Can anyone point me to some good resources on cross hatching? I wanna start with the basics of just hatching values on spheres and stuff, I don't quite get how to imply the roundness and form that just easily comes from normal shading. I LOVE the look of hatching though.

Some infographics or books would be dope, thanks

All you really gotta do is shade in the direction of the form.

how does rapoza do it?

A piece of paper is a textured surface. When you make a stroke in one direction, only one side of the texture gets covered. Go the other way, two sides. When you scribble or do the dreaded jerky "S" shading it distracts you and the viewer and can ruin the surface you're drawing on. When you fill too much of the surface or shade too hard it ruins the texture and can make dark portions look shiny.

Roundness, can be implied by curving strokes. Hardness or rigidity in fast straight or unnatural strokes. More importantly the core shadow, which you want to build up first as well as the darker areas of your drawing because that will determine/strengthen your expression of whether it's low mid or high key in lightness, and that will influence how dark or light to cross hatch the rest of the drawing . When you start gaining confidence you can start playing with pressure and vary the thickness throughout the stroke. Don't rely on your eraser, it will only take out the lightest of strokes. Don't blend unless the shading is fully filled in with little to no white in between the lines, it won't work otherwise. Practice drawing straight lines from different directions, you'll get the hang of it.

Step 1. draw lines one way
Step 2. draw lines across lines

retard.

It's not even close to as easy as everyone's making it out to be. I've been struggling with it for a long time.

Awesome art bro, keep it up

because it looks nice for the amount of tools required so they think they can achieve it easily, all you need is a pencil.

The thing I like about hatching is that its not hard to do... its just incredibly tedious and takes time if you want it to be quality.

thanks for all thisguys

Does someone have a good book about shading?. The only one I have is "Pen and ink techniques" by Frank Lohan ( vk DOT com SLASH doc366484900_437544580 ), but is not for begginers and I don't read a lot of learning art books so I don't know how good it may be in the subject matter.

TL;DR: /r/ing books about shading

I'm talking about hatching and similar shading of curse ( it also often associated with pen drawing btw ).

pls, I have been searching for a good one.

>I want to do drawings with pen
>Huh, you can't do values with pen like with other mediums

Thus need of hatching, simple as balls.
