i like it, i think. I think the sheets (i assume they're sheets) are a bit too stiff-looking, they feel very stone like. maybe that's just my mind playing tricks on me since there are actual stones as well, but the two substances should be very distinct.
i'm a sucker for space stuff though so i like the nebula lookin deal, could be a bit more transparent though imo. also the largest star seems to have something bizarre hanging off its flare, not sure if that's intentional or not.
>>2447287
pick up scott robertson man. your perspective on those lamps is way off in many spots.
>>2447845
not op but how in depth does robertson go into perspective?
is there a certain way youre supposed to do oils? ive been doing light layers over the past like 3 days and i dont think its right because its turning out like a watercolor. i dont have any training in oils btw spare a 'graphed' assignment in highschool.
>>2447970
he goes pretty damn far into it
he covers 1 point 2 point 3 point and even 5 point perspectives.
>>2447978
I think the only set rule for oils is the fat over lean rule, meaning each new layer needs to have a higher oil content to ensure proper drying/hardening and prevent cracking. This rule can be bent somewhat by using an alkyd medium such as liquin.
>>2447978
if you like the look then what's the issue? if you don't then use less thinner and do fewer, thicker, layers. oils are great because you can get so many kinds of looks from them
>>2448230
i bought some liquin to use but i havent touched it yet, really im just experimenting with turpentine I think i want to focus on getting the right tones and colors. I heard lighter fluid is quick drying too too
>>2447287
Why are you studying perspective with paint?
would be so much cheaper to get familiar with that shit with a pencil and shit paper
>>2448553
>implying i'm not also doing that
a.) i like painting, so using a tiny dallop of black paint and a lot of water doesn't seem like a waste to me, and b.) if i want to paint in perspective it seems like i should learn to PAINT, no?
>>2448573
the material is pretty irrelevant, so you pick the most efficient one, just picking a sketchbook and drawing a few hundred boxes or lamps in correct perspective is a much more efficient use of your time, and it WILL transfer to painting but whatever man
>>2448533
Well, if you want less transparency use more paint and less thinner, you can always do thin washes on top of that if you want. Also pigments vary from opaque to semi-opaque to transparent, so pay attention to that. They also have different drying times. Just experiment, I'm new to oils myself and I'm having a blast.
>>2447978
If you want the paint to mix well, you'll have to add a bit of linseed or stand oil to your turpentine (in a glass dropper or something).
Are you using sable brushes? Looks like it's got more turpentine than paint.
>>2448697
theyre like the 64 combo pack synthetic brand i really dont have a preference or know enough to have one. but yeah its turning out like a watercolor because i keep puting too much turpentine in it because i want too thin of layers and they take forever to dry. im kind of having a hard time just using a ton of paint in thick layers because paint costs a lot. heres a current pic
>>2448783
It looks gorgeous so far, maybe it will have a hazy ambient light quality to it, so that you're not sure what time of day it will be?
Is that a mixed medium bottle there with the black cap?
>>2448786
thats the liquin bottle and heres the original picture. the colors arent right yet but yeah its really hazy, i think the majority of it is cold so lots of blues and greens
>>2448788
Interesting composition, we can't really 'enter' the foreground here as viewers, but the background seems to offer us the option of nestling within an alcove. You might be able to exploit that element of the photo.
Will you leave the background lighter?
>>2448794
yeah i think but ill just see where i goes i just want it to be accurate to the picture. ill post it i think when its done
>>2448783
i like the light look, just be careful that areas that need definition don't lose it.
Just some quick watercolor sketches.
Yeah, I'm kind of impatient.
kinda old but i like it a lot
Crit
Finished work, all acrylic, the graffitti efect was made with a airbrush.
Hope the thread is not dead already.
>>2450617
its good technically but I think you could've pushed the slight distorting on her face a lot further and made it stronger.
im new to painting..what should I start first with? what are the tools needed, anything I need to know? Do I need to be great artist before I jump to painting?
>>2450618
yeah, it could be better, but I made it spontaneously
>>2450617
I like the airbrush textures and abstract framing of the face, especially where the linework of the hair becomes transparent at the top.
the rendering of the nose and lips could have usttle more attention, and I get that you're going for an expressionistic mix of realism and abstraction, but the areas you chose just make the piece seem unfinished.
I think that if you used color over the eye and added more separations of the face, it might go further to create a consistent effect.
>>2450655
Hey, I like the complete separation you did in the eye!
The only idea I had when I painted this was made it with a notorious brushing, I wasn't looking for a perfect smoothing effect. And the palette of colours was already decided too before start, but I thinked on use magenta for the only eye you know.
Thanks!
quick abstracted sketch of some wooden beams near my apartment
>>2452876
You did it
Its a masterpiece
>>2452876
really like this a lot
Hi, anon, my second try to paint an orange in PS. A friend of mine says that it lacks volume and looks plastc. Any ideas how to improve it? Any tuts or books on improving this would be nice (if they exist)
>>2453792
Not enough contrast between dark/light.
dark side should also have different color. Also, no hilight and no boundary between light/dark.
"The Elements Of Drawing" is online somewhere where you learn to look at things and see their real colors. For imagination and more theory, see James Gurney, "Color and Light."
>>2453933
thanks! Do you mean "The Elements of Drawing" by John Ruskin?
>>2453968
yes
did this today
>>2449345
Why is this so underrated??
>>2448783
This is what I want to get more into. Keep going!
>>2454598
you can't just keep mixing colors with oil. get it right the first time or wait for it to dry so you dont end up with literally every different shade of feces in the rainbow.
Tiny watercolor sketch of the river in my city. I realised that I never painted outside before. Fun was had, so I'll continue. Any advice?
>>2454640
Its good to look at refs and just spamming them.
Maybe check out some "lighter" tutorials on youtube (say drawing with jazza maybe), that heavy reading from loomis and vilppu can become pretty hard. Just have fun and try to locate the misstakes yourself
>>2454640
>>2454650
wow that went really wrong
>>2454652
idk what these guys are complaining about. i think you have a great command of your materials. mixing paints until they are brown is an interesting choice, and shows maturity that you obviously know how to paint realistic colors but this is your new style. I think it looks really good. keep going!
>>2454532
Glad you think so, anon
>>2449345
I added a couple more sketches
>>2454745
you should add some pen or marker on top of it and define some lines in dark black. hints of what the lines for the fur would look like or define the features. that would elevate these for now they just seem like sketches but it wouldn't take much effort to make them drawings.
>>2454690

