Is "muh style" a meme?
Is there a threshold where drawing a certain way, even if it looks like symbol drawing doesn't get called out because the person who drew it got good?
How do you tell the difference?

almost always, people who have a style utilizing 'symbols' that actually look good also know not to symbol draw. they can use their knowledge of how things actually look to make appealing symbols of those things
someone symbol drawing without any actual technique or acquired skill is usually very easy to pick out. it's a cliche, but you really do need to know the rules before you bend or even break them.

It might also be important to note that a beginner with weak construction can end up with stuff that still looks like symbols.
