>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Hacked together from imagination and multiple references, also wanted to try doing a dynamic pose. I feel like her figure is too stiff, wanted to give an impression of her 'falling' or as if she's mid-flight from a jump.

Little figure on the bottom left is the quick figure drawing I based this off, would appreciate any feedback on how to fix this (and how to make her face more expressive? I feel like I need to bring her eyebrows together more and make her snarl...)

In the process of drawing her second arm too

>>

>no ref

Stop this

If you want to practice properly, you should be doing studies from figure construction books, photos, casts, and models, and you should be taking the time to do them accurately and clean.

If you really need to draw something from imagination, use references to check the accuracy of everything in your drawing.

IMO If you can't even draw clean lines, you should be going through Drawabox and Keys to Drawing, not trying to draw figures from imagination, which is one of the most difficult things you can do in drawing.

Try turning the picture upside down and drawing it.
The trick is not to see parts of the image as an "eye" or a "nose," but as a "curve kind of like an S" or a "right triangle" or an "ellipse".

So, is gesture drawing the first step to figure drawing?

in this episode of things I didn't read, the sticky:

"Eyelashes do not go upwards: The most common piece of symbol drawing is found in the eyes. Often times, people put eyelashes directly up/down, however, it should be noted that eyelashes actually go outwards. They do not go towards the side (this is an illusion caused by having a round surface, so things in the distance have more opportunities to stick out and take space. Don’t believe me? Look at an eye in profile. All going the same direction, and it’s not upwards. All upward-ness is caused by the make-up mascara whores exaggerating their upwards tilt. Also, fucking clump your eyelash strands together you degenerate."

>>

>>
>>2502859
Finish the drawing. You have a faceless blob made of hairy lines with unnecessary construction lines. The proportions are way off. I really don't know what you are expecting people to tell you. I have a hunch that you should be drawing a lot more and not trying to tweak every little part of a sketch like that to perfection. You need to be making dozens of those things a day at least.

>>2502991
>>2502993
>>2502994
These seem like simplified contour drawings and not proper gesture drawings.

>>2503126
I've used most of the popular programs, and the thing to keep in mind is they are all very powerful compared to traditional tools. They are the Formula 1 racecars to your cheap Hondas sedans, and if you don't even know how to drive yet they present a lot of extra challenges you're better off without. Learning to draw traditionally lets you focus on what matters and lets you take a sketchbook around with you to draw from life, which is very helpful.

I use Clip Studio Paint and GIMP on Linux and I can switch between without feeling like I'm loosing anything. Almost all of the techniques that matter can be used in most programs. CSP goes on sale every now and then for $15, but it's worth the $50. Whatever you go with the limiting factor is almost always your own abilities.

>>2503164
Those lines are very hairy. The shading makes no sense at all. Squint at that and a ref in the same position and note where the darkest places on the ref are. Her bangs and lips are the only things that have any hint of depth. The pupil on her right eye isn't even in the center of the iris and I can't even tell what's going on with her eyelids.

>Squint at that and a ref in the same position

>The shading makes no sense
no shading besides the underside of hair which does make sense.

stop giving advice, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about and you didn't even bother to read the posts you replied to.
>>
>>2503200
>from imagination
Yes, I read that. What makes you think I didn't? It's still wrong, and a good way to fix that would be to use a ref as I suggested.
>no shading besides the underside of hair which does make sense
No, it doesn't. Even if you were going for an anime style that's not how you'd handle shading at all. That drawing is wrong on a lot of levels but that one fucks up the thumbnail the most. That poster asked about the eyes specifically and those aren't even drawn clearly enough to identify their component parts.

>except that they do focus on showing gesture, even if it's not executed that well
Those drawings don't show what I understand gesture to be, but I admit figure drawing isn't my forte. The third drawing in particular seems like forms thrown together without any cohesion. Maybe you see the action of the figure in them, but I don't. My understanding of this is from Proko and Vilppu, and they go out of their way to differentiate gesture from contour drawings.

