I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm find I appreciate the paintings more after I study them at least. Anyways feel free to post some master studies or paintings you want to study.

I thought you were supposed to mimic the masters to learn their techniques, not do a half assed try and butcher the source material.
>>
>>2474832
HE IS TRYING.
I have never tried to copy master works, I copied a bunch of porn when I was younger but that shit's no good.

Sketch people outside, that are just walking by and stuff. You'll learn so much more. There is merit in studying the old masters, but copying does not teach you everything.

>>2474832
I'm sure that's what he trying to do, bruh

These are good, so I genuinely hope you have some talent to back up your shit-throwing senpai

Nice. I always love to see developing artists get shit on for sharing their practice.
>>
>>2474832
Depends what you want to learn from the study. Many artists do masterstudies to learn their use of color or value grouping or composition and lighting, not their brushwork and superficial technique. Nathan Fowkes for example did dozens of tiny color studies of James Reynolds and Edgar Payne landscapes, not trying to mimick their technique, but to internalize their use of color and light.
>>
>>2474792
these are really good op
>>
keep it up op these are nice to look at. let's all post our master studies guys
>>
>>2474832
THIS. Copying individual parts of a painting sloppily teaches you nothing. Either do it well entirely to teach fine technique, or take it apart and look at what makes it good. This "study" is mindless and does nothing.
>>
>>2476494
You're not to simply copy the piece perfectly inch for inch and be a master for doing so.

Master studies are a practice intended to imbue the student with an understanding of more subtle aspects of a piece like composition, sense of light, color, etc. Its not necessarily intended for copies or perfect forgeries.

Having said that this is some beautiful work OP Especially Study2. I feel like you achieved a sense temperature truer to the original than the other two

are we looking at the same images?

op I have two words for you. EDGE. CONTROL.

Oh hey I literally just finished touching mine up before submitting it for class. Mine is still off by a lot but I definitely couldn't have done this at the beginning of the term so I'm still happy with it as an achievement of my own growth, even if I still have a long way to go.

Also before anyone tells me the face is off, let it be known I'm still learning, and this was her face before crit, so I think I have the right to be happy I did get to improve it, even though I know there's a lot of mistakes still that i'm having trouble fixing.

It's already due though so I'm not gonna go back and work on it for awhile.

she's got a nice five head

When you stare at something for over 8 hours you tend to not notice dumbass mistakes like that haha. Too late to fix it for class now tho.

You made her black.

I fail to see how copying someone else's work is going to improve your skills
>>
>>2479390
anything can improve your skills as long as you're drawing. tracing lines can improve your skills. sunnttt
>>
>>2479390
understanding the approach of artists you admire can help you incorporate elements of their work which you like into your own. i hope you now understand how studies can be beneficial to your learning

As this anon said, for us the study purpose was to teach us the techniques of another artist so we could apply it to a still life.

It also was to teach us grid and enlargement (which are techniques many artists use with their own work. I know a lot of painters use it)

Here's my still life based off the techniques in my crappy master copy
>>2479071
I think my still life was a lot more successful than the master copy in part of the fact that I wasn't copying another artist's work and was applying the techniques I was trying to learn by doing said copy.

>>2479239
How she look black? Not being defensive, just genuinely curious so I can recognize it and know what part needs to be worked on. Is it her nose? Her nose gave me a lot of trouble for some reason
>>
>>2479390
I want to add that you seem to be under the impression master copies/studies are done for recognition of reproducing a piece of art work. Anyone who does this to sell their copies is a scumbag.
>>
>>2479390
If you fail to understand something as simple and essential to artistic improvement as master studies, then you are never going to make it and you might as well quit art right now.
>>
>>2479390
Yeah, it's not like that was part of traditional art tutoring for hundreds of years.
Lucky for anon, he's got nothing to learn from past masters.
>>
>>2474832
His method should at least teach him general value, colors, and composition if he's thoughtful about it.
>>
>>2479749
>2479749
Honestly aside from the faces I don't think it's that bad. I think they stopped working on it too soon though.

Who is study 1?
>>

Kill yourself.
>>
>>2479709
>>2479730
I'm sorry I learn through observation and deep understanding of the techniques used rather than having to try it myself to do the exact same painting/drawing/whatever. Nice academic thinking tho.
>>
>>2481339
That's what master studies are used for, observation and gaining an understanding of the techniques used. Are you fucking retarded or something? How the fuck do you think you can gain a deep understanding of something without actually trying to draw it yourself? Just by staring at it long enough? If that were the case, everyone would be a master.
