Bring us your roughs, your storyboards, your pencil tests etc. Talk about industry, schools, the hopelessness of it all, how we all gonna make it etc.
If you're gonna post animation that isn't yours give source or state that it isn't yours.
Keep shitposting to a minimum. Don't feed the trolls.

what does the A/B B/IE mean?
>>2431302
Layer A is the male and layer B is female. K for key, BD for breakdown/passing position, IB or IBTWN for inbetween, and E for extremes. Thats how I work, my bad anon
i definitely need to animate more. line work and consistency is by far what I need to work on the most.
nice smoke by the way.

bouncing ball in perspective
boat on a wave
walk cycle (front and side)
emotional sack
Are there any good blogs for tips and tricks with TVpaint?
Also, are there any books that teach you more practical ways to animate? Richard Williams made a decent manual, but expecting one person to animate a whole feature on 1's using the techniques in that book isn't very realistic.
>>2431948
too slow.
work on the timing.
>>2431948
this is shitty as fuck.
Why you guys almost NEVER try to learn how to draw before animating?
Holy shit this is awful. what's the point of making an animation when it looks like shit?
>>2431490
No, timing is probably your biggest flaw - imagine your shot like a piece of music - usually for it to be interesting, you want variation in intensities, holds/pauses, places where it's faster, bigger, smaller, etc. I can watch your shot and basically tap out an extremely even rhythm for the whole thing. For animation this is a bad sign.
>>2431804
one tip i can give you is don't always animate on 1s like he says; it doesn't even make it look better most of the time, look at the examples in the book's cd and you can see how sometimes it leads to an undesireable watery appearance
>>2431948
There is a nice feel to this, if I imagine it far, far faster. Make it much faster and also add a proper anticipation for the jump. Think about where his jumping force is coming from.
>>2431948

>>2431993
>>2431951
:D
this is missing a few frames, so dusn't loop as well as i thought it would
>>2432087
Yeah, I've figured that much out. Usually faster movements can be eased in on 2's where the meat of the action will be on 1's, where slower actions can be on 2's and 3's with a few 1's thrown in if the action doesn't look terribly nice. Still it would be nice having a little more guidance on the subject of practical animation. The Preston Blair sort of touches on it towards the end, but really doesn't go as in depth as I would like. Is also imagine just knowing the software a little better could cut back the work load, but I'm new to TVP and there isn't much I have found on it.
You should add this channel to the copypasta.
It covers most of the basic topic a Japanese animator needs to know.

Is Animate CC actually good now? I tried using ToonBoom but the interface is just abysmal. I don't mind drawing in Photoshop, but I feel like it's kind of the ghetto option. Like, I don't think it'd be a skill I could actually apply in any professional capacity.
Plus, having vector graphics would make life easier in some cases.
>>2433915
Here's someone comparing the brush in Flash vs. the brush in Animate. They've finally improved that, at least.
>>2434035

I figured since the cape would be heavier and is bigger than the whatever-dress-thing Mojo wears, it would have double the amount of drawings. But does it look like the same wind draft or like his upper and lower body are in two different dimensions? Should I have timed them to flow up and down exactly the same?

No, you have to make the dude stop for a longer time, so people can realise there is the cat, I had to watch it three times to see what happened. You kinda have 2 things going on at the same time there and it's confusing. Make the dude stop after he steps on the cat, let people realise what happened, then the cat should become the focal point, it jumps up and it has to charge the jump so people can expect it and the dude should be taking the steps back really slowly. The last part, the jump and running away is imho great and it's pretty funny.

What do you mean how do you animate 'like this?' Fluid animation is fluid animation, the video you posted is really jerky at a lot of points anyway. Like >>2436615 wrote, it's mostly rotoscoped anyhow.
Many Japanese youtube/niconico animators use unconventional programs for animation, like SAI or Photoshop (though Photoshop has become more animator-friendly in recent years). They basically just use whatever they would normally use to draw and compile the frames in a different piece of software afterward.
>>2435909
gonna piggy back off this guys' reply as it's pretty reasonable.
what I'd recommend as well, would be to add a couple seconds of just the case in the scene. That way, a viewer is going to first notice the cat, then the man. If the man starts off in frame and moving, it brings the viewer's attention to him, making the cat invisible until he actually steps on it (provided you followed the advice I replied to, otherwise viewers might not ever fully know about the cat scenario). Use the tail flick animation a couple times in the moments leading up to the man entering, so the viewer has motion to bring their attention to the cat as well. Add a second or two of the guy realizing that he's stepped on the cat as well, then have him start backing away. Maybe have him initially recoil (prompt by cat noises after stepping on it), then acknowledge there's a cat.
Overall, it's a great concept and decent art. I really like it.

