Do you charge for comissions 100% cost before you start work or are you 50/50?
>>
I hear nothing but horror stories about paying 100% before any work is done.

Most of the time the client is left waiting months later for their commission let alone sketches.
>>
>>2442980
I'm a 25/25/50 guy

Payment first before I start sketch, once approved and I proceed to rendering, I ask them for the next 25% and Ithe last remaining balance will be given before tI give them the hi-res.
>>
>>2442980
100% for anything below a price point, 50/50 if over. It works well so far. Also, you shouldn't take more than 3 commissions at a time, that's where all the horror stories came from. The artist is overwhelmed and end up burnt out and not finishing any commission at all.
>>
>>2443013
How the hell do you take money but not finish a commission?
>>
>>2442997
i can attest to that. paid and have waited a long ass time. about to ask for a refund.
>>
>>2443027
I don't do shit like that though. When the person pays in advance, I usually do it in priority as it genuinely fucks up your cash flow on the long run.
>>
>>2443015
By finishing it in few days and give the client WIPs. The first WIP is usually within few hours.
>>
>>2443015
Misread your q. Some artists just think they can get away with it, which some do.
>>
>>2443027
It's your own dumb ass fault for not negotiating a strict due date.
>>
I let my clients choose.
Most of the time they choose 100% since they wont have to wait on the final as I only send that after all the money is in.
>>
>>2443027
Who is the artist?
>>
>>2442980
I do a cheaper 100% or a bit more expensive 25,25,50
>>
full upfront always for everything.

the horror story then is that i actually still have to do the work even though i already got paid.

I'm batting in the 70-150$ league.
>>
>>2443089
i suppose. but still no excuse.
>>2443132
doesnt matter. i'll probably get them up on artist beware anyways
>>
>>2443276
Artist Beware doesn't scare any artists anymore if it ever did.
>>
Why are these people so retarded? I seriously need to start weeding out the crackpots.

Hurrdurr here is my commission backstory
[7 pages of text]. Okay so I want you to draw Razgul (called Jembo by his sister Ugra, but his feral form father calls him Krokris but Timmy when he is in his human form) from a top down perspective, as he is squishing Sonia (who Razgul calls Shaniqua, but she is known as Jennifer to Razguls feral form father) with his hands. Remember that at this point in the story Sonia is in her ethereal form. I want you to show the underpaw of Razgul, but still show Razgul from birds eye perspective. Razgul is using both his hands to squish. Then as he is squishing he also scratches his neck because it gets itchy. This is important to the story (he only has 2 hands wtf idiot)! Oh and I want you to show the squishing really upclose! But also Show Razgul from birds eye perspective. Oh and I want us to be able to see Razguls gaping asshole.

Jesus fucking christ never again.

Ive been doing around a commission a day for almost a year now and the worst thing is stuff like this where they list off tons of specific details that you can tell right away are not going to jive in one image. I used to pussyfoot around it but I've gotten to the point where I just draw what I think looks good and pop it over to them saying 'I couldn't make the blah blah work because' and they're cool with it.
I think some people are just enthusiastic and they don't think about how the picture actually works, which is annoying for the artist but ultimately fine because they'll understand the limitations once explained.

A commission a day? What kind of stuff do you do?

Is your sole income commissions?
>>
>>2443657
yes
>>2443616
a comfortable living amount, planning on buying a house soon
>>
>>2442980
When I did commissions I charged the full amount up front. But I also tried not taking on more clients at a time then I could handle and had a "if not done by 40 days => automatically full refund" policy. If I ever do commissions again, it will be the same drill, worked for me.

>comissioner agrees to sketch
>ink/flat/shade/etc.
>100% comission money

anyone that does it anyother way is a fool
>>
>>2443761

but a while ago you said you took around 2 days per commission, and you were working a part time job on the side. i am confuse.
>>
>>2443777
I think I remember the thread you're talking about

He takes "2" days as in he does all his sketches for comissions that week on day and finishes one or 2 out of those on another.

It only takes gabe 5-8 hours to finish one comission depending on the complexity, amount of characters etc.
>>
>>2443766
At least your showing your work to the client. A lot of artists seem to be asking for the money upfront before ANY sketches.
>>
The only thing I do before the payment is a rough figure sketch to make sure what the client wants can even be done. Then payment before any more work goes into it. I take a lot of 'reservations' for commissions but the second I ask for payment and get paid I work on the image. A lot of clients tell me that it's not unusual to be kept waiting for a couple of weeks after paying, I would not stand that.
>>2443766
>>2443766
That's what I used to do until the third time I spent hours in a drawing just to have the commissioner suddenly stop responding after giving them the lineart. I realize asking for all the payment upfront is not very fair but I'm the one waisting hours for no money if I don't. Most of my clients are regulars so it's not usually a problem for them.
>>
After getting scammed once I demand 100% upfront. But it's not like my commissions are that expensive so they're fine with it.
>>
Considering looking for an artist to do some CG's for an action hentai game.

What should I be afraid of ?
>>
>>2444906
Paying 100% upfront for EVERYTHING, slow working time EI taking months/weeks for 1 image.
>>
>>2442980
i love this genetically engineered nipponese dog.
>>
50/50 is fair to both parties, even if you get ripped off at least you got half - seems suitable to get 50%, show them your sketch or a low res version, then give the full version on the final payment.

Sadly, I've seen far too many complete fucking retards who take on too many commissions/come up with excuses/etc to at all sympathize with artists expecting full payment in advance. What I hate most is these artists always frame themselves as the victims - even worse when they spend the money before its done and lament that they're incapable of refunding it if circumstances genuinely make it so they can't complete it. They seem as common as people trying to get free art and not paying.
Sadly there are enough irresponsible artists out there to completely justify wary clients.
