Bring us your roughs, your storyboards, your pencil tests etc. Talk about industry, schools, the hopelessness of it all, how we all gonna make it etc.

If you're gonna post animation that isn't yours give source or state that it isn't yours.

Keep shitposting to a minimum. Don't feed the trolls.

Look good frame by frame.

Around 1.60sec and 1.67sec it might have been cool to have the eyelid open up slower with a few dashes scattered over the horizontal.

As if certain parts of the eyelid were stuck in place while it tried to open its eyes.

I want to use colored lines like they do in anime (pic related) for coloring. The fill tool merges over certain colored lines making shadows and highlights much easier to add. I imagine it would be useful for doing a lineless style too.
I know paint man hd can do it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPHGpk4KlAk In the video they call it "automatic color trace"
but because I'm on mac I can't use that software. Do you guys know any way I can make this work in other software?
>>
>>2459093
I was hoping they would have this feature in open toonz but I can't find it, and it's buggy as hell so unusable.
>>

OpenToonz is out, animation software used by names such as Studio Ghibli, made open-source & free
Haven't tried it myself, but I thought it'd be relevant to the thread
>>
>>2459457
Doesnt Ghibli use pencil and paper for their animations? I think Toonz is using, "The animation software ghibli uses" as a selling point.

Ive heard the software crashes alot.

I think Toonz would benefit people who animate with paper and pencil. IMHO senpai
>>
>>2459093
>but because I'm on mac I can't use that software
There's a Mac version.
Just rent it. It's only $5 a month.
>>
>>2459469
Toonz was heavily customized per each request they had during animation at Ghibli.

The free one won't be the same version as the Ghibli one, definitely not.

They use pencil and paper for lines yes, but then everything else is done in Toonz...coloring, compositing, effects, etc.

I actually have more interest in the software used for Ghost in the Shell. It was a rarely known Japanese bundle that seems to have disappeared from the face of the planet.
>>
>>2459481
Toonz might help if you use photoshop to animate. Maybe animate, color, and time image sequences ( or what ever).

Open source toonz will kill pencil 2d for good

okay, but I'm looking at actual feedback on the parts that are animating. Lel memes off the table, I find puppeting a chore but I want to know if timing on everything felt right. The goal of the project was to make a short, so we didn't actually get feedback on a lot of the production aspects.

>>
>>2459745

>>
>>2459745
The animation isn't too bad. But there are a couple of issues I see. The animation of the dogs eyes is pretty bad, it just moves like how a total beginner would tween something in flash. It really stands out since the rest of your short isn't animated that badly at all. The small frame by frame portion when the old guy was talking was nicely done. The part at the end where he pushes the guy to the ground also looked off. The movement seemed well thought out but I think the timing is off. He moves a bit too slowly and that really makes the tweeting stand out. So I'd probably tweak that s bit. I think you animated that guy falling awkwardly for comedic purposes so I think that was fine.

Did a short animation of another artist's character. I wanted to see if I could do clean-up lineless animation all on one layer similar to how I do normal clean-up animation, but it pops in quite a few spots and was a pain to do. This is my first storyboard I've done for a school application. The 'rules' were to tell a story of character wanting to go to place A, but something happens and he ends up in place B where a surprise awaits him, 8-10 panels, no text, minimum of three characters/objects.

that is pretty hilarious. but as it stands, it's confusing. first off - the first panel shows the result of the bumping in, but there is no orientation for the viewer. give us some establishing shots. I also have no sense for the characters. as the faces are hidden for the first three panels.
the composition could be better, most of the time you're a bit too close.
last I would go with a more traditional storyboard layout - from top to down, so there's no misunderstanding with reading order.

could I suggest to leave everything as it stands? It could be interesting to see what your teacher's saying.
>>
>>2465689
sorry it's hard to make out what is going on here.

try it again. keep it simple, but clear. for closeups use faces with visible emotions.
put notes under the panels.
I like the cinematic shots though, the flashlight scene for example.
>>
>>2466072
Thanks. I'm glad to hear that it needs more clarity. I just got done doing figure studies so I'll try the storyboarding tomorrow
>>
>>2466064
Thank you.

The 8-10 panel restriction was the biggest troublemaker for this one. The last two panels could be told in one panel (over the old mans shoulder view). Same with the second and third panel (over the shoulder of the cop/stripper), which would give me some room for establishing shots, but I think the story might just be too difficult for me to tell coherently in 8-10 panels, so I'll try my hand at a more straight forward one and keep this as a backup.

another concern I have is that it doesn't actually follow the rules precisely. the story had to be:

>Character X wants to go to a place A ->something happens -> ends up in place B

while my layout is

>something happens -> character wants to go to a place A -> ends up in place B

What are the benefits of animating traditionally on paper, as opposed to digitally? I'm planning on buying a light pad and a peg bar but I'm just curious as to see the differences in terms of learning principles when animating.

>>
>>2466447
Not many, except you can reuse the light box for other things. Paper is far from perfectly transparent and you want to avoid staring into a light bulb all day.

-ACME pegbar limits you in what paper you can use, when for the start you would probably just rather stick with normal copy paper because you do mostly roughs. There is also no way you get a punch for less than a few hundred dollar. It's a well designed rip-off.

-animation paper isn't that great and expensive and only few shops sell it.

-animation paper doesn't have the same format as normal paper, so it won't fit into a normal scanner.

-scanning and realigning is annoying.

If you want to do it with paper, you are better of replacing ACME pegbar stuff with normal hole punches and gluing something to a thin metal strip/ruler to make your own pegbar. Saves you $30-40 right here.

Or just go digital. But then some anons here talk about that programs have limits on frames(?).