>>2454619
Wow. Perfect.
Trying to finish an oil portrait that was commissioned AGES AGO.
He has kind of a tight mouthed expression I initially found hard to grasp. Managed to turn a corner when I began mixing my linseed oil with more turpentine, so that I could work wet in wet longer.
I switched to small Cotman brushes because my oil brushes were losing shape. Painting with Lukas Oil paint.
>>2460239
It's really tacky and ugly. I hope he paid upfront or at least understood your aesthetic before commissioning you.
>>2448783
Mix in yacht varnish to speed up drying time, You can use it for glazing over colors to create interesting dialogues between layers of different colour
>>2460284
That's how a painting looks when it's being worked on, sonny.
>>2460316
Oh sorry, I didn't know before now.
>>2460318
I wouldn't give it to them like this!
Actually I don't expect any money from them at all, so they should be pleased that they got it for nothing.
Interested on what this board thinks
>>2460336
6ft x 4ft unfinished by the way
>>2460338
that's a big canvas
>>2460340
>for you
Size was important to get sucked into the perspective. Plus it's way more fun to paint on a large scale. It's for an exhibition too where big is fairly important.
It'll take up the whole wall even in a Georgian house so fuck knows who'll want it, probably just end up keeping it.
>>2460284
I actually like it like this. Tacky is good, too.
>>2460239
The fg is good, the bg is kind of terrible/half-assed. I would say, bad composition? It looks like you just tried to shove a lot of plants into it.
For the fg, the lights are inconclusive; if it was meant that way then it needs some work ut.
>>2460425
You're right, the background is somewhat cramped. It looks quite a lot like an exotic mall photograph. I'll have to darken most of the details in the background when I get a decent #0 brush.
The planes in the face are flat because I was using almost pure turpentine at the time... so they wouldn't mix and they would dry too fast. Don't make that mistake, kids!
It is a lot of fun to do and I'm just trying to say that anyone can do it, even if you're somewhat tacky or conventional. Try painting in the sunlight sometime!
>>2460336
Off balance. Not pleasant to look at.
>>2458674
HAHAHAHAHA get a load of this kid right here.
>>2457346
I agree with the other anon. Look up a reference for clouds and try not to keep your colors so muddy. If you're painting in acrylic, it's something to really watch out for. (Pic of acrylic painting, done by whoeveridk)

