Let's have a thread on your stats for where you post your art. Tumblr as the example but whatever works. This isn't meant to be a self promotion thread since we have one of those.
Here post your stats, how long you've been drawing, how long you've been uploading to a blog/profile, etc.

I'll post my modest stat screen to get the ball rolling, but I'm curious what kind of numbers some of you guys have. Any questions/tips about self promotion also encouraged.

And for those of you who put all your art in a shoebox under your bed, never to show anyone, and scoff at all the soulless attention-whores who share their art, hit the hide button or something.
>>
...this is quite difficult. You just want us to collect screencaps of all the notes/likes/favs we got on all forms of social media? At least come to the table with an app that can connect to facebook which can connect to all those platforms. Too much effort to wave my e-peen.
>>
>>2447670

Tumblr literally has a stats screen
>>
>>2447663
Out of curiosity what's with all this stat collecting anon? I've been following your threads and I'm just wondering what your aim might be.

I have 1.5k followers +, started "trying" a year ago, but haven't updated since December. I have around 50 posts. Top posts has around 7k+ notes, average posts a few k in likes and shares. I was very fandom specific though, so I stopped posting because I wanted to do more original stuff.

I don't see the follower thing as a big thing..just continue to git gud. If it's a big deal however just post constant fanart (with effort and consistency in quality). Once you have followers with big followings they tend to do reblog/share and that exposed your art to blogs with similar interests. If you link your social medias deviantart/instagram/tumblr you can multiply your exposure as well.

Though if you're really good the numbers will come regardless.

I've been trying to pay more attention to my Tumblr. Before, I posted maybe one thing a week but have increased it to at least 3 - 4 times a week. It was mostly original character stuff, and still is, but decided to mix it up with some fanart and a couple of practice animations, which explains the spike. But for the most part, my original stuff still doesn't get much attenion. Maybe 10 - 15 notes on average still.
>>

how many pieces do you post per month? how many followers do you get monthly? please and thank you
>>
>>2447935
Those stats are probably the only decent things to go by. Prior to that, my account was pretty dead with a few things being posted a month, mostly of my own characters. Would be lucky to get maybe a couple of followers or notes a month. Decided to step up my game, post more art, include some fanart, advertise my work more on Reddit, Imgur, and here and got around 100 followers the past month or so. Since most of my art is still 80% original stuff, progress is still very slow. But I don't really want to shill out by drawing only fanart, I'll only do it if I'm into it.

This month I've posted at least every other day.

i haven't posted anything for a while, but since i hit around 1,500 followers i've been getting 2-5 followers daily. i kind of liked it better when i had fewer followers because i could recognize who liked my posts and build some kind of rapport with them, but now it's sort of a blur. i've had my Tumblr for 3 or so years, but only hit 500 followers around this time last year. it really started to pick up suddenly, not entirely sure why.

i've found that posting fanart rarely gets you any 'worthwhile' followers. by worthwhile, i mean that the followers you get from it will only pay attention to you if you do more fanart, and if you don't they will eventually unfollow you. posting original artwork that i really enjoyed making has, in the past, brought in the cool followers.

This is the first thread I've made in months and I've never made a thread on the topic, so you're probably mistaking me for somebody else. I don't remember seeing many threads on this specifically.

I think most people who have a tumblr at least glance at their stats screen now and then. It's just interesting to see what people enjoy your stuff. I just figured it'd be fun given how many people post in the self promo threads, all of them have stats screens that are easily reached. I think deviantart has some sort of stats page too.

I ditched my old tumblr because I was sick of everyone i had followed, and the period of time i spent brainwashed when I was in high school and retarded about everything so I just want that one to die (and since tumblr now does re-claim screennames it will eventually be removed, it's just a matter of time)

So my new one, which I'm being much more selective in what I post and look at, had 5 followers this week then jumped to 11 overnight because I made a political post about SJWs. Kinda trying to really nudge the psychos there into realizing they're psychos hurting every fucking cause out there. I blame them for the jump in hostility towards basically-everyone between Obama's last election and this one because it seriously got worse across the board IMO.

aside from that i couldn't tell you stats, what art i've posted so far has one or two notes.

My deviantart has like nothing lmfao because i barely post there.

