What does /ic/ think of sculpting?

Did you know that due to recent events the market for little plastic fantasy men is opening up pretty well?
>>
irl sculpting is hard, the medium is stubborn and won't lose mass when you will it. I thought It'd be more intuitive, but fuck no.

>Did you know that due to recent events the market for little plastic fantasy men is opening up pretty well?

Sounds like a dead end, when you account for 3D printing. A million people can order the same figurine (dl the print data for free even), can print tweaked game characters etc. while a thousand artists sell nothing. If you manage to make a name for yourself early on you can perhaps be the go-to artist on some internet site for generic sculptures for quite a while, but you'll be an exception.

Then you have of course the snobs, who want one of a kind, but those don't differ from what sculpture market always was and plastic won't satisfy them.

Comission work is how it'll look like for most people in the end. Just like illustration.

I'd say if you aim for trad sculpting you cover snobs, if digital go make assets for something biugger, than just the sum of shapes you commit to red clay.

What recent events?

OP, I recently just got into sculpting. It's really fun! I do stone sculpture, started with soapstone and will move to alabaster after. It's more of a hobby to me however; I don't know anything about money.

Anyways, does anyone have tips for finding stones? I live in Chicago and cant find any stones locally. I have to order them online which is kinda expensive even though it takes a while to carve them. I also worry about how they are treated during shipping. Does anyone think that art schools/college or sculpting places would sell sculpting stones to me?

3d printed plastic men look like shit and will for the forseable furture unless the industrial printers that have been around for almost a decade now fall to reasonable price, however even if those printers come down to 750 dollars a pop form their near 7k current price tag it would still only be cost effective for the most avid of hobbyists. Also for 3d printed multi part plastic kits to cover the range of desired miniatures would require skilled individuals to go directly against their own self interest. Recasting will always be a more effective form of miniature piracy than 3d printing.

Not to mention handsculpted minis are almost always better looking save for the most mechanical of subject matters.

Very niche but it could get really popular unexpectedly.

I'be been fugging with plastilin recently, it's fun but hard to achieve anything great with it. What are some other similar mediums you guys would recommand ?

maybe the future will be selling 3d printing files instead of actual figures

They'll dl it for free. Eventually it'll get saturated to a degree, where there's no point in requesting new stuff, when ther's an endless gallery of freebies waiting for you online. Not to mention it won't be much harder to scan a figurine than a book. Even with the current scanning techniques you get 95% hard surface fidelity already. Add some sort of smoothing script and you get the coordinates to print copies of somebody's work in .obj format. This then gets uploaded to figurinebay.kek and starts to compete with your nonfree product.

Like I said: it'll end with individual comission jobs. But unlike these two knuckleheads >>2460886 >>2462968 seem to imply I never said early comers can't make good money - quite the opposite. Just if you think this model will remain lucrative for more than maybe a decade at most, then you're out of luck.

Certainly anybody who'll start trad sculpting now to get in on it is delusional. This is good for everyone already somewhat qualified to try their hand in, not so much so for the upcoming generation.

Zbrush. I know the UI is horrible, but it's so much easier and faster than policlay and any other physical stuff.

Just grit your teeth and wait for cheap 3D goggles. I bet it'll feel a lot more natural, when you can sculpt with those weee u dildoes that tend to come with them, than with a tablet. Sculpting one handed is my main gripe with didgital.

As far as I'm concerned it's better than 3/4ths of related 3D programs (besides the hidden bullshit, like remeshing differently, when you press down alt, but never signalizing it in any way etc. Fuck that). However the common impression on 4chan is that its horrible and I want him to brace himself, so he won't give up right away.

Most advanced software has horrible unoptimised UIs, "legacy features" and the like, we just became accustomed to it. So I'd say its still half-true.