>>2431993
>>2432653
>>2438769
Drawing for a illustration is entirely different from drawing for an animation. Simplicity is more important than complexity. Not only to ease your workload, but so teams can work on the project easily. We've been all spoiled from watching animated content where people from different fields refine and clean the frames.
The crucial part is the timing and cinematography, not how detailed or defined each frames are. In theory, focusing on detail is important, but in reality you'll lose motivation and time before you reach a substantial amount of frames.
You can't work hard because we're all burdened by financial and time constraints that prevent us from doing so. You have to work smart instead. Think realistic instead of idealistic.
Animation is a collaborative effort instead of solo one for a reason, it's very tough to execute well without cutting corners. So please be lenient on those who do it solo.
>>2434126
It's super tough to balance them together.
>>2438784
Animation is unsuited for a chan board format. Not because of the community, but because threads go too fast. Good animations take a lengthy amount of time, like weeks and months.

>It's why there's a lot of shitposting here.
You could still do roughs and talk about animation. Doing complete animations from the go instead of 10 minutes scribbling are completely different and a lot of roughs are thrown away. This is similar to the gesture stuff some anons talk always about (and IIRC some even call it gesture here.)
Where I am coming from: "Simplified Drawing for Planning Animation" (replaces in no way a book like "The Animator's Survival Kit, but has a lot of important practical stuff you don't normally find in books and which is a must.)

It's pretty awesome how the bouncing ball works for every action that involves elevation. I studied a backflip a year ago and realized that it was slower when it's close to it's maximum height.

thats fantastic senpai, all I'd say is try to make it even more "flour sack" like, as in, think of the contents shifting around inside it with the movements
>>2439917
The head needs to be bouncing up and down. Try running across the room and focus on how your head moves. It'll bounce up when you kick off the floor and down when you land. Your head moves a little bit from left to right but there's almost no vertical movement.

Seems reasonable.
I have Photoshop CC 2014 and I find the animation feature lacking. Does the current version of Photoshop change much to the animation tools to make it... good? So far I'm unsatisfied with it, TV Paint, and Flash.
>>2444229

Also Google the animdessin plug in
>>2444467
I know. His videos are two years old. My question stands.
>>2444482
He made a new one a few months ago.
>>2444229
Honestly, Photoshop is the easiest animation software to use. TVPaint, Flash, and ToonBoom all have different interfaces that take a long time to learn and have their own hangups and benefits.
You're not explaining your issues with any of the programs you've listed, so for all we know you could just be retarded
>>2444229
Quite honestly you probably won't find a digital animation program that will fill all your expectations. I assume you're coming from traditional animating. TVPaint has always been the easiest for me when sketching out movement, Photoshop has been the best for building an entire scene (aesthetically) and adding extras (videolayers etc). Try to find your own workflow within the programs like Alex Grigg does in Photoshop.
>>2444467

I did each part of her body separately (head/arms/body/face), mainly aiming for consistency in their sizes. Though they grow bigger at the end.
The timings has a bit delay with the song. I'm also sure that I need loomis. Anything else did I miss?
Is it bad practice to copy someone else's work?
Since people are discussing the topic, which program does everyone use? I use After Effects at work but it's not very good for character animation.

How to blink:
Open eyes > Close eyes > 1, maybe 2 inbetweens > Open eyes
It also helps to make sure the eyes aren't pulsating every frame
>>2445397
>prefer drawing in CSP
>animation shortcuts are a fucking pain
>making new frames is an extra step and isn't as easy and flipping to the next frame and starting to draw again
That's the thing I love about PS; once you get all of the key bindings mapped how you want, it's crazy fast to animate with. I basically made the rocker ring on my Cintiq Companion act as both the zoom and the frame flipping, with the button above for panning/playing the clip. So basically I'd never need to use the keyboard or let go of the tablet. Just drawing and flipping like old school animation.
Maybe it'll come naturally to me over time. I just started learning ClusterfuckBoom today so I'm a little all over the place.
>>2445472
that helped, how do you figure out these things without having to look up a rule like that for everything?
>>2445486
Well, eyes don't pulsate (usually), so that's a pretty easy rule...
I forget where I got the blinking thing from. Must have seen it in another animation. Makes sense if you imagine the top eyelids are a falling object, then hit the bottom eyelids and bounce back up at a slower rate. It helps emphasis the motion.
A blink with even inbetweens might be good for a slow blink of disbelief, but then you'd want to add extra closed frames to keep the emphasis.
Gotta map your motion and plot the arcs, dude.

Can anyone with toon boom help me out with this? Is there onion skinning in the cheapest essentials version?
>>2445604
there're just keyframes
maybe add more inbetween or breakdown?

email toonboom

easy rule to remember
eyes close faster then they open, example:
eyes open
1st frame: eyes closed 3/4
2nd frame: eyes closed
3rd frame: eyes closed 1/2
eyes open
should make it look more natural
A little expression exercise. I was originally trying to do an expression sheet and ended up doing a small animation instead. There's no story behind what he's looking at, was really just using it to practice at drawing this character's face for awhile. It's a nice way of practicing two things at once.