Half the questions I asked don't even require record-keeping. If your social media doesn't have a convenient option to post nobody's going to force you. Easily 90% of the self promotion posts are tumblr blogs anyway, so sorry your specific needs aren't being catered to.

Have had my Tumblr since summer 2014. I haven't updated it in a while, thus the lower note count. It still grows organically and is a great funnel to my more engaging sites, such as Instagram.

One thing about Tumblr that rarely gets mentioned which is one of its best features (IMO) is the ability to submit work to other blogs. Creating an illustration and taking it "on tour" to a bunch of different art blogs can sometimes generate hundreds of followers per illustration.

Fan art adds a whole other level to this. I enjoy making fan art every once in a while, and it can be very powerful towards getting more eyes on your site. Let's say you make a nice little Zelda piece. In addition to submitting to the art blogs, you can hit up all of the general gaming blogs (which are numerous and very popular), all the pop culture blogs, and all the smaller Nintendo/Zelda blogs. Posting your fan art to your empty blog with no followers will get you nowhere. Submitting fan art to other blogs is a way to get instant access to thousands of people that you wouldn't normally have access to.

As for what blogs are best for this, do the digging yourself.

If you think drawing fan art is shameful, then you need to understand that absolutely no one cares about you or what you make.

Good luck!

I tried that but I think I'm a bit confused about it. On DeviantART, you can submit to clubs, but the link goes back to your artwork. If you choose to submit art on a Tumblr, it'll take you to a box and ask you to select a piece. But then isn't the blog just re-uploading your stuff and just taking reblogs and likes away from you?
>>
>>2449162

"You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you."

follow/like/comment on other people's work that you genuinely like. when posting art, sometimes it helps to think about 'would x like this?' you gain traction when someone who people pay attention to pays attention to you.

if you're interested in being a part of a specific community of artists, see what art platforms they use and try to jump in. try to decide /who/ you want to see your art and make it easier for them to see it. even if your art isn't great, i've seen lots of people vastly improve because they interact with artists who are better than them.

Notes and reblogs are essentially useless figures. They don't really matter in them selves - what matters is that people see your work, and they want to see more.

Submitting work to other blogs is all about funneling traffic to your blog and reaping the followers. When you submit work, it should be VERY clear that you made it, with links embedded in the image, in your name (by ______) and in your call to action (Follow his Tumblr for more). That's 3 links back to your Tumblr, and if people like it then they can easily follow you.

It doesn't matter if your blog generates thousands of notes or if another one does, since it will be obviously accredited to your Tumblr.

Sure, other blogs benefit from having a healthy submission supply, but the submissions are easy to do and do FAR more good for you than bad.

Kind of relevant to this thread especially with the talk of befriending and liking/commenting in other small artists pages to gain traction.
About 6-7 months ago Sam Peterson set up the art posse forum and started shilling it in twitch, fairly quickly twitch artists good and bad wanted to be a part of it mostly so they could get the viewers from other members when one goes offline for their twitch stream.
For example if Sam has 60 viewers and goes offline he'll host someone he knows and throw his 60 viewers at then.
Here's the beauty of this scheme.
He was a good enough artist that his polished work and offers of help and critique gained him massive amounts of popularity very quickly and he's now one of the biggest twitch creative streamers .
If a shitty artist tried the same thing they'd be so transparent and look desperate and no one would be interested.
So what I'm getting at is art groups are important teams or shared tags are important, and once you get good enough you can run the town.
Another example is baelee jae or however you spell her name the YouTube whore not the tranny. She has a video about collabing with other youtubers, she only wants to colab with people who have 100k subscribers in YouTube, she got the other artists to make their videos about the project and then in her description where she links to their stuff she fucked up half the links ( I believe on purpose) . again this is just to reiterate my point once you're in charge of a big swinging dick be it 100k+ instagram YouTube followers or 60-100 twitch viewers you can swing that dick around with no effort and be a dicktator and guide all eyes, wallets and praise into yourself.
Personally I don't see myself ever suckling someone else's teats

cant stress how important community building is. it doesnt matter if you post a lot or a little, tag or not, post on a million different sites, etc if youre just an "artist". making friends with people makes you human, so people want to see you succeed no matter what youre trying to do. it also gives you a "name" so to speak.

find people you dont mind showing up on your dash everyday and follow them. leave comments, talk to them. make friends. most times theyll follow back. awesome thing about tumblr/twitter/etc is that even if your whole friend group is unknown, theres a good chance that somebody knows somebody who knows somebody who will eventually see your work.

