What do we draw?
>Whatever you want. At this point there's no required topic so draw your heart out. Make sure you submit at least a half hour of work or you may get a low effort warning.
What's a low effort warning?
>The goal is to get people to draw every day by turning it into a competition. The low effort warning system is to prevent people from posting last minute, quick sketches when they're feeling lazy. If you receive a warning and it happens again within a month you'll be eliminated.
>This rule has been the cause of a lot of concern amongst newer artists so let me reiterate: this system is to police low effort content and has nothing to do with the quality of the work. New artists are more than welcome.
What happens if I'm eliminated?
>A new Last Artist Standing challenge starts every week. If you get eliminated then get it together and rejoin next week.
How can there be a new Last Artist Standing challenge every week?
>This is a way to let new artists join in and to allow re-entry for the eliminated. Every week a new challenge is started. If you joined on week 1 and make it to week 2 then your daily submission counts for both the first and second Last Artist Standing. If you get eliminated then you're eliminated from both challenges and you'll be able to rejoin next week.
Will I have an advantage if I join later in the week?
>The winner of a Last Artist Standing will be the artist with the longest streak. If you join on day 1 and last until day 85 then you'll have a streak of 85. If there's only one person left in the challenge when you're eliminated but they joined on Day 7 then they'll need to continue on for another week. If they're eliminated before then, you win.

How many of you guys think that "making it" (IE. living off your art) is even possible? The more I learn about the industry the more I realize that the vast majority of working artists make peanuts and that most of them have to work multiple jobs. Could have a better lighting. The darks arent dark enough and kibna blend in with the midtones. Sometimes you have to deviate from the reference to gain better aesthetics.
The hair looks weird as you have drawn pretty much all the strands. You can smallen your workload and make it look better if you only draw strands in the light area like as a highlight. Almost like not even drawing the strands just darkening the area around them so it looks like hairhiglights.

Communication design is what I'm studying right now as a cover for gitting gud, so I imagine I have that to fall back on if I'm so bad I can't even get some good commission work by the time I graduate. While /gd/ stuff is kind of intuitive to me, I'm not very interested in it, though a friend has a spot for me in his company's art department or whatever the hell if it comes to that. Ultimately, I can't afford to let that happen at any rate because I wouldn't have anymore time to focus on really getting better, so it's really make it now or never

I'm friends with a few professional artists so I know it is possible to live off your art. It's hard to be certain about my own future though. I always wanted to do comics and that's all I ever planned for and that turned out to be the stupidest thing I could've done. The comic industry is flooded with people who want work and traditional comics are are in a rough transitional period so there isn't much work to go around. Now I'm working towards getting some kind of illustration job and getting into video game art but every day I have to fight back thoughts that I'll never be good enough to land a job like that. I'm aiming to make a portfolio I can send to Blizzard without getting laughed at but I'd be lying if I said I was confident I can do it. I have no idea what else I'll try if I can't, probably the freelance/patreon route.

This is exactly me. When I was a kid I always dreamed of being a cartoonist or a comic book artist but the more I learn about it the less I want to do it. I don't think I would even mind the crazy hours you have to put in if comic artists were paid enough to sustain themselves. It's almost impossible to get in and once you do get in, you make peanuts unless you're lucky enough to make a name for yourself. And if you go down the creator owned route then you make close to nothing. I think Greg Capullo said in an interview that all aspiring comic book artists should try to be commercial artists and look for work everywhere because comic books are so hard to get into/pay so little.

What I really want to do is comics but it's not happening. I'd have to do some form of self publishing or crowd funding at this point. I also can't really do the side job thing because of some other situations I have going on but after trying unsuccessfully for 2 years to get a non art job I said fuck it and decided to go all in. Yeah, I saw that too, that's why I decided to branch out. The ones who support themselves on it mostly all do comics, ironically. A few are at DC, my mentor does stuff off and on for DC and Marvel. It's hard even for them to keep it steady but they all have a rap sheet that keeps demand up. They've gotten me gigs which is how I've kept going, but even with their help I haven't been able to get comic work. But like Capullo said it's not very sustainable anyway, best to find greener pastures.

Sure making it is possible, it's just about whether you "make it" into the right kind of position where you'd actually be happy and preferably not living off peanuts too.
I worked a full time online job for the past couple of years while trying to art at the same time and found that it's just not possible. Might be just me but I never had the energy or drive to do anything other than just grinding out daily work for the job and then sleeping. Saved up and moved back home for now though, so it's much cheaper than renting a flat in a city and I have more time to work on art all day like a true NEETmode god.
As for what art work I want to do, I'm pretty clear on just wanting to paint. Illustration is main target but I'd also be happy to do storyboards, paintings for individual people rather than companies, and possibly advertising as long as it was still for painterly stuff. I just want to be paid to paint family, and get slowly closer to being good like Leyendecker etc.