Larger drawings can appear distorted if the corners on the far side are farther away from your eyes than the near side, and angling the drawing surface fixes that problem. It also makes using an overhand grip easier. I use a cheap sheet of MDF I cut to 24"x18" for newsprint and 18"x12" for a smaller drawing pad. I put those in my lap and lean them against my desk when I want an angled surface, but most of the time I just use cheap copy paper on a clipboard on a flat surface. It's really personal preference.

you want to curve the middle line of the face. usually it's drawn coming from the back, as if you were going around the sphere with your pencil in 3d space. also, the proportions on your facial features are a bit off. the bottom of the nose (where the flesh connects to the face physically, not just the lowest point graphically) is aligned with the bottom of the cut-away part on the side, the ellipse.

i would recommend drawing these from references of well done loomis heads if you can. try to follow the process as best you can but also note where you're going wrong from the reference. it's hard to just freehand them from the get go and have it look alright.

Draw your hands from life in different poses a couple times a day, not super detailed, take 5-10 minutes per sketch so you can understand the form. Then also per day, use the iterative drawing technique, look up Sycra on youtube, and draw about 20 of those.

TL;DR Draw hands a lot.

This reminds me of something my old illustration teacher used to lecture me about. He used to tell me NOT to draw a rough stick figure to sketch out the model, as if it were a normal illustration, because the point "was to train the eye to follow the contours" and restoring to construction techniques bypasses that training.

Anyone else hear that?

idk about that. That might be true if you're learning sight size technique, I.E. you'll be doing fine art shit and only work from live models/references, but if you wanna do stuff from imagination then you have to construct things.

QuickPoses is usable if you haven't heard of it. Definitely varying in quality but a figure is a figure but I don't know of any other place that has a good concise inventory of figures.
>>
Do professionals (like comic book artists or animation people) still use references?

Do they also always draw their characters naked first before they get to work?
>>
>>2504491
You'll be surprised at how many pros still use references for things. Imaginative drawing is one of the hardest things to do in art. Drawing a character with nothing on it helps set up a good foundation so things like clothing or armor do not defy how the figure is formed under it!
>>
>>2504174
For a first time portrait drawing this is incredibly good anon. Nice job tackling a difficult angle instead of a standard 3/4 view. Your placement of the features is pretty sound and so is your grasp on foreshortening. It still needs work (that ear is all kinds of fucked up) but keep at it man.

>>2504299
Impossible to make out expressions through all that terrible chicken scratching. You also seem to have a habit of skewing everything to the right. Try to focus on making the face symmetrical. Also draw from your shoulder and draw bigger!

Also, are you using construction to establish your heads? I'm guessing not since I see no rhythm lines and the placement of features are incorrect (ear is too low, eyes too wide, lack of volume in cranium etc.) I think it's time to hit up some Loomis.

These are 60 second poses btw
>>
>>2504960
You are drawing stick figures and not gestures. I know that there's "no rules, only tools" but to fully understand the meaning of poses means drawing how it feels, not how it looks. Following the flow of the head down the body to the bottom of the feet (and by extension, the arms).

I would suggest rewatching Proko's gestures and see how radically different yours as compared to how he explains them.

You have to learn how to do it before you can easily eyeball it

You shouldn't really be taking a ruler to anything and doing exact measurements unless you're doing something like technical design.

Just measure with your pencil and use visual techniques to judge accuracy. Look for negatice shapes, distances, use plumb lines, angles, etc.

Way too stiff. Work on gesture before focusing on contour/structure. Arms are also slightly too short
>>
>>2505182
>>2505227

Try forgetting the limbs, the hands, the feet, ignore them. Focus on finding the single, strongest line of motion, and do a few sets of just that. So a diver jumping off the diving board would have a single, arcing line. Once you're comfortable with that, and can see the line before you draw it, add another arc for a leg or arm that might branch off of that central motion.

Alternatively, have a read through the gesture portion of this:

How is drawing from the elbow even possible? The elbow only has one degree of freedom.

