currently looking to buy a mannequin to help practice drawing bodies.

any reason to get a nicer one than a $4 one off ebay?
>>
I bought one of those a few years ago. It's just an ornament now, I never use it.
>>
>>2433006
not useful, but its nice I guess to have just to stand there and look pretty, like figurines
>>
dont even think about it. an ipad app offers much more versatility than of one these things. i had one , was so excited. literally never used it for two years now. same with the hand. i only use it for its middle finger to piss my mudslime brother.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZeI914hM2s

get yourself that app. if you have the air ipad. its great. fine for mini. even if you dont then there are pc alternatives.
>>
>>2433006
No, they're all pretty much the same.

>>2433018
>>2433025
You guys apparently just don't know how to use them, then. Mannequins are for when you want to draw a certain pose without a model or gathering a ton of refs. Their main purpose is for figuring out difficult foreshortening or making sure you're using a normal range of motion in the limbs (i.e. no broken limbs or misplaced joints)
Gesture knowledge should be used along-side them to push the pose into something more pleasing to look at.

Professionals use them all the time, they aren't useless trinkets, just a tool that you tools didn't bother to learn how to use. ;)
>>
See >>2428713

There is already a thread.
>>
>>2433058
>Professionals use them all the time
No they don't. They're for beginners struggling with basic poses/perspective. If you're past beginner level they won't help you with anything.
>>
>>2433066
Prove it, faggot. Show us your work, oh great one. You must be a master artist if you never need help with deep perspective or lighting. Or are you buttmad from being called a tool?

There are a lot of other people that say otherwise, even professionals with manikins on their desks for the occasional reference. Again, it's just a tool. Whether you decide to utilize it or not is your choice but don't push your shit opinions on everyone else. Let them know what the purpose is and let them decide for themselves, control freak.

I must give you a little info before you preorder just in case.

Pro: They are VERY poseable and the poses hold in spot so they are great for drawing and trying to poses.

Con: They are only 6" so they aren't that big, just be wary of that so when you buy it you don't think it was suppose to be like 9".
>>
>>2433934
Good luck finding the Pink one, it's out of print and unless you want to pay $150+ you won't find him new. Might as well just preorder both the new grey ones, save money.
>>
>>2433058
Pros rarely use them. While you make a good point about the potental use for them for certain angles and what not, the fact still remains that they aren't really enough, sometimes they can be inaccurate and give the wrong idea instead, and evertime i've ever bought or been given one, it sits around, I forget to use it because refs or using the mirror are better (or making my fiance pose. seriously guys get hitched, free modeling!) which I think is what the other anons meant too, it's just noit useful enough .
>>
>>2433076
No seriously why are you so mad about the mannequins?
>>
>>2433058
>or making sure you're using a normal range of motion in the limbs (i.e. no broken limbs or misplaced joints)

Have you ever used one of those things? The articulation is trash and doesn't model a human range of motion at all.
>>
>>2433936
>out of print
Unless they're 3D printed that isn't the right phrase.
>>
Buy an Obitsu body. Parabox is the US retailer I believe. The 27cm (about 10 inches, so a Barbie's size) bodies are in the $18-$25 range and are extremely poseable. They move like a human, not rigid like one of the mannequins you posted. I wouldn't recommend buying one of the heads just because they're pretty anime styled, so they're lacking in details. It'd be cheaper and efficient to do head modeling either using yourself or using photo refs.
>>
>>2433921
everyone's a little bit gay anon. There are worse things then being gay for a very effeminate polynian.
>>
>>2433936
holy god damn mother bitch I check it out, its all scalpers, 200$ bucks, yea fuck it, w/e I can wait if they're in demand, I better buy grayscale before thats sold out on amiami
>>
>>2433957
Really, scalpers kill stonedead most nice this. Look at figmas, after they are sold out online the prices on eBay go from $60 to $130.
>>
>>2433957
That's the best option, pay the $50 MSRP and preorder the one you want. The thing with Polynians is once they are sold out or out of preorders that's it. Can only get them eBay or whatever after.
>>
>>2433957
You might be better off buying it now if it's not going to be made again.

What they'll do is release new colors every year or something, they are very unlucky to reprint. It's hard to say if grey scale will be sold out, just think of this now. If you preorder you don't pay until June anyway.

Shit son, just find your favorite action figure from when you were a child and dunk it in some paint to cover the unnecessary details.