so why not just go out and meet a girl and have her model? its easy. you just go up and say can i draw you, then you draw one of those retarded symbol drawn asian faces you are so well known for instead of actually drawing her and BAM you've got a model.
>>2462739

>>2456870
Honey, you -are- a beginner. I could try and tell you that I'm anything but envious of whatever you shit out onto canvas, but I don't think you'd believe it. Just keep in mind that your current attitude is no good if you actually want to git gud some day. As you and your work are now, you'll never make any kind of impact you seem to so desperately want to make.
As I said before: everything is terrible.
Watercolor. I really like painting anything related to space
holy fuck chunbutt stop posting this crap all over ic your paintings are terrible and your women look the same. please just die already
Doing an oil painting of my cat :)
>>2463034
i like it but i feel like the stars are a bit too blobby. try to get better definition - most should be small points, only a few should have a lens flare effect or a big corona. you have the skills to do it clearly, but if it's a stylistic choice i have to disagree with it. also making the stars pure white doesn't really comport with reality (i mean, it sort of does but depending on the light wavelength stars tend to appear yellow or bluish in photos, and imo that makes a better painting too).
keep it up though, i'm also a sucker for space painting and would love to see more of your work.
>>2454477
Hand and head proportions are a bit off , otherwise its good i like it
>>2454477
i feel like the proportions are off but i'm not sure? the shoulders feel too narrow for how huge the arms and hands are.
the colors aren't my thing either but that's more >style than a real critique
>>2463241

>>2463280
>>2463383
proportions probably are off, i freehand measurements then render them as if they were correct. did the same thing for >>2456902
the goal is that i be able to freehand more accurately as i practice more and eventually don't need construction because i can just draw exactly what is in front of me. I'm just not that good at it yet though so usually something is off.
also i kind of wish he wore a different colored shirt the blue was a bit too chromatic even with the yellow light in the basement mixed into it.

>>2449861
Crit on what, exactly? Whether you are done or the composition?
I have been dabbling with acrylics and enjoy it.
I am getting better but notice I want to use acrylic mediums to extend working time and sometimes want things to remain wet longer,
should I just switch to oils before I invest more time with acrylics?
>>2471489
It's your call
Oils are pretty different from acrylics in terms of workflow, but they feel a lot nicer to use.
I personally hate working with acrylics, but some work exclusively in them.
Would love feedback. Acrylic on panel.
>>2474333
Lollipop/mint thing doesn't read properly with the hands. The face is too long even if you say it's due to stylization. I'd like to see more shadows on the frog, and a little bit more consideration for the lighting overall.
I like it a lot. Finish it.