It wasn't it, but thank you. It looked really desolate with only one character. I liked it because of the focus of color that made it look really mad Max-esque but it looked like it was made before mad Max. The pose was something like this. It's a quick sketch of what I remember it looking

Use all of your arm and hand as necessary. Unless you want to damage your arm from wear.

any comments?

drawing from right to left because i'm left handed.

trying to draw the head in correct perspective and did some work on the planes but i got really frustrated that the side of the head wasn't right

right now I just draw a cross where the middle of the head is meant to be, drop a line to the bottom of the chin and then work from there. I find it better than starting with the cut off side of the ball as that's just guess work from my experience

you're not really symbol drawing. i get that you're doing it from a reference, and that's okay for a start, but really look at the picture you have. are her eyelashes little lines? no. they're tufts. you've got what it takes.
>>
>>2505948
Your linework is wonky so a lot of those faces look skewed.
The centre line should bisect the face entirely.
The face should be equally separated into thirds horizontally, you've only indicated the brow-line.
Your noses lack volume and look flat. Keep in mind the nose has 4 planes (2 sides, bridge and bottom) and is wedge shaped.
Your mouths are much to small. If you drop a plumb-line from the center of the eyes they should align with the sides of the mouth. I also have no idea what the lines connecting the nose and mouth are meant to represent. The philtrum perhaps? Whatever it is has no anatomical basis.
Eyes lack volume and look like symbols. Remember that the lids are fleshy and 3 dimensional, wrapping around the spherical shape of the eyeball and cornea.

Despite all this you draw the neck very well. It connects to the right places of the skull and has a convincing cylindrical shape.
>>
How would you go about drawing a figure drawing for something like this without it looking stiff?

There's no bends or anything, any attempts I make just come out looking like stick men
>>
>>2506000
A drawing of that pose is going to come out slightly stiff no matter what since the original pose is quite stiff.
I don't know what you mean by 'no bends' though. He's clearly bending his arms and legs. He isn't ramrod straight.

Let's say you are standing at the 20th floor of a 40 floor skyscraper and looking out of the window.

Ahead, there is an identical skyscraper. It is close.

How do you draw the entirety of the skyscraper you are looking at with three point perspective? Is it possible? Do you have to use 4 point for that?

Someone please elaborate with drawings please. My head is about to explode.

For the drawing the 8x lines exercise, how am I supposed to look ahead to the point I'm drawing to? The line goes left to right so my hand is in the way.

ik what thread to post this in

Guys I desperately need criticism.

This is my first post on this board because I didn't even know it even existed. I just bought a Wacom Intuos tablet (about 2 weeks ago) and my parents want me to show them what I have been drawing with it.

I need you guys to tell me if this stuff is even worth showing.

Pic related is my first painting which is a Bob Ross painting that I did as part of this awesome Krita tutorial.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaGRTLvEbVzybijtYZRy4EoGrx6Bq_xOG I had to scale it down 4MB.

I like how you chose to render your forms. The subtle outlines in a few areas work well to give the shape some definition while still letting it breathe.

The most glaring flaw I can see is the stiffness of some of the pose's elements, especially the right arm. There's a very subtle curve in your ref, while what you drew stands straight out. The left thigh suffers from the same problem. I tried to redline both to show what I mean.

Your ref's ribcage is also positioned lower than you drew it. If you look at it, the gesture line forms a curve that meets the right arm's curve in a V-shape roughly at the chin.

Also, not gonna address the face too much but the way you left a patch of unfilled white at the back of your neck, just under the head, makes it look like the neck is fused with the body. Separating that might be the start to figuring out the other issues with the head.

Hope this helps.
>>
>>2506516
If your roughs don't look good when cleaned up, it means there are flaws with your underlying anatomy. Simply practice more and it'll happen naturally after a while.

At the stage you're at, you shouldn't be concerned with having a final product that looks good, but with improving and getting more accurate final results.
>>
>>2506499
Dude, your parents are probably gonna be happy with you no matter what if you started drawing two weeks ago and managed to get any kind of results. You've obviously got a way to go like everyone else who's starting out, but this is a lot better than the first thing I drew after getting a tablet.

Are you seriously asking 4chan whether you should show your art to your parents? What do you want us to say?

Can spending too much time drawing from reference images instead of life mess with your understanding of 3D shapes?

I've been at this for a few months and my shit still feels flat.

>Are you seriously asking 4chan whether you should show your art to your parents?
I'm just really self-conscious about my art and I need some sort of validation before I show it anyone that I care about or is important to me.
>>
Anyone got any advice for getting a good likeness of someones face (for drawing celebrities) without just copying it exactly from a referance?
>>
notice the neck of my drawing is not that long or just too thick.
thanks for the feedback.
