Style would just come to you as you get further into mastering fundamentals, like how one would add bits of other stuff that isn't in the recipe into a dish they're cooking once they already know how the food's supposed to "feel". And like >>2440441 said, it comes naturally.
The whole thing is a process, and you can't really get it in one try; you add into it little-by-little every once in a while throughout the years, so you can say it's a "technique portfolio" of sorts that showcases the accumulating methods you've adapted to your work.

I actually draw in a lot of styles, and I really like that, the only problem is that sometimes you need to do somewarm ups when going for a style u dont use for a long time, like, your drawing realistic for 1 month studying, than tries somethings with anime, its hard to get in the grips again.

Does anyone have any advice as to how to stylize my drawings? Is it ever too early to try something like this? Is it possible to appropriate Loomis techniques into this kind of art style? Is jumping in and having a go a good idea?
>>
>>2441644
Post work so we can judge if it's too early or not. Yeah, you can apply methods and patterns from stuff like Loomis to stylized drawings, to an extent. The methods/simplified structure you use in stylized work might differ in some ways but the core truths you learn will probably still apply.

This is my most recent drawing. I was too careless with the lines, the eyes are about 2cm above where they should be and there are a few issues with the neck and mouth too. The painting was the first time I had done anything of the sort, and I probably won't try it again until i can consistently draw without the above issues. Is it too early for me to start stylizing?

Stop giving bad advice. There's always room for improvement.
>>2440048
You're off to a good start, but there are a few issues. The overall impression I get when I look at this is that it's very flat. There's not much to suggest the illussion of depth. Varying your line weight, avoiding tangents and making use of overlapping shapes might help with that. Also, the head jets forward to much. The neck should attach to the center of the sphere of the head.
Take this critique with a grain of salt. Hope it helped.

you're still mapping 2d, that's just a single skill just like bouncing a ball in basketball...

If you want to learn art, start studying the theory of fundamentals and then practice each of them from ground to roof

You can do simple 2D cartoons at any level, but for cool stylizations you need way better foundations and knowing what form is

Don't practice painting before practicing values (3-4 tones only)

It's not flat in values. It's flat literally. You draw a plane flat as a pancake and you do it right.
To me it looks like you really enjoy Wokada's style, or learned from her, or whateve, i used to think you were wokada and i don't enjoy that face style. Not one bit.

If you wanna try different face, consider protrusion of facial structures forvard, the jaws, rhe nose make face more like a nose of a ship, go google for anime figurine photos and study them a bit.
Often animu faces have a more protruding shape, as well as a shape of 3dpd human is not a single plane.

Looking for some help on this drawing, I've been erasing and redrawing the same things over and over. I feel like there's a whole lot "off" about it and I jumped to rendering way too quickly, but I want this to be completed. If you have any advice/help, it would be much appreciated.

I'm really not feeling the shading. The sudden harsh shadow along the outside of the hair doesn't look right, it needs to be more diffuse. The shading around the nose ends at a harsh line despite it being a rounded form.

The shading also suggests a convex curve to the bridge as opposed to a concave. Also her left eye is looking a little droopy towards the outter edge, this time a concave curve along the upper lid instead of a convex one as her other eye suggests. It's a lot of little things here and there that look off.

Are you working with reference? what i'm posting isnt particularly helpful for shading reference. but maybe itll help you work on the anatomy a little.

same shit, low contrast.

Take a look at a proper anime picture, each hair "blade" has it's contrasty shadow and it's hilight.
The skin has high contrast shadow, your picture barely has ony contrast.
So yes, use wider value range.
Don't be afraid to make your shadows deeper, and your hilights brighter. Overdoing it will be better than not doing it.

you don't seen to care too much about where does the light come from the green dude has a shadow on a lit side of his nose.

>>
>>2445978
Your construction seems a bit weak and you rely everything on the same 3/4 symbols/proportions you've learned to do.

If you want to mimic a style, make a reference window with few references of the style you want and take a close look on how each thing is solved, so you can take what you want.

Right pic got really high color contrast, highly saturated versus non saturated contrasts and just a few high value contras, degradations, line weigh and color variation.

Make things bold.