Thanks so much for the feedback!! Glad you like it so far.
>want to get back into oil painting
>i get too anxious in the process
>never finish
have not painted in...about three years. i was absolutely mediocre though
if I truly wanted to get back into painting...which medium should I start with?
I've got oils, tempra, watercolor. Strapped for cash, so unfortunately, no acrylics for now.
i have some shit tier canvases that you buy in bulk from basic craft stores. i'd buy some wood and stretch my own (well if i weren't strapped), but I don't think I should delve into that for now as im just getting back in. but i don't think tempra nor watercolor are good mediums for those
I need everybody and anybody's harshest crit right now please!! This is my second go at an oil painting I just need to make it cohesive at this point. Not sure what highlight colors to do on the trees closest, what light to add to the background sky rectangle and any other suggestions!!! Pls help me not feel like this was a huge waste of time
>>2475064
if you can afford like 20 bucks you can buy a good sized sketchbook or paper pad for the water colors. water colors are nice because you do a bunch of quick sketches with them, or you can spend a lot of time and get something really detailed, or do something ultra stylized with just a few colors. working not on a canvas might help relieve some of the pressure as well, since you can tear the page out and toss it if you really hate it (at least, i feel a lot more relaxed painting studies/sketches on paper).
painting is a journey though, it can be stressful but just remember that every mistake is a step on the road of improving and getting better.
>>2454723
Funny how the early stage of this was so much better in my opinion. This is the one that looks incomplete
>>2475527
Work on your value. The trees closest to us could be darker and the light would play in and interesting way with the girls. Eh that sounds weird. Just work with the center light source and fix the value
Chunbum's is an odd style. You can tell he's experienced.
Kind of hard to understand why he's being surreal, but I feel something from his works.
>>2475594
for now im doing...tempra on...drawing paper.
i will move on to water color soon enough- i got a pad i can use.
and as for the thread- i did some basic profiling shit from imagination. im not as bad off as i thought i was but i still am mediocre
>>2476098
im looking forward to it
ever thought of implementing galkyd lite for the building? adds some gloss and transparency.
>>2475999
agreed with this. he definitely is not a beginner.
he has some good diversity amongst his work and the expression is amazing imo.
>>2476147
What? They all look the same, muddy colours in my opinion. Bland and boring, he should try and do something different

fine art, not even once
>>2477498
you should really try to be more delicate with the paint i just get the feeling you are ruining brushes by the minute.
if you are going to do impasto, do it in smaller strokes, and really try to lay and sculpt the paint on top of the underpainting. study van gogh's work.
for as vibrant and violent van gogh's stuff seems there is a really delicate touch to his work.
of course that means you'll have to get smaller brushes and palette knives and not do these giant brushstrokes but the end result will be much nicer. as it is you seem to be pushing all the paint into the paint below it and it all blends into a muddy mess
inb4 that's on purpose
>>2477498
i think you would have a better finished product if you gave your layers more time to dry in between painting. the bars look like garbage since they've mixed and while the main figure has definition there are certainly areas (some of the dots, the outline of her blouse) where the colors are mixing on canvas in a way that looks neither intentional nor pleasing to the eye.
i won't say i particularly like your style or direction, but if you insist on doing these sorts of paintings i think you could improve some technical aspects at least.
The backgrounds of Auerbach are much more powerful than yours.
His best works come off the canvas. Sometimes literally.
Suggestion if you're imitating him is to use light to a higher effect.

>>2477957
Also working on this one, I'm enjoying it but the jaw bone is a bit muddy, my initial sketch didn't translate it well and I'm painting using both my study and the model as my reference so I've got to change a few things here and there to get to a good middle ground. Still, its been a great learning experience and I feel like I'm improving my technique but I probably have to push the values on this one more, have to let it dry a little or else I'm just pushing around medium and getting nowhere.

>>2480281
don't do this, structure is everything
>>2480326
The structure is already fine, just re draw the bridge. You have to start adding detail even if it fucks up the painting just to know what the underlying structure should look like.

there's your problem
oil isn't like acrylics where you can make as many paintings

I don't like his paintings and I hate his style, but he also contributes and is, at the very least, true to what he believes. every time i see a chunbum painting I'm happy, even if only for a moment before i get triggered or panic about the thread going into a nosedive, because he is on his own path and refuses to let people knock him from it.
at the end of the day we all have to walk our own paths in life, no matter how much anyone else tells us otherwise. I appreciate chunbum sharing his journey with us, even if I wish every time i see his paintings that he'd go a different direction. and if he stays on his path, maybe he will or maybe he won't.

It's fine if you keep on your own path but you don't have to be a dick to people who genuinely try to help you and give you good advice. It's no secret that his work is absolute garbage and technically unsound. His attitude keeps him from ever improving but at the end of the day I couldn't care less and he's just a guy I enjoy to point at and laugh. Don't bite the hand that tries to feed you.

Seems like you just got butthurt and deleted everything yourself before even more people see it and have a laugh. I noticed it happened a few times before with your posts
>>2482730
I have no reason to lie. Also unless you're a janitor or mod one can not delete posts by others on 4chan. Mods only delete things if they are illegal or spam and your paintings, however horrible they are, did not break any of the rules. You're dumb.
