Reading through How to Draw by Scott Robertson (using Traditional methods).

In one exercise here, he brings up a Perspective Grid. Do you actually create one? If so, how? He doesn't mentioned it before hand.

ideally you should be able to do it in your head, but if not you have to set up a horizon line with vanishing points. and then later erase it or digitally you can do it on another layer
>>
>>2521377
oh or you can do it all on the grid and then use tracing paper or something like that as well

Tools my friend. There are some wonderful perspective grid creators out there.

Most are stand-alone, and simply output a reference image for you to overlay in your work. Some can be overlaid on top of your desktop too.

Here's a list of the ones I personally know of:
- PerspectiveEditor, by KNDY (Japanese, free, outputs to image, has a really intuitive/easy-to-use UI):
http://www33.atwiki.jp/kndy/pages/94.html
I personally really like this one, so I translated it to English.

- Carapace, by EPIC Games (English, free, outputs to image):
http://epic.gm/carapace

- EasyRuler, by eikun (Japanese, free, overlays on top of existing software, has many many features):
http://www3.airnet.ne.jp/opa-opa/EasyRuler/
I REALLY want to translate this one, maybe some day I will. It appears to have all sorts of useful perspective rulers, 3D tools, etc:

Picture related, what I've been doing using PerspectiveEditor.

That's not quite what OP is asking about. Compositional planning grids are separate from perspective grids.
Both are guides, but it's composition vs perspective which are different topics.
For example, I can use one or more composition grids inside my perspective grid.

Thank you!

Yeah I hope more of these tools exist in the wild, it seems so rare to come across them.

Almost forgot, here are the key shortcuts in English:
M - Switch to the 'move' mode.
R - Switch to the 'rotate' mode.
L - Switch to the 'draw' mode.
Z - Undo.
Y - Redo.

a perspective grid will just be lines going from points on the horizon line. just draw as many lines as you need, no need to go crazy and fill the whole page. for the mirroring planes exercises, i don't bother with a grid, just the lines you'd need to construct the mirror plane and the tilted plane, (and draw them going all the way to the vanishing point )

Joking aside, if you'd like to bundle this up into an EXE for yourself I can post instructions. It was fun learning how to do this.
The only difference between the SWF and the EXE is that I removed the top menu bar from Flash Player, shrunk the file-size down a bit and added a pretty icon:
- Open the SWF in Flash Player standalone.
- Go "File" -> "Create Projector" (makes an EXE).
- Open the EXE in Resource Hacker. You'll find a "menu" category, where you can delete all of Flash Player's built-in garbage that isn't needed in the top bar.
- Use 010 Editor to replace the phrase "Adobe Flash Player" throughout the EXE with "PerspectiveEditor 0.3".
- Use an icon app of your choice (eg. IcoFX) to change the logo on KNDY's website into an icon, and change it in the EXE.
- Run the final EXE through BeRoEXEPacker, which shrinks it down by about 50%, to a comfy file-size.

If you're using Photoshop, the easiest way of making a perspective grid is just using the shape tool. Set it to star shape, 100 sides, and indent sides by 99%. Also make sure its set to pixels instead of path mode. It will make a point with lines coming out in all directions. Use it on each vanishing point and you've got a perspective grid.

bruh read the fucking book, chapter 4 is literally titled "Creating Grids"

I'm just gonna ask this here
Is there a way to make a perfect cube in 2 point perspective knowing just one line(height)?
I'm having trouble projecting this line Into space, towards any vanishing point (to make the base of the cube)

exe was deleted and I don't know what to do with an swf file.

I use this one: http://pixelstains.net/awesome-free-perspective-tool-for-photoshop/

I personally find his book to be much harder than it should be. I couldn't grasp many things in his book so I decided to figure them out myself and it was much easier. I think most artists are good with such things, but have difficulties following strict boring directions.

in the meantime i came up with another way, just drawing any cube(or rather prism) and then turning it around to 1 pp using the ellipse method, draw a diagonal from a corner to make a square and so a perfect cube and then turn this cube back to 2pp and you have basically carved a perfect cube from the beggining cube.
But your method is much better

It can be opened in your web browser, providing you have Flash installed.
I've also put it here (doesn't require download), just in case MediaFire fully poops itself.

Gah MediaFire, why am I not surprised. Lets try again:

Thank you very much for your work, this is a very intuitive and simple to use tool. I remember watching Feng Zhu talking about using 100s of grids he made like a decade ago but with this I don't have to do so much leg work.

No problem, glad to help. I use to hand-draw grids a lot so it's a nice change having tools like this to do it instead.

Want to explain yourself?
>>
>>2521365
just sayin, robertson teaching method is kinda fake: he gives some "basic" half-true rules of thumb, which later become useless because everything is done by eye.

also, nowadays there's no really need for all that, because 3d modelling tools are easy to use, 100% precise, and allow a MUCH faster and creative workflow. Blender is free, and great for modelling.
>>
>>2526777
did you ever actually go through the book? doing the exercises the 'exact' way teaches you what looks right and allows you to draw by eye way more accurately, because you should be able to visualise where the guidelines would be while you draw by eye after going through the book. it's pretty much what they teach at fzd school

>>Want to explain yourself.
Yes I'd be happy to.
I used a program called "BeRoEXEPacker" to shrink the file-size of the EXE from 10MB down to around 4MB.
This is free software you can download and try out yourself if you want. It's like Winrar, but specifically for EXE's.

This was a bad idea, as it turns out Malwarebytes are fighting a losing battle against people that hide viruses in shrunk EXE's.
The only way they were able to solve this, is to treat ALL shrunk EXE's as a virus no matter what, even if they aren't a virus.

So I really shouldn't have used BeRoEXEPacker. Thankfully, this is an easy problem to fix.

I posted some instructions earlier on how to convert the SWF to an EXE yourself.
Follow only the first two steps, and Malwarebytes should be a happy chap:
>>2523074
- Download Flash Player standalone from Adobe.
- Open the SWF in Flash Player, and then go "File" -> "Create Projector" (makes an EXE).

Alternatively, just use PerspectiveEditor directly in your browser, using the link I shared earlier:
http://jsrun.it/ent/PerspectiveEditor

Hope this clears things up. Thanks for pointing this problem out.
>>
>>2527084
Thanks for the clarification.
Makes sense why my ESET AV didn't pick it up even though Malwarebytes did.
Sorry if I came across as a bit passive aggressive in that post.

No problem, all in good fun.