Basically, it's only useful if you have a lightbox already and want to play around.

she's stuttering after the flip. I can only guess what you were trying to do here (she's trying to catch her balance?) but because of the backward force it looks unnatural for her to almost trip forward again after the flip.
let her bend her knees more to show the impact.

It helps to know the starting and ending points of an action so you can just focus on the in-betweens. The more frames you add, the slower and smoother the transition will be.

have you subscribed? a couple of questions:

as it is a monthly program course, how often is new material opened? is there a timer running for each week?

what if I decide to skip a lesson? do I have access to new material?

if I cancel my subscription, will I still have access to the videos I paid for?

Yes I subscribed back in 2011; (also it's "bitey.com", not "bittey", whoops) a couple weeks in I retired from the course to practice drawing for obvious reasons (at least that's what I told myself I was doing) but I continued to let the course build up until there was no more content left.

It's a monthly course with new videos 'unlocked' for you on a weekly basis (49 videos total). They are permanently available after they're unlocked, if you ask Adam directly via email he might be willing to unlock them all for you at once if you want but I'm not sure.

I don't know if he actually monitors the forums or participates in the course directly anymore but it's an incredible amount of well written and produced material that is more than worth the cost of entry regardless of whether he maintains it personally or not.

Here's a cringe-worthy video I made for week 2's "flame" effect course 5 years ago as an example (you're not generally tasked with making a scene out of the effect for the record, you're just taught how to achieve the effect and left hoping you're able to do even half as good of a job as he is)

SO a few weeks ago (Or maybe months?) there was someone posting in one of these animation threads and they were posting the roughs for a little fox that was sorta skipping? Idk it was cute but unfinished.

If that person is here and can repost that please do because follow up: If you ARE that person, are you about to graduate from RMCAD?

I'm asking because i checked out the senior exhibition and I swear to god one of the animations in there looked exactly like a finished product of that rough animation and I'm curious to know if its the same person without having to go through the awkwardness of stealing one of their business cards and emailing them.

>>2487396
Agreed. You probably should've just started over on this one DESU.

I think the biggest problem is the arms being in front. If you wanted a silly walk, having them behind or at the side unmoving would've been better since the focus is on the legs and feet. She also proportionally looks stunted AF like her body didn't develop properly, some kind of dwarfism in a way only tall?
>>
>>2487034
This is super cute but I think you should fix her Glasses. You have a front view of her glasses on a sideview. Glasses don't look like that, even goggles would look differently from the side. If you fix that one detail I think it'll be great.

yeah i would do a few regular walkcycles before going into a character walk.

have you read the animator's survival kit? before all the drawings and stuff he writes about how technical animation is, and how important it is for an animator to have all the technical stuff be second nature before getting into the complicated performance stuff. you shouldn't have to think about spacing, overlapping action, arcs, etc., the goal is for all that to come to you naturally.

I've heard that in game development there's 100:1 ratio between hours of development and hours in game play.

Now, obviously, animation can vary widely. However for just an "ordinary" animation production, not super detailed but not minimal and cheap either, how many hours would you say you need to put in to get an hour out?

Sorry if the question is vague, but if you could give as many estimates as you can on different pieces you've done or seen done I'd really appreciate it.
>>
>>2489891
The best frame of reference I could give you is that Studio Ghibli made 5 minutes of complete animation per month, if my memory serves me correctly. That is, fully inbetweened, colored and fit together with a background.

Listening to any sort of low audio is a good stimulation when doing brain/creative work. Things being too quiet have been shown to make people work worse, though things like background noises from a restaurant or whatever work as well. I always have a fan running for white noise.

I actually really like what you have going, particularly the expression and the colouration of the fire, however, the colours in the first portion of it almost seem a bit stark and almost pastel-like. I'd also recommend making the outline for the hair a bit more orangey than it is right now, and possibly the hair more in the realm of yellow to help differentiate it from the background green in the grass a bit more.
That all I got.
Oh yeah and I like the end pose.

Great job on the motions. Any advice for beginning animators?
>>
>>2492468
Basically, if it looks wrong to you, then it's wrong.

You should have a really good idea of how you want your animation to look.
And if what you've made is nowhere near what you WANT to make, then it's wrong.
If the timing looks wrong to you, then it's wrong.
If the motion looks wrong to you, then it's wrong.

Then, spend time fixing those things until they become exactly what you imagined them to be.

Really nice flow, but an attack would normally be faster. Adjusting the smears so they're onscreen for fewer frames while occupying a larger space will help sell the intensity of the attack. Then apply some of that buttery smoothness of yours to the impact of the block.

Also, fighting tip: Jackie Chan actually shows the attack twice when he cuts the camera like you're doing. So you cut riiiiight before impact, then when you cut to the closeup, start a few frames back from where you cut. The eye will string it together properly when you do it properly and make the blow look really powerful.

I'm too lazy to find it, but search for "Jackie Chan every frame a painting".Dude knows how to film fight scenes.

Hey, guys. I bought an old computer for parts and the hard drive had a copy of toonboom studio on it. I hear you can rotoscope with it. I figure it could be a nice exercise to dick around with a set of training wheels to kinda see how movement breaks down a bit better, timing, spacing, weight, balance, all that jazz.

Anyone know a decent free video editing software I can use to dice up a few videos I like into short clips so I don't have to load the entire video into toonboom just to fuck with the 10-30 seconds I like.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like a secret agent and a cop bumped into each other in a hallway, the secret agent was supposed to kill a mob boss while the cop was actually a stripper for a bachelorette party.

They ended up dropping their keycards and grabbing the wrong ones, so the secret agent ended up at the party and the stripper ended up stripping for the mob boss

Or at least, thats what I assume