That's okay - that's not what submissions are meant to do. When you submit, you should be including clear links back to your blog. The whole goal of submissions is not to get more notes on your posts, but rather to get more followers for your own future posts.

>You should be submitting the link to your image for the other blog to reblog from your page, don't submit the image.
I would advise against this. I don't know of any submission Tumblr with a substantial following that does this. The worthwhile art blogs have too many submissions to go through, and they won't bother to put that together.

Anon as an artist you have to learn to PR, it's your job. And a good rule of thumb for PR is not posting crazy political rants, even if their well thought out.

I dont feel like doing a lot of fan art but i still want to get recognized. Right now i just have a few sketchbook pages scanned and a few sai photostudies... i know, never gonna make it, no spark, etc.

I want to upload a finished piece. But should i wait to build a following or... just produce finished piece after finished piece and let the initjal ones remain obscured by history?

Also I have interest in illustration and comics. Is it dumb to write and draw one whole comic and just leave it up to dry without any notes?

I guess i should google how to promote myself through various social media platforms. The way I see it right now... I have to make something that ends up at top of trending to kickstart it.

Fanart isn't a thing for everyone. Most of my followers are used to my art and many are not anime/game fans. All my fanart wasn't nearly as popular as my "real" art, so I'd recommend to just do whatever you're passionate about and it'll show.

I gained a small following by posting unfunny comic strips about vidya. And slice-of-life strips for the normies.

As much as you might hate it, link to Reddit for extra traffic. Especially subreddits that don't get much fanart posted to them- they're really grateful most the time.

the 'artists on tumblr' tag isn't going to do you any good. all the art in this tag is either really boring or top tier amazing. and that's because tumblr sometimes stamps this tag on posts that have already gained popularity.

you should use the tags that people from your intended audience use and check. is it an abbreviation? a trending challenge? what's the most common tag for the character? use tag reader on successful posts to get an idea. see what tags artists you admire use. nothing wrong with broad general tags, but if you want to utilize tags to get viewers, you can't just shoot without aiming at a target.

You can repost the same illustrations later on. No one is ever going to remotely pay attention enough to notice or care.

So true. There is no shame in social media

you're an idiot if you try to "play" social media or tumblr. There is absolutely no telling what people will like. It doesn't matter if the majority of the people that follow you reblog your posts it won't go big until you tickle the funny bone of that one random super popular mother fucker with hundreds of thousand of followers. That's the person that helps you get more views and followers.

And you can never tell what they are in the mood for that day. Just paint whatever interests you and eventually you'll trigger some cunt with the same tastes on days they are feeling extra loving and sharing.

Taking off on Tumblr is like gambling. You can either go in and leave it completely to chance, or you can play the game and maximize your odds with good tagging/fan art/promoting yourself elsewhere/posting at optimal times etc. (like knowing poker strategies or the odds when you're betting on a horse, I don't fucking know, you get the point of the analogy).
Even if you play the game, sometimes you'll just get fucked. Somebody of a similar skill level with similar content who 100% wings it will get ten times your following because some megablog catapulted them. But in terms of averages, the person who plays the game will do better. If nothing else, they will increase their chances of getting noticed by that megablog.

Just leaving it 100% to chance is going to, on average, get reduced returns than enhancing your chances by 'playing' social media.

I dunno about others, but I find it fun. Sure there's a bit of an ego element (whether we admit it or not we all enjoy it when someone else enjoys our art), but how much I enjoy a particular drawing isn't influenced by how popular it will be. My social media stuff is like another activity altogether, cultivating it is kind of like its own hobby. Finding the optimal strategies and getting a big number of followers is just part of the fun, it just also happens to complement artistic ambitions too.

From my experience, forcing yourself to do things you don't give a shit about is draining, depressing and counter productive 'cause it misleads your audience.

If you love drawing shipping Undertale fanart, knock yourself out. If you just want to draw your things, get better at that.

Obviously, I always include a "Follow XY for more" link. Still, people are too lazy or indifferent to click on that.
