really try to visualize and understand the form of the cranium. your drawing falls a little flat towards the back of the head and i think a more solid understanding of the cranium would be beneficial. be mindful of the head connecting to the rest of the body. it connects decently to the neck but the neck doesnt connect to the torso properly. look at how low you've drawing what would have been the trapezius.

upon first glance your drawing looks successful but after a few seconds of analysis you can tell that you're trying to draw what you see instead of trying to understand the forms and anatomy of the bust

nice job overall, don't let my feedback discourage you. maybe take a crack at toning your drawing

not at all.

there's a lot of detail in the top half of the character's outfit and it doesn't read well because a lot of the lines seem to lack purpose, not to mention the line quality is all very uniform throughout the drawing with adds to a lack of a focal point.

the figure seems to be sitting down but it's unclear what they're sitting on

the stuff above his head is also visually confusing

in general one of your biggest issues is a lack of clarity. you can achieve greater clarity by editing the lines you choose to include and their thickness. try to only add lines if it benefits the drawing in some way, such as indicating volume or making the design more intricate

the construction of the head is also not as solid as it could be, everything looks a little flat. the eye on the left also looks questionable.. is it supposed to be scarred? it doesn't read well. the expression is for a lack of a better term, a little creepy. it's a little too mellow given how grandiose the character from what i can assume is supposed to be

anyways i hope that helped feel free to ask any questions or if you need any clarification

a lot of people on this board ask for feedback but when it's given to them they ignore it. it makes me a little less interested in giving people feedback every time.

Please anons help me with this, guide to the right videos or give some tips...anything.
Thing is: when I try to paint stylized or minimalistic I just can't seem to separate the values of the objects of the same color if they are touching, like these trees and the grass, (the green stuff, sorry for my broken english) wihtout making some too saturated and bright and others too dark and muddy... My brain doesn't understand this...
>>
>>2425941
Trust me i appreciate this kind of thing very much! I agree with you in general with your comments on clarity and line confusion, I am still very much trying to hone my technique and be as efficient with lines as possible, especially in the one that youre commenting on, I feel like i went overboard on the armor and and it makes things hard to distinguish. I am trying to think more in terms of detail and line management to avoid this in the future, and you saying that helps me know im kinda on the right track, plus i didnt really notice what you said about the face. I guess I was going for a more ominous/slightly sinister maybe look? Interesting that it conflicted with how you interpreted the rest of his design too.

thanks again, got any thoughts on the other two?

Before you even draw anything you should have constructed a narrative. Where is this person? Who are they? What are they doing?

What kind of response is this? If you want a background in your picture, unless you're going for some kind of graphic designy type of thing, then it only makes sense for you to think about the scenario first. Not him but all my u wot.

Some quick little character sketches. I'm working on consistency, so trying to keep things simple. Would appreciate some criticism.
>>
>>2426069
Why would you need a narrative in a picture you drew just because you thought it "looks cool" This is basically all art here. What sort of a fool are you - trying to buy yourself out of feeling embarassed about working in a visual medium? There is nothing wrong just creating a picture based on emotion, without a story. Of course the poster could have planned a composition beforehand, but they can still just make up whatever at this point and it will be as good as whatever stupid narrative based picture they would have tohught up. A blue, mouthless lady with a tear in her eye, with a bloody soldier in the background! So meaningful!
>>
>>2425523
Who holds a flower like that?
>>
>>2426123
I'm not that guy, I draw characters floating in space all the time. But when you want to have a background what the hell else are you going to do except think about a place the character might be for whatever reason? Even if it's as simple as standing outside in the city on a sunny day there's probably still some reason you'd choose that. Like if I drew a space marine and wanted to put in a background I would probably think of some places he might go like the interior of a ship or a battlefield or wasteland or something. Or since this character's blue maybe you just want a background that would create a color theme so you put her by the sea or in the snow. Presto you spend 2 minutes connecting the dots and have an idea for a background now.
>>
>>2426137
That's not what I mean. You're just making shit up afterwards, to fit whatever turned out. It's not "I want to draw a pretty girl, but I can't start unless I have a story planned out" or "I drew a pretty girl, but I didn't plan a story - now the picture is ruined"
>>
>>2426156
Dude I don't know what you're talking about. The way I see it, someone asked for help coming up with a background for a character and someone else said they should've planned ahead which generally you should do because things added as an afterthought usually don't look cohesive or take a long time to make work. Then I came in and said even if you don't plan ahead, if you end up with a doodle you like and want to expand on with a background, at least taking a second to think about either some aspect of the character or a mood you want to convey is also a valid way to come up with an idea for a background and I see no reason why either of those pieces of advice should be discounted.

You're really overreacting. Creating a narrative narrative doesn't mean you have to write a whole story to accompany the image.

You should just put a few seconds of thought into who the pretty girl is and what she is feeling and why. You don't have to but it'll make your drawings stronger and people will respond to them better if there's something there they can identify with.

It's also good to include multiple elements in a drawing. A pretty girl is one, then you can give her a significant prop like a hairbrush or something, and then she can be sat at a dresser brushing her hair. The dresser can have props on it too that tell us about who she is. Isn't that already much more interesting than a pretty girl smiling and looking off to the left?