Chances are, if you liked playing with it often, it will have a decent range of motion for poses and the proportions/anatomy couldn't be any worse than those wooden piles of garbage hack art teachers get for their bullshit classes.

Those wooden posing dolls never give you the pose you want. There are better dolls with more articulation but honestly you're better off getting Daz Studio and using it as a reference even if you're not doing digital drawings.

Useless to be honest,

Once you are at the level where you can use them properly you already know how to invent poses in space

If you cant invent poses properly in space you wont be able to properly transfer the pose you are trying to get out of the doll onto the canvas anyway

That being said I bought a 3000 yen anatomy doll before and it was been of some help since you can touch it and feel the simplified 3d forms of the human body which is a lot more convenient then touching real people to properly understand the subtle changes when the body transitions from the front plane to the side plane for example

Posing with figures is great and all but has any one figured out how to put clothing on them?
>>
>>2435708
>not having a cute robot boy next to you while doing a lewd pose while you draw
"what are u fucking gay?"
>>
>>2436983
I mean, barbies and g.i. Joes are a thing, you could probably just finagle clothes on them.
>>
>>2437011
I have a hard time drawing dresses because of the limited references I have (Or more likely I'm too lazy to go out and find them).

Instead of getting a girl to pose for you I figured having a posing doll, especially the ones from Japan, can make more life a lot easier.
>>
>>2435992
This thing is fucking awesome, but I can't find many good examples of how it poses. Is it any good?

Also the female one kinda sucks.
>>
>>2437021
The problem is that doll clothing doesn't really behave like real clothing. The forces and area are small while the cloth itself is still the same thickness. It's like if everything you wore was as thick as neoprene. The wrinkles are few and huge and don't conform to the body as much.

Might I suggest this book instead: http://www.amazon.com/Dynamic-Wrinkles-Drapery-Solutions-Drawing/dp/0823015874
>>
>>2437029
Thanks but that was the first solution I looked into and although it contains good information, I can't seem to apply that to figures in imagination.

I guess I'll use bedsheets and wrap them around my body. I'll look at myself in front of a mirror and try to analyze how gravity affects the drapery.
I even dabbled in the 3D realm. Playing with Daz studio and marvelous designer. Cool, but not really reliable. Something seems off.
Other software such as Poser and Zbrush gave me mixed results.
If only there was some program that simulate cloth physics, especially when it comes to clothing.

I use a free virtual one I downloaded to my tablet - its called Woodenman on the google market (android)

Does the job and you can save the poses you set up for later reference
>>
>>2433006
It's fine. Them ost use you get out of them is solving foreshortening and light problem, and helping out your imagination with having a solid body in front of you that you can rotate, touch and see in 3d.

People who say it's not useful try to copy them to make the exact same poses.
>>
It's better to just learn to visualize the figure but mannequins can be an ok crutch.

Its almost like having a small human at your desk. It looks really natural except for some poses. Its more useful then one would think.

Ach, I usually don't dig most mannequins (other then those vintage looking ones that just look good on the shelf), but I kinds want one of these... I've seen some demonstrations and the joints seem to bend surprisingly good and naturally on this despite the bulky build.
>>
>>2433006
These are not used for pose study or alike, they are stiff as fuck. Its just to give you an idea of how you should simplify the human body in your head. Useless by now, but they look pretty in your desk, get a cheap ass one, move it to random pose and completely forget about it.
>>
>>2433861
but then whenever i want to draw i will just end up jacking off instead
>>
>>2435878
I've collected toys forever and very few old toys had any sort of decent articulation.
Old Barbie-size GI Joes, Action Man, the Saint Seiya line with die-cast armors and Marvel Legends are the only human-shaped toys with decent range of motion you're likely to have gotten as a kid. Small Joes and original Power Rangers are better than the mannequin, but not by much.

Then we go into scalpershark territory with stuff like Micromen, Marvel Universe, Figmas, latex customizable dolls and ball-jointed dolls. Where geting anything good will bite your wallet real hard.

I don't think you need a mannequin, I'm studying concept art at an art school and we never used mannequins. The best suggestion from professionists is using A LOT of reference (looking at yourself at the mirror or ask a friend to pose for you for 15-20 mins for quick sketches) and anatomy books. There is no fast metod to learn, you need to draw all the day long, all the day and you'll master it.
