Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, There is a question thread for that.

Visit the usual "Art book Thread" to find your desired books.

Do not forget to PLEASE RESIZE and crop your images before uploading them. 1kpx is fine.
Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," Read the f*cking sticky, it's there for a reason: >>1579290 (Cross-thread) (Cross-thread) → →
There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at https://www.reddit.com/comments/46sb9k/

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

You're still suffering from that crippling depression the entire time but now you have not only your bitchy girlfriend that doesn't work giving you shit for having to work extra hours but your dick boss wants to see what it would look like if the character had a "more blue" hat and tells you to come in on saturday. So you just blindly stare at a screen and draw to the point where you realize when you get home that bitch is going to complain you have to work to pay the bills and you'll pray for a quick death from a stray bus.

Looking for some information of hatching lines if anyone has a page or something.
>>
>>2469925
Ed plz go.
>>
>>2469508

Just wiggle around on the carpet for a while before practice
>>
>>2469925

There really isn't a lot to it, you just place lines next to each other. You just have to practice doing it, and study how other artists use it.

You can make the lines wrap around the form to convey tone. You can use hatching to to show a gradual change in tone creating a roundness, or a more sudden change showing a harder edge.

The biggest problem beginners have with hatching is that the lines need to be entirely clean and consistent. If there's any wobbling or spacing inconsistency the illusion is broken and what should appear as a subtle gradation to the viewer will just be a mess of lines.

Just find examples and copy accurately while thinking about how it works. Best way to learn any technique.

Do any of you guys have problems with getting mad as you draw? Quite often I find myself getting mad as I attempt to draw something and it doesn't turn out the right way. Is the key just patience and dedication, or is art not for me if I can't control my temper?
>>
>>2470292
If it constantly happens, of course there's an issue. I think most people go through this though so it's okay.
>>

i had issues with this in my late teens. i used to be really really bad about associating artistic ability with self-worth. i also have anxiety issues about not doing art fast enough, not being a young prodigy already, etc., though i've gotten a lot better about it

when you start getting frustrated, just take a break. go on a short walk or get a snack and watch a short episode of a show you like. when you come back, take a bit to focus on what you do and don't like about your picture before you start back up again. completing a picture is not a race to the finish (unless its commission i guess), and if you treat it like one, you're not going to learn anything
>>
>>2470292
I don't get seriously angry but I'm constantly disheartened and frustrated with what I draw.

I just hope its something that will eventually pass the more experienced I get.

Downloaded infinite painter and Sketchbook Pro and I'm very pleased with how robust they are.

Now I just need to have the FUCKING SELF DISCIPLINE to do fundamental and iterative practice drawings every day to whip these fuckin skills into shape. (wish me luck.. Or call me a faggot wannabe, one of those has got to work as motivation)

Depends on what you think is an interesting medium.
Pencil, lead holder, fineliner, ballpoint, those are pretty basic things to have.

You'll mostly just use your favourite pencil.
I would very much recommend against buying a big box of different kinds of pencils.

I'm working on something that involves my self portrait along with a couple of stock faces that I tried to give a sort of crude look to. I'm not sure where to take the picture. I want the five faces on the right to look jarring or somehow distorted, and maybe give the self portrait more dimension?

I would love for this to be heavily mixed media with anything that wouldn't involve collaging. So any ideas what inks or paints I could maybe work in there, or impressions with where I could take this, I would really appreciate any and all help and advice.

Inconsistent white causes her face to appear deformed in places.

Work on hatching and it goes to B B.

Don't outline the highlight
>>
>>2471429
It's a good start. You might try being more mindful of the direction of your pencil strokes, aka having them describe the contours of the apple (like emphasizing it's roundness or the direction the shadows are cast). The darkest shadow towards the top of the apple is coming across as a crease- was that a crease in the reference? I like the look of no outlines, but you might try seeing how it looks to have more uniform edges. Right now the edges are a bit jagged, which would be good for cloth but odd for a smooth apple.

Don't go soft. If you can't tell what the fuck is going on, say it to me. If you think the colors are ugly and muddy as fuck, say something. If you don't like the subject matter because you can't tell what it is, well.. You get the point.
>>
>>2472038
Doesn't look too bad. Colors are okay too, maybe a bit too desaturated in the shadows. The main issue is that you spent too much time detailing the head but the overall composition isn't there yet. i don't think rough line are enough to make the image work. But you can easily correct that.

I tried a new approach to rendering - less mechanical than what I'm used to but I felt it worked nicely. I moved from contour drawing to blocking, rendering, and then fine detail work.

I'd appreciate any criticism you can offer. I wasn't able to finish because the Gallery had to close.

