So, at university today I got this Game Design class, now I'm supposed to make pixel art for a 2d game like "Zelda: A Link to the Past" and such.

Where do I start learning how to make art assets to a game like this?

Please help.

pixel art looks fucking amazing when you draw stuff normally and then shrink it down. yuo gotta be able to paint and draw well though.

Search for ripped resources of those games (i.e: Tilesets, sprite sets...) and try to see which elements do they have and make yours based on the shit you find.

Also, which uni do you assist?

How much are you going to do? and how much time do you have?

Cuz making a whole sprite set in one day is literally Sudoku.

Learn the basics here, look at RPG sprites for reference of what to do and you're golden

pixelation has plenty of old threads on making tilesets, try searching that forum. also search pixeljoint's gallery for mockups and tilesets.

A good start is RPGMaker MV its JS based and easy to learn. And ther is RPGMaker VX Ace which is ruby based. Both great software with lots of community supprt. Get em on Steam.

holy fuck those are beautiful. are they purchaseable?
>>
>>2447574
Probably not as it's by quite a good pixel artist made specifically for one game.

I guess your starting point would be how to make nice lines and curves like the green one pic related. It's chapter 3. Chapter 2 in the translation.

Have fun.

I have almost 6 months.

I know how to draw and am currently enrolled in a drawing class, but I'm clueless about sprites and digital art.

Not OP, but shut up.

Not everyone wants some boring STEM job.
>>
Think about the context of the tile before you make it, and design it with reusability in mind.
>>
>>2447422
This is funny because I've been planning on doing the exact same thing. So thanks OP for making this thread.

Those are truly amazing.

Question : are RPGmaker programs good enough that the final product can truly feel as personal as one put work into it? I don't know how to code or anything at all, I'm just an artist, so if the technical problems can entirely be made easier through RPGmaker and such it means I'd be able to do it.
>>
>>2448595
Yes, RPG maker games can go pretty far. Check out LISA on steam to see one that really doesn't look like it was made in rpg maker. >>2448595

>>2448611
I see, that's nice then. Although I know coding would be a great thing to learn I already have my hands full with art and other hobbies so if I can avoid having to learn that it'd be really helpful.

Also the reason I asked is because I'd like to do something similar to 2D Zelda games but without it being a vulgar copy or too heavily inspired when it comes to the mechanics and the likes. But well rather than ask thousands of questions I think I'll just inform myself and try the program directly.

>RPGMaker MV its JS based and easy to learn

Like for example I have no idea what JS or Ruby are.

why even bother? its even more useless then art degree

You should have studied English. Art degree (MFA) is absolutely necessary for teaching at the college level, and a BFA (if you can fund it without massive loans) is a huge boost to someone who wants to be a practicing artist.
>>
>>2447495

These are amazing, I think the key is just being good at painting and replicate it with less pixels.
>>
>>2447513
How's Gamemaker Studio compared to these two?
>>
>>2447422
>at university

You're a dumbass OP. Get your money back ASAP
>>
Rpg maker is cool as long you can use your artwork, I would say. Otherwise it'll look like a programming prototype with in-built engine resources, like dozens of ue4 projects nowadays.

And the RM community is crazy active. You can find anything, even free tutorial bibles. Don't mind the crap projects. If you're really into game design I can't think an easiest tool to learn/prototyping.

Also >>2447495 those look amazing
>>
>>2448735
Seems like RPG maker is just focused on RPGs and a specific type of that, while GameMaker is more versatile.
Neither should be difficult to learn.