Yeah, I honestly had no idea where to put the lighting for a composition that's supposed to be like a poster, so I just did something dynamic. Maybe I'll recolor it, but desu, I think I'd rather be done with it and just do something else.

>>2446005
Haha, yeah, I could have, and I noticed that mistake as I painted it, but it seemesd like too much work and I lost the original file, so I had to paint the jpeg on multiply.

Anyway, got something new:

This is my MC for a comic I'm doing. It's a ghost detective kinda story, that draws some inspiration from Bakemonogatari, except that it's more ghost story, and less romcom.

I also want it to be a blend of grungy, punky, underground London counter culture. Thoughts on the design?

I feel like I should do a little more to give it a bit more draw. Something about the design is a bit boring to me.

To give you an idea on the sorta style I wanna convey, here's my visual inspiration mash ups.

The idea is to do a blend between a ghost detective noir kinda thing, with hard punk and grunge culture, etc... kinda like how Bebop blended space cowboys with jazz, or Champloo did with Feudal Japan and hip-hop.

I do want the characters to be drawn in that realistic style though. The MC is a bit of a hipsterish douche. The two other MCs kinda show a bit more variety in style, especially Reika who's a more of an edgy, grungy chick. I haven't finished their design yet though.

I would move on from this pic. It is quite hard to look at, and has a lot of construction issues. Looking at things to fix straight away there's a number of anatomy issues. For example the deltoids aren't structured on his torso properly. His obliques definitely don't work that way, given the position the left should be lower and creased where as the right flank should be higher. His Balance seems off, I would shift the left leg a bit more left. Also the right knee doesn't feel positioned right judging from the foot, should be more centred. It's a bit scary anon.

Make it wiiiider maybe

The face features placement is a bit meh, I'd see the mouth higher, the face less long and more wide

Also the eyes are too "hard", there isn't the kind of softness, flow in the strokes that you can see in right pic

The color of your lines seems bland too, look his lines have gradients and all

Also work your colors overall

The sketch looks so loose and under-detailed and fast (which isn't a bad thing), so I'm kind of baffled it took that long. Is there a lot of construction underneath in a hidden/deleted layer? If that's where most of the time goes in, then I'd suggest sketching a lot more fast gestures and doing quick studies from refs with a short time limit.

>[beginner critique - you can see it as a critique from a possible fan/viewer rather than a professional artist, maybe this insight can help you]

The left hand's thumb has the skin wrinkle going towards the palm that's way too deep, it makes it look like the thumb is 2x the size because of this - also the fingers of the same hand look slightly bigger and fatter.

The right breast looks unnatural, and it took me time to figure out what was breast and what was strand of hair - the breast shouldn't pop up like a baloom on the armpit side, the upper line should graciously curve toward the armpit - this looks like her tits have received a bad boobjob

Great bg but that tree or rod that looks to be a gathering point looks like shit.. is it actually going to be emitting light? is that why you drew that circle?

the (I'm assuming) strip of trees right above that sphere look too artificial, same lineweight and too crowded, makes it look almost like a gate rather than trees in the background, looks a little too nearly arranged

The notes look a little boring because they are going in too straight a line. Maintaining that flow is good, but maybe break them up vertically a tiny bit, I think it'll be an improvement

The one thing that bugs me about the foreground, is that on the right you just have a bunch of grass. Maybe have some flowers or more mushrooms? It looks really cheap IMO. Those mushrooms are great though.

But it's great, hope I'll be as good as you one day

I had no intension of drwing a detailed background, i believe depth of field is a legit tool to both save time, lots of time, and to focus on central elements.

This time i was simply not going to draw a complete picture with detailed background, i i believe that blurred room is better than white or gradient backdrop.

This is really good critique man, I really appreciate you taking the time to give such a thorough look over. I'm still touching up the lineart and starting the values, so I'll take all of your suggestions into account. And yeah, the sphere in the back is meant to be emitting light.

The concept for the painting comes from the MGMT song "Electric Feel."

It's meant to be Euterpe, the muse of music, following up from the lyrics of the song: "standing there with nothing on, she's gonna teach me how to swim/she got the power in her hand, will shock you like electric eel"

The setting is inspired by the video's visuals.
