Beginner Thread
Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, There is a question thread for that.

Visit the usual "Art book Thread" to find your desired books.

Do not forget to PLEASE RESIZE and crop your images before uploading them. 1kpx is fine.
Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," Read the f*cking sticky, it's there for a reason: >>1579290 → → → → →
There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at https://www.reddit.com/comments/46sb9k/

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

In it's bare basics, texture is all about mark making. Disrupting a surface to create light, shadow, and color patterns that would not be present on an otherwise smooth surface.
>>
>>2429958
Experimenting and doing texture studies, looking at various objects and attempting to render their texture onto paper, would be one of the better ways to approaching learning about texture. There are plenty of textures in your own room to take a look at to study! Carpet, wood, plastic, metal etc. It's all about finding new surfaces.
>>
>>2429958
What book is that image from?
>>
>>2429961
Texture is also more than just bumpy surfaces, it's also the quality of the reflectivity of the objects. A cloth object, skin, hair, and metal all catch and reflect light differently. Learning textures will be invaluable. It will help bring character to your work, help your compositions by distinguishing between different object, and elevate your drawings.

A lot of it has to do with your color choices.

Also why is your grass growing in neat rows? that's weird as fuck.

Is it possible for contour drawing from imagination to not be harmful or have poor results? It's my first instinct to try to create appealing, feminine and angular lines for fingers and such as opposed to constructing things explicitly and I don't want it to come back and bite me in the ass.
>>
>>2430208
Construction is to help you learn structure and to use as a guide if you have trouble drawing that particular piece of anatomy. If you feel you have a good enough grasp on hands, it achieves the aesthetic you want, and youre not getting negative feedback on them, by all means.
>>
>>2430202
I suspected the colourthing - the grass was because I didnt really know how to make grass without using brushes, and with the gradient being that direction the grass just ended up that way too

Personally I think that as long as you have enough going on in the image to imply action, you don't really need to do things like motion blur. I think what you need to concentrate on here is fixing the precision of your strokes. It's a very mechanical object but all of your ellipses are wonky and every straight line is crooked.
>>
>>2430296
Thanks for the feedback, I know they are crooked. Do you think it would be best to do it with horizontal lines and then rotate it in the end, or do artists just freehand straight lines?
>>
>>2430303
There are a number of ways to approach it, none of them are more right than another

-Draw it horizontally as you said, then rotate it to the angle you want. In photoshop, if you hold down the shift key it'll lock your stroke so that they're perfectly straight, if that's something you want to use.
-Use the polygonal lasso tool to mask out the shapes and then maybe go over it with a brush to keep it painterly
-Use a ruler and brace your tablet pen against it to make angled, straight lines

there's probably more out there, but use whatever gets you the results you want.
>>

I've always wondered how much you need to know in order to understand character designs. Currently learning my fundamentals, perspective, anatomy, and all that stuff, but I still wonder when I'll be able to understand and tackle character design.

From what I'm told, people just "copy" styles. But how is that even achieved?
>>
>>2430989
>But how is that even achieved?
You find an image in a style you like. Maybe it's by an artist you like and follow. You copy(!!) the image, and learn from it. Then you apply what you learn to your own work.
The end.
>>
any informative pic for fold garment?

Reading through Loomis' stuff now, but a little confused on the entire learning process. Am I to draw things as I currently do now (shitty) and apply new fundamentals that I learn throughout everything that I draw from then on?

I understand that his stuff is to be used as reference and not linear.

>>
>>2431176
But what do you learn from copying something. Say they have something like >>2430989 , they are doing things that you won't learn from fundamentals. Eyes are more far apart than usual and are huge, face is very small etc.

Simply copying won't teach you anything if there's no way to apply it. What you're suggesting is way to vague. But then again, I may be asking in the wrong thread since there's anons like this >>2431235 in here

style is a combination of personal bias towards certain line weights, proportions, shapes, colors, etc. Study those while copying whoever you choose and then apply it to your work.

What'd be probably best way to learn from an art educational book? So far all I've managed to do were copies of illustrations from books loomis/hampton and those beginner-friendly books. But I don't seem like I'm learning anything. Help? Or drawing might not be the thing I meant to do, although I loved it when I did draw for fun without any concern about fundamentals.

