin about how to think with shape more, good luck, i belieb in you nwn

Hmm... Does darkening the items in the BG and adding the white to outline the edge of the character from it help a bit with the readability.

Also yeah, the arms all sorts of funky. I was working off a ref that had a similar position, but about 0 muscle. The arm probably should of been raised more and backed.

If you don't mind me asking what do you mean legibility through exaggeration? Just make the sword read more with the hilt? Or like exaggerate it's proportions/effects to get a better idea of what it does/belongs. I originally had the idea of having the sword tangle around his arm/sword handle and come off of that, but it was just too much in the forefront.

Sorry to ask a lot, I very rarely get critique. Love the big comb.

>>2553341

really flat and dimensionless, mainly because the direction of body parts are everywhere so it's not particularly possible to read what's going on. I'de probably work a good bit more on anatomy/perspective.

Honestly there is a lot wrong with arms and hands. the arms have no foreshortening and the hands are way to small.
I like your other stuff, I feel like you have a lot of potential. You are very active, a lot more active than I could ever be. I can see your improving little by little. Keep practicing, keep trying different poses, trust me they wont look good but you wont know what looks right until you know what looks wrong.

So while I was testing a new tablet I decided to redline your drawing and with that give you some tips on how to make it work.

The main reason it doesn't work, is visual intrest.
Most artists want dynamic poses and impactful facial expressions for their art and so should you.
As you can see the idea of your drawing is great, many different things to look at, direction of body and head are different etc.
The problem however lies in the stiffness of the pose as well as some anatomical errors that cause this stiffness.
You can see in my redline how she really bends her upper body to face to the right and how the shoulders do most of the work to point the head in the opposite direction. This build up visual interest, which then makes the drawing better to look at.

What I also noticed was that the clothing was kind of "glued" on. with little to no feel of how the clothing works. You can shade all you want but the sillouette and the folds make the difference. The blue color in the redline tackles this problem by making the clothes more loose and thereby giving it some actual weight, which is really important when drawing clothes onto existing characters.

The last point I want to bring up is anatomy.
When you look at your original work you can see that there is not much anatomy in there,
crotch is way too low and the head way to big with a neck that simply doesn't to anything.
The middle part of the body, i.e. breasts to pelvis, look like a bean rather than something organic.
The arms also looke like noddles and not something that could actually hold a gun.

The biggest tip I can give you about anatomy is simply to look at muscle groups, then simplify them and attach them to a skeleton.
This works great for bodies and also for faces. And it will quickly enable you to think of how arms and legs can bent and what creates visual intrest.

Peace

it means you have to wake up, forget about instant gratification and leave details/filal lines for the next week and start focusing on the ground instead of the roof

You always have to aim for a solid under-drawing from where you can 'trace' over it your wished results.

You're thinking in 2D. Your foreshortening is made by overlays, but that's not all it takes. You're thinking shapes, each leg, the butt, the tits, the face, each arm. All of these are shapes, you're not working form.

yup, you draw a ( line for the sockets and some textures on the butt. But these are not even following the true form it would have
>>
>>2555065
Ahh thank you. So if I wanted to practice "thinking in 3d" could I just draw over references with cylinders and other 3d object under the skin?

Also I guess curves curves curves. After comparing yours to mine I get what you mean by saying it is flat. But I don't really get why you made her hands bigger.
>>
>>2555079
Not him, but I'll point out another tool he used was the socks, which accentuate the curves down the legs. It allows you to essentially force a defined curvature/shape onto the form.

Trying to figure out her height for a sculpture. Going by the m4 which is 75.6 cm, she only stands at 1.75 m4, which is about 132cm. Let's just bump her up to 1.4m. Still, doesn't that seem too short? Also the gun is in 3/4 so isn't there a bit of foreshortening as well? Meaning she is actually even smaller? Help me senpaitachi
>>
>>2557650
Nigger, the whole thing is drawn in perspective
it's going to be hard as fuck to measure her height like that

Perspective looks to be slightly above her eye level. It's not like an extreme angle.

are you Magister? loved your work but that torso is just ridiculous w/o huge tits. also I don't think OP is aiming for that kind of proportion
>>
>>2557677
nah, im just a melon

i mean it's just a way to visualise how to form the torso rather than how the torso is shaped after the final product. hey it works for me so lol

i know that its a bit late to critique you on your form, but i feel that its necessary.
first ill say i do like this character design. its interesting.
the pose however is off balance. i feel that almost all the problems are around the waist. its hard to say exactly what i mean, but i think the waist is too thin and this problem is accentuated by the right leg.... like, the way youve drawn it it doesnt look like theres enough room for both thighs for how big the legs are, and how narrow his waist is. a part of what makes this look a little akward is how straight the right leg is up through the torso.
i think that what would help this is if you had more of a curved line from the foot to the torso with the apex at the waist.
for how tall he is, the head is too small as well. i would consider shortening the length of his body... particularly the legs and abdomen.
otherwise. good pic.

How does one master clothing folds to this degree? This is something that continually fucks up my drawings
>>
>>2557789
>master clothing folds to this degree
lol
seriously tho. do still lives of folded cloth, and look at some art that you admire the clothing on and imitate the way they draw folds and what not

Need help with dynamic&form. feel like current pose is a bit too stiff when looking from the thumbnail
>>
>>2557793
i think its pretty good so far anon, but maybe if you raised the right leg up so it broke the contour of the body into an angle at the waist it would loosen up the pose.
>>
>>2557677
What book is that anatomy drawing on the right from?

thx m8
with your fix it contrast a lot, mine went too rigid at the end, the blue clothing placement neither helps to read the silouette so it reads even more stiff :/

>>2557793
draw the right arm with foreshortening, the robes doing a spiral around it, just don't hide that hand
values are great, she's cute, just do anything else with the right arm
>>
>>2557796
Thanks anon! that was helpful
>>2557875
already tried that but it doesn't look as good. it doesn't feel right with the mood of the picture. maybe I'm just shit at foreshortening though

oh shit that look fucking great. I was going for dim and ominous tone originally but this looks so good. I guess I'll have to change that. thank you so much anon!

fuck I didn't notice you had a tripcode
>>
>>2557910
I think the little display of power in her hand should be more resentful, ominous and/or aggressive, not gentle like what you have there.

She is Jeanne Alter after all.
