Do you know what Sazae-san is? If not, I recommend you google it, as it is the longest running anime with the most episodes. It is also drawn today the same as it was in the 90s, not even just using technology to immitate a look but using mostly the same technology they did in the 90s.
No one watches Sazae-san for the animation either, but you know what, there are such things as dedication to craft and respect for a work, which is something modern Simpsons utterly lacks. And the animation isn't the only thing about the Simpsons that's gotten shittier over time either, it is merely a symptom of the problem

Most people think "its cheaper and easier to make it equivalent quality in digital form" but then creators often think "we can save even more money by pumping out more episodes easily using digital animation". The only shows I know that have increased animation quality are adult swim shows that were either claymation or anime style.
I'm pissed about Gumball, which was eye candy for a televised cartoon. However, the S1 animation company (Boulder Media) only completed 36 out of 40 episodes by the deadline so they dumped them and nerfed the animation budget for the next seasons. Its gotten better recently but still kinda sloppy.

Not really. A cartoon like the Simpsons is a thousand times more simplified than any anime, while having a hundred times their budget. The faces are literally just easy to draw symbols and their bodies are very broad and simplified shapes. Not even remotely comparable to your average anime, where the figures tend to be fairly realistic and only the facial expressions get simplified.

As sad as this makes me, I can forgive shoddier animation for the introduction since they likely just wanted to update the look without devoting a big budget to a small part of the entire intro (since the couch gags seem to get much better animation suddenly, and subsequently the series itsself isn't as stiff as the new openings).
But maybe I'm oblivious so if anyone has any kind of comparison clips from the episodes themselves that'd be interesting to see.

I kind of agree some parts of the old one are over animated. At some point if one action takes too long to look at, the viewer will lose interest and it stops being fluid and just becomes distracting instead. The hairflip in this scene is the most perfect example of that. I still prefer the older one though because at least they tried and cared and had love for it.

I Agree with other anon though, he is pretty one dimensional but it's because he focuses on story more than the actual art which isn't something I personally like in animation. He likes to do unsettling work but it's all very one-note and could come from literally any of his animations.
I know the one that's like a small movie (it's on netflix right now, forget the name) is pretty critically acclaimed but the super expositional voice over the 2 year old artwork kind of pissed me off a lot.
I like his original works because they were the first to gain nortoriety but seeing his work now makes me think he's kind of like any fine art student hack (you know the kinds, the ones who literally can't paint, draw, sculpt, etc but they love the smell of their own farts so much that they manage to talk people into thinking their simple ass child art has some kind of meaning.
I loathe these kinds of people more than anything else because it's the reason my family kind of sighed when I said I wanted to go to art school until they found out I wanted to make a comic book or be an animator. I don't need this fucker changing peoples' opinion of animation too.
I don't care what anyone says, if you can't draw and you're an animator, I hate you and think you're garbage.