>>

try and overlay an actual face or body over one of yours - the proportions are way off

>>2431528
Yeah pyramids, cirlces, cylinders and cube type stuff. Goes well with practicing perspective. You can try a bit shading as well but dont get to into it, as the real point is training yourself to be able to actually draw forms. Really practicing shading is kind of pointless when you cant even draw something to shade yet.

You learn what they do that is non-standard, novel, and get a sense for the choices the artist made. (Oh! They're expanding the front plane horizontally! Oh! I don't understand why you're whining about it here when you could be finding an artist you like and copying them to understand for yourself.

There's nothing wrong with putting your work out there before becoming a master of the arts. And im 100% sure that the success of the game has more reasons than the art.

People still need to put food on the table so they are going to do what they can.

Another thing. You should be trying to get good for yourself. Your motivation should be that YOU want to be good, not that you dont want other people to call your work shit.

>Couldn't draw anything but heads
>Decided to start practicing the fundamentals

Welp. Looks like I'm not gonna stop doing this any time soon. 1 hour every day really does work wonders. Ignore the hands. I didn't put much thought into them, and I haven't done any anatomy studies at all.

Basically all I did was do 1 still life every day for an hour. After that, I started following draw a box.

I think that Draw a box (which I started like 3 days ago) has helped me a lot in terms of construction, but I learned how to construct from doing still lives.

How you guys progressing?
>>
>>2431605
You need to be drawing cubes and learning how they work in perspective before you even try to draw heads.

The people that spam Loomis on here are incredibly harmful to new artists.

Practice every day for 1 hour.
Check out this website and follow it.

An easy way is to literally take the pose yourself. Don't even think of scoffing at that or half assing it. Stand up, look at the picture and fucking adopt the pose. Where do you feel the most pressure against the ground? That's where the weight is. If you had to imagine a single line to represent you in that position, what would it look like? Two lines? Three? remember that you just want to convey the feel of the pose.
>>
>>2434031

Hard round. If you're just working in lines it's all you need. Keep it simple while you're a beginner - and I seriously suggest you work a little drawing on paper as well. Cheap pen/pencil and printing paper is fine.

If you start painting you can work in the soft round to soften some edges, but use it sparingly. A lot of beginners use the soft round to paint most of their stuff and it always comes out looking muddy and awful.
Once you get on with it a bit I find a good flat brush is useful for sort of 'carving' features and edges, and getting a texture brush or two doesn't hurt, but don't worry about that until you sort out your basics.

are there any hampton-tier resources that can help me figure out how to construct wings from simple forms, and give me some ideas on some approaches to attaching wings to the figure?

I've exhausted what I believe to be all of the obvious resources and search terms. Most resources seem to only focus on feathers and how they are arranged (I'll get around to feather eventually). Even when anatomy is discussed, it's almost always from a flat, ventral/dorsal aspect, neglecting the to give the impression that wings are 3d things with volume.

If you more or less keep the whole circle when drawing in profile and cut off the sides when drawing in front view, how do you decide exactly how much do you need to cut off at any point between those two? In the very first pages just practice drawing an ellipse before fitting them in a box. As in do the minor axis first then do your ellipse. Then in order to verify whether your ellipse is good or no, use an ellipse guide or if you don't have one cut your ellipse and fold it symmetrically. If it doesn't turn out symmetrically, try to find the minor axis again until it's symmetric and trim it until it's folded up perfectly.

I too researched constructing a perfect cube but haven't found anything remote to "starting from the bottom base" then find the height. The closest thing was https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB3UEpxFlj8 but it works only for finding the vanishing points first (which is probably not possible for a lot of drawings from reference).

So yeah, for that particular exercise in Scott's book, grind your eyeballing and ellipse skills is the easiest way to do a perfect cube.

What i was most interested in is that if there is a was to tell a square from a rectengle in prespective. Can i be sure that it'\s right and sides are even etc etc

Can I know if my ellipse is right width and actually is a circle in perspective? I'm not a real begiiner but now i feel like mastering perspective shit and practicing the hell outta it.

