I don't know man, I'm really just trying to get better at coloring. Right now I just gave myself some structure to build on. Once I have the basic direction for the color I can define things better and fix shit like the bag. I just wanted to save that effort for the color because I always run out of steam too fast if I put all the work into the lineart.

Duude, she looks really old. Like a mom version of Max. Its all the little suttle choices you made but the outfit especially. Give her hair less of an 80s volume and her crotcch and nose less definition.
the coloring looks fine I guess, but I'd say that the pants are too reddish in the middle in the lit area
Also frontal lighting like that isn't normally desired. Try moving the light sources over to the right or left.
The linework looks good, just the actual way you represented her I just can't stand it man.

what i'm doing isn't necessarily preparing me for the stuff you'd like to do, but i think a little ( even if its just a little) life drawing everyday would help you with your line quality and values. on top of that you should find some illustrators or comic artists you enjoy and do studies of their work. right now I'm doing one bargue plate, some figure drawing, and a page of hands everyday. if you replaced the figure drawing and bargue plate with two studies of a comic panel or illustration you like, and then maybe did a small page of hands everyday i think you'd see a lot of improvement. study for what you want to do my schedule wouldn't work for your art based on what you already make and what you probably WANT to make, but i don't think your regimen should be much different than mine. just sub in traditional studies for digital studies with some life drawing mixed in.

the shapes and line work are nice, sort of reminiscent of zedig. it's hard to critique the composition because there's nothing happening in the picture. i'm not sure what you want to say with it, what you want to show the audience, what you want the audience to feel, so it's tough to make any worthwhile comments beyond fitting the elements of the image into composition guides (rule of thirds, golden rectangle, etc.) consider adding some sort of narrative to the drawing.

pic is an illustration by thierry martin, similar to yours in that it's just a character in the woods but what makes it great, in my opinion, is the subtle narrative. there's nothing really going on, it's just a fox walking through the woods, but you still feel a sense of adventure, like you're in the woods too.
>>
>>2442070

It looks like you're using a relatively soft brush to do everything, so it looks pretty muddy for everything. Not that a soft round or other brushes can't be used for some blending and texture work, but the default hard round in PS should be your main brush for your base work.

As for hair, this is an eternal debate between a friend of mine and I...but she'd probably comment that you're over-rendering it. Personally, I'd just go back to the "you're using really muddy brushes" thing.

Also, fire is predominantly white, with accent colors on the edges, This kinda looks like a bunch of yellow and red wisps in a cluster. Try making a general white shape and then adding the yellow and reds on the edges.
>>
>>2442242
Oh wow, you found me out. I've been injecting Zedig straight into my veins lately, and the picture itself is something that popped into my head when I was browsing his tumblr for the 100th time. It's a little frustrating because at the moment I'd like to stylistically achieve the same things as him (I'm sure that's only temporary though)

Anyway, I did try to draw out a narrative, which will maybe work out better when I eventually add colours. The mushrooms are supposed to be highlighted compositionally (being in the very front) while the figure will be highlighted with light and vibrant colour, hopefully connecting the two. The figure is supposed to be a gatherer, of mushrooms obviously. If it doesn't work tho I should rethink it.

I really like the pics, gonna look more into him.

You should be focusing on making the mom pretty, and then you add some slight changes to her expression to make her ambiguously creepy.
You're definitely in the right direction showing the white of the eyes and the big smile, but you rendered her face like she was a monster, and if it's not ambiguous, it just looks tryhard.

Check out this creepy motherfucker Coca-Cola had as a mascot. Look at how his face was drawn just like they drew cute kids, with rosy cheeks and all, and then the fucking creepy eyes, with creepy wrinkles, and the creepy eyebrows. I think you should be aiming for this kind of less obvious uncanny valley to get the results you are going for.
>>
>>2442243
Ive used the soft brush for blending, but hard brush somewhere, like the eyebrows and eyes, and the hair too. I use a low opacity though, could that be it?

Struggling as always.
I feel my ability to draw from imagination slowly improved over time. however the consistency of structure is none. Everything looks floating around, not fixed correctly. I keep misplace eyes, draw huge nose, neck is too long... whether from imagination or not. the transition between observation and memorization is messed up.
I heard that, not using construction line helps, or drawing upside down helps... trying out all sort of things. any recommendation would be great.

Man it looks nice but the shadows can still go darker and most of all make some of the shadow edges less soft, all your shadows edges are soft, adding hard shadow edges can make it look much cooler, especially on the face.
>>
>>2442471
Spoopy stuff anon, nice work. But as the other guy said the expression is weird. Also if he's supposed to be hanging then consider slumping the torso and head forward while keeping hands back only maybe I'd put them a bit higher, right now the pose doesn't look like anything, maybe like he's floating but even that's not very obvious, he's just sort of there.

how can you see his expression in the thumbnail? That's practically impossible

>>2442554
Thanks dude. It's not photobashed at all, i think what makes it look like that is the edges, i have the guy on the top layer, and sometimes mark the layer to darken certain parts with the soft round brush, photoshop tends to leave kind of a white crust of pixels along the marked area when you do that.

Or maybe it's just because he's b/w and the bg is solid color. I have a couple of skinny refs if you want them?