I dig this a lot, nice work anon.
I never realized how critical the length of individual frames were until I started to animate, holy shit. I knew it was important, but not crucial. I feel like a dummy.
This was the timing before I could pinpoint what was wrong.
>>2447173
And then when I revised the timing.
I wish I could add a lot more in-betweens but I'm starting to hit the limit of CSP PRO.

that head nod seems uneccessary

You and your friend are adults?

yeah that's nice. You should try cleaning it up, coloring and finishing it for practice and funzies. https://youtu.be/41kv1bVZmuM

Yeah

this still doesnt look right
What's a nice, simple animation program with a clean interface?
I tried clip studio but I think the UI is terrible and overcrowded with too many tools.
>>2447758
>What's a nice, simple animation program with a clean interface?
Closest might be Flash, honestly. For an animation program to be beyond just sketching, it needs to have a lot of editing camera, sometimes rigging, etc tools. Being able to quickly change the timeline of an animation or light table stuff.
for little doodle animations, CSP is a godsend

Got any good tutorials for CSP
>>2448841
nvm. Clip studio pro. How does it fair against toon boom, flash, or TV paint?
>>2448567
Muh dick desu senpai. The arms bend at an unnatural angle for a frame or so towards the end, right before she changes her pose, though, looks unnecessary! Very cute overall though.
Toonz Software Used by Studio Ghibli and ‘Futurama’ Being Made Free and Open Source
http://www.cartoonbrew.com/tech/toonz-software-used-studio-ghibli-futurama-made-free-open-source-138111.html
never heard of the software before, but I am looking forward to this. will be out on 26.03.2016

Aimation wise, it's pretty close to drawing on paper. I've only scratched the surface but it's better than photoshop animation wise, better than flash drawing wise,
and I haven't use toonboom or TV paint enough to tell the differentiate between the two. I couldn't differentiate between those two and clip studio paint either.
Can't export every frame in CSP. I'm using ex ver. Why?
I guess I needed to mess with the timeline settings
the onion skin is very glitchy
>>2449773
thats not a ball bouncing, lay off the squash
>>2449773
Your squash is squished way too flat. Remember that while you can change the shape of the object in some ways, you have to keep the volume of the object consistent. In the squished frame, the ball loses a lot of its mass. You haven't distributed the mass correctly.
do you guys have any character sheets or know where I can find any? disney, ghibli, tv animation, doesn't matter.

Holy, this guy is so good. So he's french and he managed to get into japanese studios, and worked on Space Dandy? Fucking awesome.
I just updated CSP too. Pretty dumb that it's limited to 1 second of animation after you set it from the default 30 to 24fps. Didn't spend the 80 bucks for EX and I think the sale is done. Did I fuck up and miss that opportunity?
Man, 2D Animation impresses way too much, much, I'm too scared to even try.
>>2450204
hay i feel the same but its fun to mess with. im not even that good at drawing.

Is there an offline video frame-by-frame viewer that exists, something like PureRef for animation?
MPC-HC is laggy as fuck.

It goes on sales every few months.
In the mean time, just pirate it.

I need help guys
Im fairly new to animating but having trouble picking the right software. Ived used Photoshop in the past but didnt like the idea of layers being tied to frames. Should i continue using it or wait for Toonz to become open source and use that?
sorry for my bad english, i am part retard
>>2431249
Animators, could you advise me please?
I've never really animated before although I know a little about it. I'm really interested in learning how to go about it and not just the principles of drawing for it but also how to use programs like Flash. Where should I start?

I personally practice on easytoon, sai then paper.
easytoon is very easy to use and allow you practice your motion.

>>2450199
ain't he a gobelins graduate?
>>2450781
Since when does the school you comes out from means anything?
>>2450783
well if it's the most prestigious animation school in the world I think it does matter quite a bit and makes his achievements later on, well, not less impressive, but more understandable I suppose.
>>2450785
I'm not really sure the school has anything to do with his hard work.
>>2450787
You saying that being in literally the best environment possible to learn/practice animation has nothing to do with anything?
I mean, if she was a painter or something like that I'd agree with you. But animation is a different beast. It's a group effort.
of course she worked hard, I'm not trying to invalidate that, but you are absolutely delusional if you think that him going to Gobelins (if he did, I can't remember) has nothing do with anything.
An employer wants to see what kind of work you've done. they want to see your drawings and other animated work you've done. Imagine graduating, and having a demo reel from Gobelins out of the gate. That kind of shit is what could for example boost you from getting an inbetweener-job, to getting a key animator job.
Achille Bibard didn't go to Gobelins though.
>>2450711
Nice, I'll check this out too. Thanks!
How would I go about animating traditionally without a peg bar? I'm planning on taking pictures of every frame manually but how do I put them all together? Is there a specific program for it?
>>2451482
Monkey Jam is software that can help you put all the pictures together. As far as peg bars are concerned, maybe use paper clips or those black paper holders
