Trying to design a character. I'm not a furry, but a friend had an idea based off of a fuck-around sketch of an evil cat, and now I can't stop thinking about it.

I actually like it, it's decent. The form seems a little off (even to me) but it gets it's point across.
Though to whoever put the text over it, shoulda put in the lower left corner instead, so that it doesn't cover the art.

I'm not great with anatomy myself, but there are a couple of things that I can fix, due to my obsession (on could call it a /fix/ation) with legs, the bad one really stands out.
I'm not great at complicated or unusual poses like Chun's here, so I'm only basing her right leg on her left. It looks like you suck at lower legs. Her left one is cropped out, most likely deliberately, and the right one was utterly ruined. I'd look at sinix's video on legs, he does them much better than your's truly, but I can show you the correct leg, methinks. Sorry if it's hard to read, I don't have great line fidelity/confidence on a tablet.

This isn't a fix. You made the perspective on the leg even more off. It needs to be lower and the redline leg has less accurate anatomy than the previous leg. You both keep making the leg look like it's bending forward when it should point either to the side or slightly back to match the other leg.

>>
>>2496110

Fine for what it is.

Anatomy is fucked up and so is the perspective but there is no real horizon line and the figures aren't human so w/e looks good move on to next piece.
>>
>>2496110
This looks amazing. I really like the subject matter, the level of detail is good, good contrast. I agree that the perspective was a bit confusing at first, which is caused primarily by the skirt draping behind the bed of flowers with no folds hinting interaction between the two. Hope that makes sense. Good shit, what else you got?

>>2496166
Ohh I see it now, thanks a lot anon. I kinda flew by the seat of my pants with these.
I'm not the best at perspective stuff, but I'm trying to get into making whole illustrations. How's this one..? I can already tell the perspective is broken a lot and the anatomy is probably wonky.
>>
>>2496180
I'm working on a redline/redraw right now. I really can't think of how to explain the issue with the torso in words but I'm hoping that showing you some of how I'd construct it will help.
>>
>>2496180
>>2496192
Actually I think this is done enough now. First I tried to redline it but there was too much to change. I couldn't fit her upper half into what was there making it longer, but I think the legs and hips might fit the original. Next I redrew it entirely and tried to leave some of the construction of the torso and hips particularly. If you check for the segments of the torso like the ribcage, the small waist area between the ribcage and hips/pelvis, and the whole pelvis/butt segment and they've all got space that may help you make sure the torso doesn't get bunched up the way it looks now. It's bent and foreshortened so you have to make certain indicators to suggest that all of that length is still there but folding. For the legs you can make a perspective grid to line them up but whatever you do, draw the lines all the way through the figure then erase or draw over for the contours, don't try to guess at where it should connect. Anyway, I hope that helps some.

I'm an in-house graphic designer and digital artist, I work in the comic book industry. This portrait is part of a bigger project, an "action figure" variant comic book cover. Here is one i've completed already.

By saying "who would pay you for this?" are you trying to say you don't think it's up to par? I'm pretty confident that it will look fantastic once I finish shading and blend. :)

I'm not familiar with the term pillowshading, but usually for my digital stuff I paint with 100% opacity and blend. The first image I posted is unblended, since it is unfinished.

Tablet sucksssss. Work is about to get a new one. I started here as just a graphic designer, so it fit my needs but i've outgrown it now that i'm working on more serious art. I spent my high school years building up a graphic design portfolio. I started working here on small projects and there was another graphic designer for the big stuff. Well, he got fired and now i'm at where i'm at. Comic covers are only part of the job, I also design whatever is needed for our sites. It's a good gig.

I'm actually bothering to comment cause im getting sick of this ego-whore rhetoric I see all the time.

there are some realizations that you really need to make if you want a dream art job, you're not a competent artist or an industry professional at all. Not sure how you got work (regardless of whether you're telling the truth or lying). There's nothing overly appealing about your work nor technically impressive.

Its all samey and bland. The fundamentals of form, lighting, color, rendering, and so on need a lot of work. I suggest you stop ego whoring and get to work on those things. I know of a hundred artists that are unemployed right now that could send you into a mid life crisis.

Throw your ego out the window and get better.

I like the brush you've selected. I feel like you're on the right track with that even though I don't find the figure itself very interesting. (Try flipping your canvas, he's kind of leaning and things aren't very symmetrical.) Try looking up anatomy tutorials for different body shapes as well.