>The figure is supposed to be a gatherer, of mushrooms obviously
nice!! yeah, it's always good to add a bit of context to a scene when asking for critique, because it doesn't read very well from what you have here. especially in the second pass where the mushrooms are the same value as the rest of the foreground, it gave off the impression that you /didn't/ want the audience to pay attention to them.

i think the main issue here is in the ambiguity of the character's intent. he really just looks like a figure standing in the woods here, not like he's there to gather anything. i feel a change in prop would help greatly here. the walking stick only serves to push the point that he's just out for a stroll; replace it with a sickle or some other tool for gathering and his reason for being in the woods is immediately made clear, there's no question. as far as gathering mushrooms go, clarifying the character's eye direction would help a lot. right now it feels like he's just staring off into space, having him focus on the mushrooms, alongside the gathering tool in his hand, would leave no room for doubt in his intentions.

and zedig's good!! he's a good artist to be inspired by, his colours and shape design are really interesting. i'm sure you're familiar with his "i'm lookin' for" series? it's a good exercise in character design, a lot of the characters that came out of it were well defined by their props and silhouette. for this illustration, it might help to think of your character as a "i'm lookin' for mushrooms" kind of character, and basing his design around that. in my drawing on the right, i just thought to make his silhouette similar to the mushrooms in the foreground, to imply some sort of connection from the shape alone. a little lazy, but i'm not much of a designer anyway lol. just really try and push your designs to make them as clear as possible.
>>
>>2442684
also, on the topic of shape design and silhouettes, i blacked out your illustration (pic related, the one on the left) and you might notice that the mushrooms don't read very well. bringing at least one up above the hill and away from the tree so it stands as its own shape will make it pop a lot more and give it more importance. contrast is a very strong tool for making something look important, so bringing it out and away from everything and literally putting it on a pedestal is a good way to draw attention to something.

I don't think that's good advice, actually. You are plenty able to draw a character. You're already started designing for a comic, don't stop now. Go through with it to a decent extent.

However, if your characters are samey as other guy says, it means you should employ more reference/do more research, and more time in the thinking stage of doing your designs.

Try to imagine how a better version of yourself thinks, designs, and goes about in creating. Maybe you know you should be working some way, but aren't. I'm telling you this now as I don't want you to be led off your track. Doing fundamentals and studies can only bring up the quality of anyone's actual work so much. They can't fix issues in people's work and habits that were never about fundamentals in the first place. So, focus your efforts now on becoming a better designer, not a better artist.

I didn't want to get involved but I was thinking all of this >>2442172 A lot of artists and other entrepreneurs say "don't wait". You learn how to do it by doing it and you'll learn more by trying and failing than trying to be perfect before putting it into practice. In my limited experience it seems to hold true. But really I just wanted to say you probably shouldn't listen to Brian anyway. Not long ago in some thread he was telling people not to worry about construction and perfect anatomy and to just try to make nice pieces yet in this thread he told you the exact opposite. I wouldn't put much stock in someone giving advice that's all over the map, not to mention the other things he does to make me doubt his credibility. You still have a lot of issues to work out that would make your art more appealing but overall I think you working on a project is reasonable.

If you mean by that, I've been drawing female faces only. It became my biggest weak point. I can't draw male faces without looking gayish sissy. I suspect samefacing problem also came from this habit. I gotta work hard to deal with this.

>>2442925
I think you need to plan out your values better. Simplify things, group things together that belong together. There is so much contrast in the foreground ship for example that it becomes a jumble of disassociated shapes, rather than a single object.

There is also a lack of hierarchy between the two ships. The far ship has nearly as much contrast as the foreground ship. Things in the distance usually don't have black tones on them.

The face in yours is considerably better, but the waistline is still unnaturally sharp and there is still more you can do to clean up the skin. You also have a lot of jagged and rough edges, and spots you left unfinished. Lighting is also almost porn-like, too saturated and warm.

>>
>>2442925
About making ships look big, it's about the texture detail too. You need to give it a lot of tiny volumes - it's unlikely that a ship that huge has completely smooth surfaces

it looks like a toy this way

You can get away with the smaller ship because it's one-man sized, reminiscent of UFOs perhaps, and yet still, it has more complex form than a ship that is, what, a thousand times bigger? (i am talking about the behind ofthe smaller ship, it is much more complex than the entirety of the big one - very unlikely for this to happen)

It's not very appealing. Looking at the thumbnail I thought it would be a bad beginner drawing with chicken scratch everywhere, mostly because of the old man who looked deformed, with an crooked hat, shield and staff.
But once I opened the image... there is just not much to work on. There is nothing that really looks off, except for the old man's arm? But even then it's a sketch so rough I can't tell. They are just rough sketches of faces and they look ok and that's it really. What were you expecting

Exactly, tracing would defeat the point, but this sketch is pretty good, that's why I asked.
Also, I will never guess this weeaboo shit, but I want to say, I noticed the woman to the right is asian, and now that you said I get an asian vibe from the guy on the left, but the girl in the middle doesn't look asian at all. I keep thinking she looks like Zooey Deschanel
>>
>>2444871
Haha, wouldn't call it weeaboo shit honestly.

And yea, getting the likeness of any of them for me is super tough, my eye isn't good enough to get to that stage yet.
The women in the middle has her eyes open wider than usual in that shot so kind of betrays some of that asian vibe you would get, but yea the likeness is off itself and the asian features that you can see I didn't capture that well if at all.
I'll continue adjusting as I'm painting, hopefully get them all a bit closer.
