Is sycra right about learning to draw from imagination instead of using reference? It seems very contrary to what I've read elsewhere.
if you want to follow the word of someone who's been drawing for 10 years yet still looks like he's in post-intermediate phase, go for it
I preffer to trust the great masters, academics and traditional artists, not even considering his quality of work
The best colors appear in nature, too. If you aim to be a painter it's pretty much impossible to be good just by your own imagination. Drawing without knowledge of color would be like writing music without knowing how to play it

I think there is validity to doing imagination work , especially for an exercise. I think becoming too reliant on ref you can let it dictate your work instead of you dictating the reference.
If you work from imagination it also really locks in information in your memory like anatomy, proportions ect you might otherwise forget. But I think in terms of making finished peices use all the ref you can to make your work as good as possible.

in the beginning the fastest way to improve is to learn your fundamentals. after that it seems just try a lot of things, get influenced by reality and different artists, draw a lot etc. just keep comparing your work to artists that inspire you

Well, it is valid reasining in a fashion. Stylization is meant to be appealing, and sycras style feels unbalanced and awkward a lot of times. The problem is that you can't point to any "objective" criteria to prove that point, but if most people agree it's ugly, and the artists intent is creating something that will be seen as beautiful, that means they have failed, right?
