How so? As far as comics and manga go, Berserk is a very engaging, well told fantasy story with interesting characters. It's only major flaw is the pacing in later chapters.

Because Vagabond isn't that interesting. The art is good yes but the story? Honestly, it's not interesting. I could read funny comics and it's more entertaining. It's one of those fictional works everyone says are so great but can't talk about at any length at all. If I would compare Vagabond to books, music, or just other comics then I'm afraid it can't compete at all. I would rather read about the real Miyamoto Musashi than the dumbed down version that's for kids because they need pretty drawings to go with the poor writing.

vagabond is based on miyamoto musashi, his life and on someone's novel. you're giving too much credit on the writing there. It's mostly based on historical facts. This is not to look down on documentary content, but in terms of creativity, that's a clear winner.
Berserk is also inspired of some things, but it's a completely fictional world. Also, no the art is very beautiful in vagabond yes. very pleasing to the eye. Is it more technically advanced than berserk ? fuck no. There is only one contestant in manga and that's yusuke Murata with One punch man.

I'm not saying it's perfect, there's too much dumb comedy later on. But before that? I think it's a great manga. However I'm not sure if Miura can finish strongly. A lot of japanese author write long fictional works which does make sense if you want to make more money but it's hard to write long stories and they don't seem to plan long-term. Berserk is basically a story that doesn't know what it wants at first, gets better later on, and then it gradually becomes a simple RPG party and the monsters they meet. That works in games because at least there's gameplay but a manga is nothing without story.

I think so. How many times can you read about the exact same character in fiction without getting bored? I would write a long post but... it'd be too boring. Long story short is that Vagabond is mostly loved for it's art, not its writing. Even the fans admit the art is the high point which isn't what I would consider high praise. The reason why literature tell the best stories isn't because it has more advantages than any other medium, it's because it can only focus on story and no matter what you do can't compensate with explosions or flashy techniques. There's tons of well drawn comics out there but how good is the story? When I was younger I used to think epic works needed to be long but Vagabond is 37 volumes of farming. It's unfair to compare a manga to the greatest stories ever told but at the end of the day why would I want to read anything average?

I've read both. I can understand the appeal of Berserk, but if I had to choose one of them to read for the rest of time, I would go with Vagabond.
You probably think Vagabond is boring as a result of its slow character development. It's essentially a story about the mc who matures over the course of the story, coming to grips with his inner violent nature (or some shit). The character is more relatable to me and thus I prefer it.
The manga is nearing its end I suspect, since there's not a lot more to draw from with regards to the source material. One more major duel left and that's it. If only the author would speed the fuck up because long hiatuses make the story lose its vibe.

Even among manga Berserk doesn't have the best art. Inoue, Otomo, Asano, and Murata are all better than Miura.

The first Arcs in Berserk were just out of this world. I love most of the other comics you're all talking about in the thread, but Berserk was really special and it's buzzing me that now Berserk sounds like a well-drawn One Piece.

It seems unfair to call him lazy. When he fell ill, he used his time to draw a volume (Gigantomanchia ) because he couldn't work on Berserk.
My guess is that he was super-interested in Berserk but his interests changed as the years passed by. Or his editor put a gun to his head and he has to push Berserk as long as people want to read more.
I have the same issue with Yukito Kishiro. Battle Angel Alita was godlike and nowadays it's some weird DragonBall story with tournaments and super-moves.

I get that people are super wowed by the textures in bezerk. But i've never found myself impressed at little black lines so close together without the gesture and perspective to go with it. I admit that my comment on the story was worded poorly and not really needed for my point. I was more trying to say that i don't understand the mass appeal of the subject matter.