I wasn't paying attention and went for the feel more then anything, keeping the focus between his bandage gloves and pretty face. At this point, I'm too far in so I'll just let it be

>>2472224
not really, I only spent 3, maybe 3 and a 1/2 hours on it, so the least I can do is but the effort in to touch it up and play with the color and feel. I'll be moving on to more studies tomorrow morning of pretty woman and gestures, this was just an outing to try something else and learn a little.

Not really. I do belong here, I just put more effort into rendering this, so it looks more put together. If it was a throwaway sketch or just some gesture there would be plenty of issues to point out. I get that your trying to be noble but I'm not the best example. The anons that responded to me were right, no matter how they said it or in what manner. You sound like the type of person that says "show your work" when they get a crit. A crit is a crit and they are always usable, no matter how sharp or harsh it seems. My feelings aren't hurt because I'm not a child. Go white knight somewhere else please
>>
>>2472181
What grade pencil do you use? Standard 2HB? Get a test paper (preferably of the same type of paper you are using since it would be the same texture) and go wild with making light to dark. Try to do a simple shading just focusing on going as dark as you can until you fade it out into the paper color. Something like your practice from the other night could benefit with more contrast.
>>
>>2472259
Go to step two and learn how to construct objects you are drawing. Find pictures you like or character you like and copy them free hand when you are applying your construction techniques that you are learning.

It is much easier to learn when you are doing something you want to do.

>It is much easier to learn when you are doing something you want to do.

This is the most important piece of advice I've gotten in my entire time of doing this. Please please keep this in mind. This is all supposed to be fun.
>>
>>2472289
Sometimes you really have to continuously push yourself to keep going though.
>>
>>2471429
Slow down with your shading. If you go fast it will often have a scratchy look, though if you want that style do what the other anon suggested and have all the lines go in one direction. If you shade in various directions they will begin to clash as you can see with your core shadow on the apple which is dark and goes in a different direction from all the other lines outside of the shading on the edge of the apple.

Since you are doing still life it would be a real life drawing, real life doesn't have outlines so you have to use your values to go ahead and create the shapes you want.

Though good job, that drawing has a lot of the core concepts of light and dark, though it does seem like it is missing the light reflected off the table and hitting the underside of the apple to slightly lighten it up.
>>
>>2472287
You will have a lot of trouble going dark if you use a 2H or 2HB. Get some B type pencils like a 2, 4, and 8. It will be a LOT easier to go dark and your shading will really start to pop out.
>>
>>2472272
But I mean what book?
I have a very basic grasp of human anatomy, IE lenths and such
But everything else is a mystery
And really, I should copy other peoples work for learning purposes? Like not tracing but copying with the eye?
I was always thought I shouldnt be drawing Anime when learning, thats what I heard
>>
>>2472314
Go with Loomis so you can get use to construction. There is nothing wrong with hand copying anime. You develop a lot of skills that can be transferable to other drawing like still life. Trying to get the correct angles that the arms and legs are going off to, getting correct proportions form the picture you are copying from, possibly getting a taste of basic light and dark, become more and more confident with drawing your lines and outputting better line quality, being able to construct objects better and possibly even faster. These are skills that can be transferred away from anime.

Might as well start with something you are interested in so you want to draw, you want to stay around and continue doing it, but as you go further and further you might want to expand yourself and push yourself further and go beyond anime if that is what originally interests you.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with copying peoples work as long as you aren't claiming it as your own. People often copy down sketches from art masters or draw from life. There is a lot to learn from a lot of areas but you have to be willing to sit down and practice it.

Your first drawing will be far from perfect, but don't get discouraged because it will probably be better than any drawing you have done before hand, that will apply more so to your second drawing and so on. So don't become distraught about what you weren't capable of doing compared to other people and remind yourself what you are now capable of doing over your past self.
>>
>>2472314
You need to be 100% sure you know why you made a certain stroke or why you shaded in a certain way. If you are, copying is an okay way to learn. Just don't do it a lot and don't lie to yourself.

Use pencil, learn to render with tone.

pencil and drawing is crucial to painting. Drawing is the fastest way to learn to paint.

It teaches you elements of lighting that are identical in painting. So make sure you don't use pen as much dude.

Your pencil is your friend. Use your thumb and the end of the pencil and measure things from what you are referencing and see how they measure up to one another. Not only that but you can get the angles with your pencil if you tilt it and try to keep that angle and translate it to your drawing.

I don't know what you mean by shading in traditional comic art because there are many ways to shade comics. Try Drawing comics the marver way. And here are 2 books on pen drawing that might help you:

I've stopped caring about getting good at this after learning everybody just uses a billion references at the highest level to draw what they do. That just doesn't feel right to me.

