When writing stories I'm okay with writing characters and I can be very descriptive with setting, but I really struggle deciding on a setting when the story is grounded in the real world. I'm currently writing a script for a comic taking place in the United States about 20 years after the beginning of the Vietnam war. Drawing a lot of influences from things like Hotline Miami and Mirror's Edge, in terms of plot and aesthetic(leaning more toward, with the free running of ME). Somewhere with moderately tall buildings and a lot of tight spaces. I also wanted to blend religiously inspired architecture with 80s lights and the sort. Palm trees optional. Basically I need a city. I'm hesitant to use places like Miami, LA, NY, just because I feel like I could do better. What're some places that'd make a good setting for this kind of story? What are some real places you'd like to see in fiction?