However, I would suggest doing value studies because your painting doesn't have much value to it outside of the background.
>>
>>2496872
Like this a-lot.
>>
>>2497068
Wow, I didn't even notice the lean until you pointed it out. Fuck. Now I can't look at it without thinking he's going to fall over.

Anatomy is my bane, though the thing I'm drawing isn't really a human, so it's not a good model to test that on.

Is the problem that there isn't enough contrast? I'll be honest, I've never really studied color theory or values, so there are a lot of flaws (that I'm unaware of) in my technique.
>I like the brush you've selected

Holy shit this is absolutely amazing! Blog?

It looks great in digital! I like square or middle flat (Sai), anything other than a circle makes it feel more alive, imo.

Your drawing is a bit humanoid, human anatomy does play a part even if the masses wouldn't exactly call it human.

Yes, contrast is a really big deal for the type of style you're painting in. Unless you want your paintings to be absolutely flat with very little to translate to the viewer (Because you have no lineart.), I would suggest you grab a charcoal or ebony pencil to start working on values!
>>
>>2497088
I abandoned the pencil/pen after picking up the stylus, but I'll definitely work on adding more contrast in the future now.

Nice theme.

I see what you mean by the anataomy being a little off, but it's hardly noticeable. The only issues I see in that department are the right leg of the female, which is pretty well avoided by the eye movement of the staff, and the guy's legs.

Like I said though, these aren't really taking away from the piece. The level of detail is impressive and detracts from any minor error.

In this way the first piece you posted is more impressive because it's so bare, which would flesh out any mistake, whereas this one distracts from mistakes with a lot of eye movement.

Super cool. Sorry for the late response

Lol sure.

Color balance is on point, although the steeple is a little dark. I wouldn't try to fix it by darkening any other part though.

The perspective on the circular windows is a little off. The top one looks a little sharp (like a football). You nailed the lower windows.

Nice touch with the extended lawn for the tombstone.

Tasteful use of the paper's texture.

I really like this, it looks like questionable ground beef. Surprise, instead of having hamburger helper, the hamburgers having you.

I love that arm but my mind kinda wonders where it's coming from. It appears to be sticking out from between two of the mouths.

What did you use to make the saliva?
>>
>>2498547
Jesus christ anon you just made my fuckin day. I was thinking the reason the arm is there its more of a creature that never really takes shape but tries different forms, kind of like The Thing if it couldn't make up its mind. And I used just a nice white Gelly Roll pen.
>>
>>2498554
Ahh, I see. Perhaps it was because of the saliva, but my first thought was that the arm might be part of a meal for the creature. The saliva is grade A, by the way.

The way you are rendering is just way off. Take above the breasts and the bra part of her suit: you have all these paint strokes with different values describing what should be a smooth form transitions. You're using way too many strokes and the end result looks blotchy and diseased. Try rendering some simple spheres correctly and compare that to what you're trying to do.

You're trying to render with a tiny low opacity brush and that's such a hard way to do that. Try lassoing out just one simple form, like the part of her suit cupping her right breast, filling in one flat color, and using a huge (as large as the form you're filling in or larger), soft brush with pressure set to opacity (and, depending on your program, set it so a stroke that passes over itself multiple times won't add more paint unless you press harder) When you lasso out an area like that you can make smooth gradients with massive strokes without fear of fucking up the surrounding painting.

Hope that helps. Read or Die is amazing.
>>
>>2498592
Just reread that and realized how incomplete my advice was. Watch this http://www.ctrlpaint.com/dp101-4/ starting at 4:08 . He makes big, smooth, sexy shapes and then erases them into the correct shape. Lassoing the shape beforehand accomplishes the same thing if you already know what the shape should be. Sections 8 through 12 in his video library explain everything you'd want to know and they're free.
>>
>>2498568
Thanks man, I had a suggestion from a friend to add more saliva around the teeth and gums but I think that might be adding to much white ink.

time on the pose? looks like you were kind of at the end of what you were capable of with this pose. try to focus less on constructed gesture and more on value and measurements in your head. just too stylized. but that might be lack of experience. really try to rein it in and just draw what you see.

it'll be harder to do longer poses if you stylize like this because you'll be aiming for simplicity and gesture every time and won't want to render things fully because it'll break the stylization.

this looks too finished and comfortable. you should find a more difficult way to draw things. something you struggle with.

