Step 1: Grow up in the Swedish 80's and 90's, develop a love for abandoned machinery, vintage cars, dinosaurs and the Sega Genesis. Draw all the time. Learn SketchUp and Photoshop and carry a camera with you at all times and snap pictures of everything you find visually interesting.

Step 2: Reminisce your childhood adventures and wipe off that bitter sweet nostalgia tear from your cheek and use it as inspiration. Slap together a few interesting photos, make a few models in SketchUp to get the perspective right and use it as a base. Paint a loose sketch at first, then render it at 10k pixels wide.

Done!

Well, it's about ideas and what inspires you, if you don't have it then tough luck.

Notice that most of those are urban landscapes from which you can erase extraordinary components and still would be nice paintings by themselves. Artist probably went every day on walks in the evening or in the early morning and started to draw those cityscapes that he saw or re-imagined.

Then you plaster some sort of science-fiction and decay elements there. There's also in some of his work fascination with gaming and northern gaming scene, probably artist was/is a gamer himself.

If it comes to technique and composition, it seems to be (as often) juxtaposition of two opposites.

First work: left side is warm pallette and human silhouette, right side - cold greens on blue side and destroyed machine.

Second work: cozzy neighbourghood with added post-apocalypse on top of that. Girl: colourful clothes and black, cold mask. Warm pinkish sky when sun is about to rise vs black roofs of buildings and dark forest.

Third work: Rising sun over the neighbourhood, lone view of a drain vs. composition full of people in dark clothes and with gaming headgear on.

Fourth: Lone desert composition cluttered with lots of massive sf wrecks. Simple pick-up vs. sf marvel.

Etc. ad infinitum.

Really, it's more about ideas and good design than anything else. Reason why these pieces work is because there was thought put into it and narration they convey. See that third pic, it's clearly a metaphor of how many (young) people stay till dawn gaming. Also conflict between mundane (new day, familiar mostly-empty neighbourhood at dawn) vs extraordinary (out-of-this-world technology gathering lots of people like for some sort of superimportant event)

Really, your question shouldn't be "how do I paint like that" and it should be more "how do I think like an artist".

t. total n00b talking out of his ass that never draw anything but the bunch of ellipses and not-so-straight lines

do environment studies from films if you want to lock down unnatural environment lighting.

do photo/life studies to better understand the natural environment lighting. How clouds work, trees etc...

the rest is mostly about knowing how to draw things in perspective.

It's pretty much Simon's bio. I don't really see that much similar work at artstation though.