So the ansver is "just eyeball it" ?
I can't be certain and just need to eyeball it to look convincing?
>>
>>2434634

People are down on you because you're talking about making a style when you've been drawing for a few months, none of them seriously.
It's a bad trap to get into, so just be careful with it. You shouldn't be making a style when you don't know the basic fundamentals and have a grasp on design. Any style you make will be shit until you figure that out, so focus on figuring that out and you'll get to working out a style sooner.
>>
>>2434760
to see if it's a square and not a rectangle it won't be very effective if you're solely using your eyes. Why? because perspective distort things and depending on lens, POV, cone of vision all affect the output on the picture plane. the only and precise way to find out whether it's a square or rectangle is manually, by measuring things.
you'll need to find the diagonal vanishing point of the square/rectangle first then measure it manually from the station point. (if it's two points perspective instead of one you'll need to find the center vanishing point etc.)

Since you have the book you should turn to page 48-50.

as for drawing a perfect ellipse ... well I just said it before... minor axis is the key. and grind lots of ellipses that way. turn to page 18-19. The answer doesn't have to be eyeball it, you can eyeball it. but that'll be the quick and dirty way. Even so for a beginner at perspective drawing, it is more recommended to train your eyeballing by ellipse guide or cut it and fold it in half. I would really suggest you do that at first because you won't attain a good eyeballing skill without checking your mistakes. And relying on a poor eyeballing skill may lead to bad habits. Even Scott himself ALWAYS use ellipses guides in order to assure that everything is correct. (if you've watched his DVD you'll know)

once you can envision minor axis and seeing the symmetry when you're trying to perfection your ellipse, then you're good to go. There was a thread about Scott's book in crimson daggers and i think that it might help you.

(next post)

http://crimsondaggers.com/forum/thread-4839.html

I thought that you were interesting in learning to find the height of perfect cubes based on the fact that you have the bottom z plane square ready already... please don't. I've searched online for 10 hours and it's theoretically possible but needlessly complicated. the ellipse method, while looking hard at first hand, is far easier than going through that shit. Because we all know that a circle can fit into a square. And an ellipse is a circle in perspective. By that definition if the ellipse fits perfectly in a square then it's not a rectangle.

the book doesn't teach the "finding the height" of a cube but it really answers the rest of your question. you have to memorize everything of the previous chapters before going through the next. And revisit the old chapters very often to not get confused.

Uh no he's right, a lot of people on these threads think the loomis method or whatever constructing method is a magic method to draw heads without using reference. No, you use reference and construct it with loomis, and study the reference. And then eventually you'll be able to construct a head properly with minimal reference because you've simplified and studied actual heads with that method. I don't think you understand how much reference is necessary, you can't magically draw shit properly without ever drawing alot from reference first. Not to mention people underestimate how much your favorite artist uses reference, everyone does, it's not cheating. You don't have to copy the reference

Depends on what kind of advice do you want. The hands are pretty good for a beginner, and I really like the scribbles on the book. The hood on his head is floating on top, unless it's supposed to be a really stiff cloth then it should probably fall and cover his head. There's some perspective issues with whatever those objects are, just try to think of the camera, in this case looking down, and the shapes of the objects your drawing, what shows at the angle and what wouldn't. Otherwise just keep drawing
>>

I don't know any specific ones really, you just need to try to imagine shapes, squares cylinders etc., in space, which I guess is done by just drawing shapes, but it just comes with time. Take it with a grain of salt, its just how I think of drawing right now, you do whatever you need to do to draw what you want to draw

The rib cage and hips are off, maybe just do some pelvis and rib cage studies to get a feel for the shape they make on the body.

I can't find a lot correct about it besides the number of limbs. Try reference next time.

/pro/ tips

1. The negative space is more important than the positive space
2. To get good at perspective just copy compositions and architectural photos
3. Practice coloring and schemes
4. Learn different pen, pencil strokes and the variations of shading, cross hatching etc.
5. Pick up the anatomy book Greys Anatomy and study
6. Copy other people's work till you create your own style.
7. Drawing consits of muscle memory and memorization. The more you copy, the more you automatically remember
8. Look at details with a needle point precision
9. Work on the things you suck at the most.
10. Draw using a pen so you can learn to work with your mistakes as opposed to erasing them, it's harder but it will make you a better artist
11. Get comtorble with using less strokes
12. Understand that discouragement will only hurt you. Always continue forward open for critiscims and suggestions. Us artists are 1000x more sensitive then regular people, don't let anyones insults deter you from enjoying the art form
12. Focus

This is a 7 minute sketch I made using only pen, it's not my best, but its where my technical ability is.
