Good or bad, it takes balls to make a comic without crumbling under your own self doubt and loathing. I'm not craving becoming a comic artist but I've tried a bit ago with a story I though was somewhat solid. Everything from drawing the backgrounds to proper framing fucked me good. mind you, that was before I had resources like this readily available.
I guess what I'm saying is that it takes more than pure draftsmanship and narrative power to make a comic. A certain power of determination to create that over rides the hate you hear in your head. Its really honorable in a sense, even if the art isn't that good

One of my friends was complaining on DA about not getting good constructive critiques, so I gave him one. Told him to study more anatomy, recommended books, told him to learn lighting instead of placing it randomly, and to not blur everything.

How so? The writing is so bad right from the start it wastes your time with a whole saga on the youth of the "first" Jojo, with the most shallow characters and ridiculous plot. Only to forget everything and start again with a fast forward.
For a whole gigantic arc the mangaka doesn't know where he is going with this story, and so we get to see Dio doing some shit to ruin Jojo's life just because he is a dick, and Jojo's father taking Dio's side every time for no reason, also because he is a dick... Then their personalities change as the author has different ideas for the story, every other supporting character yell what the author wants us to feel at determinate moments, in a desperate attempt to telegraph the emotions his writing isn't able to convey. Like when he fast forwards and Dio and Jojo are supposed to be the best of friends, and every character yells about their friendship, because the writer wanted to set up the betrayal of Dio poisoning Jojo's father. Also Jojo's father changed his personality and now he is the best person ever, he is so good he is almost Jesus in the eyes of the supporting cast, who keep yelling about how good a person he is, because we are supposed to feel bad for his death.
This writer can't set up his stories 2 chapters ahead, he can't write a character that isn't 1 dimentional, he can't write a dialog that doesn't sound retarded.
His dialogs sound like the poses of his characters look.

The author, (and this is a common flaw in manga) has to narrate every action scene with balloons, because he isn't confident that his drawings are clear enough for people to understand. The first scene of this shitty manga is some guy putting on Dio's mask, the tentacles perfurate his head, and we need a balloon to tell us that "AMAZING HE IS STILL ALIVE EVEN THOUGH HIS HEAD WAS PERFURATED WITH SPIKES!!".
So not only he has to telegraph his writing, he has to telegraph what he means with the drawings.
That's what I could retain from what I read. I am sure I am missing worst stuff, but to me this was the highlight on a terrible run for me. I don't know how people can read past this first saga, as it's more than 500 pages of filler, bad writing and bad drawings, and I could spend hours expanding on how bad is Jojo, but let's not do that.

There is one thing I cited there that is one of the reasons people love it, the so bad it's good poses, the other thing people love is the dbz fights later on. It's not that the otaku like the bad writing though, it's just that they are so accustomed to it they are impermeable.
What kept me going for so long were the drawings, but Jojo is so bad that I had to drop even before the supposedly interesting fights start.

Don't worry, (I know that saying this is basically semantic satiation at this point but) it gets a lot, A LOT better through the series.
I think people can pinpoint the exact moment or the good thing that makes jojo so good, but you don't see that stuff until... part 2 (?, it starts forming its identity there but still doesn't fell quite like the rest of the series. Is more like a hybrid). Just like the first 10 minutes of up people can easily point out what was so good, and those things are the punchlines/payoff/deliver/comeback/callback/whatever you call something with a set-up and a pay-off through the series, where people use their powers in a neat way (pic related). Part 1 and most of 2 lacks that. Part 3 shapes itself into jojo, rather than a 80s shounen tribute. Araki himself has said that he makes the parts somewhat independent of their previous continuity, so I'm conffident that you can pick any part and enjoy it by itself (usually people only recommend part 2, 3, 4 and 7 tho).
But excluding the pay-off, how is the storytelling itself?. Well, you were bothered by an aspect of the manga that I never noticed so I'm not sure how much you'll like it, but myself, I liked it a lot more than part 1. If you want a demo: mangafox.me/manga/under_execution_under_jailbreak/ (it has pay-offs but are kind of weak. No josuke riding motorcycle or Joseph protecting his body of Dio, but this is what the story-telling is part 3 and on.)

This desu. There's a lot of webtoons with meh art but the amount of work these guys put in is insane. Even if you're total crap, if you can keep your comic going long enough to gain a big following, that's an achievement in itself. Some of these guys pump out 150+ colored panels in under a week on a regular basis and have been doing so for a few years now.
My biggest issue with comics is that many of those who want to make one, never go out of their way to read something that isn't marvel or a manga and generally stick to common tropes from those.

I absolutely agree with this and witness it all the time. It's really quite awful when you know people who have this """graphic novel idea""" or worse, have already started a webcomic, and when you try to discuss comics with them they have no technical knowledge. Those also tend to brag about how they're "doing something really different", something "new", but to them that just means having super special OCs. You won't see those people experimenting with the medium.
I think many people who choose to do comics at that level don't really like comics. They have a story to tell and they want fancy images or don't have what it takes to write prose, so they figure they might as well do a comic. I've known many people who seem to think using both writing and visuals is an excuse to be mediocre at both.