The only thing that could ever get me back into this is if somebody can show me a way to visualize something in my imagination and hold that picture so I can draw it. Right now I can get a picture started but I can't keep it in place.
>>
>>2472297
Hey if you don't mind i'm going to address this because I hear this alot. If you ever reach a point to where you feel like you have to push yourself then take that as a cue. You should stop and instead work on your motivation and then come back when you care so much that you don't feel like you have to push for it anymore. Don't continue to try when you don't care. Get the passion and fun back and never draw without it.

I have a lot more experience with programming than drawing, but the 2 aren't completely exclusive, especially in terms of motivation. I'll talk about my experience with programming.

And I have to disagree with your post. In my personal experience, the times when I didn't have to push myself were few and far in between. Most of the work I did was when I was moderately pissed off and wanted to quit the project and say fuck it, but I pushed through it, and pushed, and pushed. Because if you don't push and quit the second it becomes frustrating and not 'fun', how are you going to progress?

>You should stop and instead work on your motivation

How the hell do you work on motivation? It comes and goes, it's very hard to trigger it, and if you do: it doesn't stay for long.

The passion might be there muddied in the background, but it won't always be fun, it won't be fun most of the time.
>>
>>2472038
It's cross eyed and looks retarded. Try to block in all your colors and where you want your shadows to be before you start rendering. A big problem with a lot of artists in that they jump right into details before putting everything else into place first.
>>
>>2473166
Is your name Meena?
>>
>>2473174

Hey, programmer here too. I'll agree with that. Most of my work is done just because I need to do it and do it correctly, not because I receive pleasure from it. I started studying drawing recently and a lot of it isn't fun at all, but I want to improve and be able to create something worthwhile more than I want to just have fun.
>>
What's a reasonable amount of time to put in every day to see steady progress, all else being equal? I'm prepared for a grind but I keep seeing people who say they spent 12 hours a day working on shade values for ten years and they're just getting started etc., it's really daunting.

Yep, pretty much this. Motivation is a meme, you have to push yourself through the tough stuff if you want to achieve anything regardless of what you do. I used to play piano and it was the same thing, if I wanted a good technique to play the beautiful songs, I first had to grind through boring ass scales. It wasn't fun, it wasn't creative, it was boring and I hated it with a passion but I really wanted to be able to play all the awesome shit so I pushed through.

I work as a programmer and as deadlines come closer my productivity increases exponentially. I just wish I could space out my work properly. It's 2 AM and I just started working on a project that's due sunday and I had a month to do it.

12 hours a day is asking for carpal tunnel and people are exaggerating here like crazy. How much to practice depends on how much you want to improve. But the best thing my old piano teacher taught me was the 20 minute rule.

Basically, you need to do at least 20 minutes of focused practice every day. 20 minutes is like a magic line after which the brain thinks(no science just experience of a very good teacher with years of teaching behind her belt) that this is something important so it stores it. If however you don't practice for a day, or do less than 20 minutes, brain starts to throw it out so with every day that you don't practice you lose progress that you made the previous day. Now 20 minutes is very little to see significant progress but keep that as a minimum.

As I said, in my experience this works. If you're busy and put in say only hour every day, you will see more improvement than if you didn't draw for 5 days and then crammed 10 hours of drawing into a weekend. Practicing regularly is more important than just the amount of hours you put in.

Well that's much more encouraging and fits with my half-assed knowledge of memory storage. Thanks.

This is important advice. Incidentally, it's for this reason language classes are taught with more, often shorter classes when they can (usually college-level, where they don't have to fit a bell schedule). Language can only be learned through grinding and memorization, so to learn it quickly, you have to drill it constantly.

Noticed the cross eyes as soon as I posted. So, the method should go something like:
-Thumbnail composition
-Sketch
-Line ( And line again if needed, though I usually skip lining altogether and go straight to blocking / coloring )
-Block in shadows and colors
-Refine and smooth as needed
-Details, details, details
-Finish

Who /programmer/ here?
I do

1. Did I get the boobs right (as in, laying naturally on her body instead of being unnaturally perky?)

2. How badly did I fuck up the hair?
>>
So I'm facing issues where I draw things nicely and they look okay but it almost always comes off out of scale, either too small or too big

What do you guys think?

her nipples look cartoonish, like blobs set right in the centre of the breasts. they should be pointing slightly outward. Also her head looks kind of huge.

there's a whole thing with drawing triangles and their relation to the spine:

it's one of those things like pupil placement that should be easy but it's easy to completely fuck up if you don't get it just right