About an hour with 10 minute breaks scattered in there somewhere. I guess tou are right. Ive been doing quick gestures like on the page of the first image I posted for months now and rarely make it to the longer sessions like I did on saturday. I'm not trying to be comfortable, that's hust the only way I understand how to draw right now since I can get those sorts of marks down really fast I guess.

I'm getting pretty good at drawing in this way I suppose, so do you have an example of anotger way of rendering poses out? Just assume that the three images I posted are the only 3 ways I know atm.

Could you recommend any exercises you can recommend and things to keep an eye out for next time? And what might be the priorities to keep on figures when trying not to be overly complicated then? Finally, what's brute force?

I know I sound like I'm asking to be spoonfed but I'm frustrated from seeing a lack of progress.
>>
>>2499502
id recommend examining van gogh's early work. his later work was much more gestural but his early stuff was a lot more measured, and more importantly finished, compared to the work that he grew into. There's a lot of long studies of figures sewing, and landscapes that are rendered down to the last line possible.

think of it like you do that work so you can get to the work the stuff you posted wants to be. that doesn't necessarily mean figure drawings done realistically since figures should really be painted in one session but i'd recommend landscapes. go find an area you like and spend as much time on a drawing there as you can possibly muster.

right now i see a lot of time spent on the outline, but not the values or the form of what you are drawing. there's a lot of implied form and a few hatch marks here and there, but really try to render every bit of what you are drawing. if there's a color or value you are translating onto the paper you have a pencil for it. unless it's a light source or a reflection there shouldn't be any white.

i'll just give this image as an example of the kind of work you should aspire to that van gogh did. don't get caught up in what he did the day before he died, try to emulate what he was doing at the start of his career.

that being said try to be fluid in your studies. do a lot of them, and try different things but always come back to your version of realism and what you are comfortable with. some days you might go out to draw a landscape and just do composition studies or individual trees or rocks, some days you might feel up to doing a whole drawing on bigger paper.
>>
>>2499523
the reason im harping on landscape studies is that you don't have a model to draw everyday. you'll find as you do it more that you really want to be doing drawings as much as you can, and even if you want to be a great portrait or figurative artist it's just not feasible when you are starting out. it's better to work from nature because if you have the eye for it you can find compositions anywhere that are beautiful the same way a beautiful nude model would be. and you can spend as much time on them as you'd like. it's the same with still lifes if you find enough things you'd like to paint. it's an important thing to have in your back pocket when people are busy or you are tired of the models at your figure drawing sessions. still do it as much as you can, but having a love of nature and knowing what to look for in it to make great paintings is very important.

personally i've been supplementing my lack of models by drawing my hands all the time, but i'm getting tired of that. it's a useful exercise to do a little bit everyday but I'm finding myself drawn outdoors more and more as the weather gets warmer and i still have no regular models to draw.
>>
>>2499523
Good advise. I'll definitely give his older work a look and try to emulate it. Drawing things I'm no good at have gotten me this far so now's as good a time as any to switch techniques again before I start a new sketchbook. Thanks anon.
>>
>>2499524
Yeah I know what you mean. I haven't drawn a landscape in about 4 years so it will be interesting to say the least. But if I want to be a board artist I need to be Able to do that too I suppose. I'll go to the park on sunday and give it a go.

Hi IC, I'm in the middle of something important here and would be very grateful if you gave your opinion.

Let's start from the beginning - More or less one year and a half ago I started drawing and decided it would be my career choice, so I started reading some Loomis books and focusing primarily on Anatomy, skipped many steps on what concerns the general learning curve of drawing; Did one artistic drawing course with an famous DC/Marvel artist that opened a studio nearby and it was mostly focused on anatomy/textures/shading/a bit on perspective but didn't cover some fundamental stuff either.

So now, one month or so ago I started feeling unhappy about my anatomy/drawing ambients and shit from observation and decided to review the basics from scratch,

So, I decided that for the next three months I'd focus on drawing only from observation on my studies. On the present time I'm reading Bert Dodoson's "Keys to Drawing" that covers most of the basics from what I heard about it.

I would like your opinion about what I decided to do, more books about drawing from observation(preferably that can be found on line to download) and who knows what else,

Thanks for the attention

These were the last ones I did, spent 10 mins on each one(didn't do any kind of sketch/measuring on the faces, just traced the lines my eyes were showing)

If you want a better assessment post something that isn't just a 'study' or 'practice', something that you took your time on. Anyone's practice can look like total shit but if it's something you drew more seriously then we know all the mistakes that are still there were overlooked.

These are garbage and don't reveal anything concrete about your skill besides how little care about your practice. And you were trying to 'achieve' that second picture as an aesthetic while practicing the first pic or that's just your overall goal? Either way everything about that is completely retarded.

Use less lines and draw from your shoulder.
For priorities, I mean, its probably best to ask yourself what you're tying to achieve.
A high frequency style (meaning many marks/fast variation and repetition in elements) will tend to make a higher energy and busier picture. And the inverse tends to hold for low frequency styles.
Brute force is a perhaps oblique reference to a problem solving method- in this instance, the problem is drawing well, and your solution is to make as many marks as are needed for accuracy, Learn to edit and modify- just because a picture shows certain detail doesn't mean it looks better, or even more realistic, that way. You placed things in the right place, but its ugly and shows low confidence.
I'd recommend drawing as large as possible on newsprint or butcher paper with like a fucking crayon or some other shit you can't erase.

Everything is still really dark. You also are treating it like it's made of clay. Everything has the exact same local value and everything is the same material (matte). How can you render it to make it feel like the armor is a large plate of polished metal, the skin is a semi transparent organic thing, the cloth is a thick cotton, the chainmail is slightly old and worn, his hair is greasy, his boots are leather etc. Rather than treat everything the same which looks bland and dull, treat the materials differently. How does a white cloth look different from a black cloth? How does the blade of his sword look different from both of those cloths?

I would recommend getting some reference to help you, and then start making things more specific and bringing in more variety.

Lay off the soft brush for a bit. Everything has a mushy appearance. Think more of the planar structure of things and paint it in cleanly rather than using the same soft brush everywhere. Be careful too of muddy colour, you have some greens and greys that look pretty unnatural for skintones in there.

Might be good to zoom out and work at a smaller size, you will probably see some errors in colours and value, as well as drawing errors (like how her hear and neck sit on the ribcage, and how the boobs are placed on it too.

Overly simplified coloring on daily sketches.

Forced myself to draw daily. been about 2 weeks or so.
Total practice time is about the same. but what I found is that, doing it everyday is way better than not doing it daily.

yeah, it was just a rough block-in for now, I'm going to add more variation later, place some lighter values, get some highlights and work more on differentiating the materials from one another. It's still in a very WIP state..

Pretty good job mate! Was this done at home or are you attending an atelier somewhere? How long did it take? This is an advanced plate, so I assume you have done several before this?

On a quick glance it seems quite accurate. The only things that jumped out at me were the shape of the nostril is a bit off (yours is too much a sharp triangle shape) and the shape and feel of the laugh line crease projecting off the nose is wrong as well. But those are very minor nitpicks. Overall I think you captured things very accurately. The head as a whole feels a bit narrower in yours though. I'm not sure if it's the face your value range isn't as deep or if it is an actual drawing error, like I think maybe the neck on your might be a few millimeters too thick on the right, which would make the head appear thinner. Or maybe that's just lens distortion making the original in the photo look a bit skewed.

I always get value wrong when I work with color. I'll try to get around that next time.
>>
>>2501977
You can keep a layer filled with black with the mode set to Saturation, then keep it on top of your painting. Toggle it on and off to view the greyscale version of it to do a quick value check. Don't rely on it too much, but use it for a quick check now and then if you aren't certain of something.
>>
>>2501980
Thanks for the tip.
I've also switched over to CMYK color picking so I can change chroma and value independently.

Not bad. You're moving into rendering too soon, though. If you do that, look forward to a slogfest of trying to design at the same time as you render. Huge time waster. Nail down the drawing first if you don't want to spend a month on every character painting.

No reference.
Character is Noa from Soccer Spirits.
Drawn using Autodesk Sketchbook, Xperia C c2305.
Applied what I have learned from Loomis' fun with pencil.
I am not sure where should I head forward from here.
Thanks, /ic/.

uncanny valley, somewhere where caricature should be, maybe make heavier lines.

this kinda of work is good and bad. reasons. for what it is, its nice.
reason why bad. it is obvious that you are heavily relying on refs to draw your figures and in doing so the perspective is shit.

same reasons as above. the proportions are retarded. the line width and overall AESTHETIC is nice.

patience, you are rushing your way through areas such as the hair. yes, blocking in hair in solid shapes is good, but dont rush it, mark making should be uniform

the strokes in the background are far more pleasing that that of the focal point...