In that case keep drawing from photos for now and build up your observational skills and your muscle memory. Then I'd recommend you start trying to draw slight variations on your reference. First try drawing it flipped horizontally. Then using multiple references of the same person, choose one and draw it at a different angle such as taking a straight on view and turning it 3/4. You need multiple references to see how the features rotate in space. From there you can go on to drawing from a reference and changing the expression, or by then you might be onto some totally new exercise but that progression worked out for me so I'm passing it along.

You finished that quick man, nice. Anyway I fucking suck at hair, I swear I change my approach with literally every drawing. The best advice I've probably gotten in that regard is to draw it in shapes rather than trying to draw individual strands. In theory if you observe your references carefully you'll begin to come up with ways to represent it effectively.

I like the colors and everything, but the face is pretty androgynous right now, anon. I assume it's a woman, but she has a very manly face. Mostly because everything in the face reads as squared and angular, except for the lips. The jaw specially is too squared and long. No cheekbones, the long detailed angular nose bridge, the weird conection between the chin and the neck that makes her neck look fat... More roundness and less lines are your friend.
I decided to procrastinate on what I was supposed to be drawing to make this almost pointless edit to illustrate how I would make the features more feminine, and also spaced the eyes that were too close together.

If it was supposed to be a guy, my only recommendation for you is to turn it off, like a light switch

Hey dudes, long time no see. I really need some pointers on this one. I can't seem to fix it, it just looks scewed, like the perspective on the body is all wrong and weird. Any advice?

And it's not done, so just ignore the pipeleg and the smudged fingers. It'll all be changed. I usually try to render out alot of different ideas before deciding on something, that's why there's a pipeleg for example.

Thanks bro. I think the it's just not reading that well, but the line wrapping around the asscheek is suppose to be the water, and not the asscrack. I'll emphasise it a bit more, and explain it better.

Perhaps it was the decision of postposing college by some months, ask for a lesser paid but more "drawing" friendly position at job.

Even after that, I would like to think that I've tried as much as my possibilities have allowed me.

Time isn't in my favor, neither other important circumstances but art is my last bet in life so I will keep trying

Hello, this is my first time posting my art on this board! I've admired from afar for a while but I just recently started trying to draw again like two days ago. Used to do it in high school but haven't in a while. Anyways, I wanted critique on this head. Her head's supposed to be tilted down but I'm not sure if it comes across like that, or if it just looks like she has a tiny chin and big forehead. Excuse the really harsh erased/chicken scratch lines, that's always been a weakness of mine. Might post the full image later, it's really rough right now. Any tips would be appreciated! Thanks you guys.

The eyes are quite a bit too large for a normal sized human face. The nose does will never have dark shadows on both sides like that, don't get into the habit of doing that, it makes the nose look like a symbol. The way the head connects to the neck is wrong; her head is facing toward us, so you would see more of her neck on the right side. Also, the neck is too short on the left, it goes almost right into her shoulder. I'm no expert, but these are the first things I noticed

Also, if you want the head to look tilted down, you have to draw all the features on a tilt. Draw some guide lines and follow those. heres an example of what it would look like tilted.
>>
>>2428174
just realized you meant tilted foward,in that case, draw your guide lines in an upward curve, and place the features following that curve. also think about how the features would look from the angle of looking down at them. you wouldnt see the nostrils, and the eyes would be thinner, etc.

Please don't listen to them, you only need to make her head bigger, the arms aren't too big, they are not as thin as on the photo but their size is still realistic, the shoulders should be a bit longer and the arms too but their thickness is okay.

Look at the photo, imagine a line that goes trough the middle of her rib cage then a side of the rib cage and compare it to the size of her head as a way get more accuracy.

The man on the left need thicker arms and a longer forearm a bigger hand too, a longer right leg and the left one need to be shorter.

The woman on the right need a head bigger closer to her shoulder, a shorter forearm(imagine her arm going from the shoulder to the forearm close in size to the said forearm) and maybe a tight a bit longer

Guy on the bottom left need a thicker neck, longer and bigger legs, guy in the middle need a thicker left leg.

Try to use opaque colors and separate them on layers. I threw this together to show you, I hope it helps.(It's rough and disgusting, sorry.)

Take it with a grain of salt though, I'm learning too. There's probably a bunch of information there that are wrong.

It looks like a map from a game, this probably took more or less a week to complete so I guess take your time. Use clipping masks also.

Because everytime someone made one it was mostly full of people bitching for one reason or another. But there was one up a couple weeks ago.

How do I into speed painting? It takes me so long to make something look passable, I spent so long on this i lost interest. I see people make things look good with only a few strokes, I wish I could do that.

I was practicing drawing poses in math class the other day, and I wanted to make one knee closer to the viewer than the other. How do I know how big to draw things like that?

i mean theres really no wrong way to exaggerate poses as long as you've memorized basic anatomy. i mean practically the whole page could be the knee if you really know what you are doing and it'd still look good. i wouldn't worry about that now though just learn to draw things in proper perspective first.

Set a timer with the goal in mind to get as much information down as possible in the drawing. Stick to the timer and do not work anymore on the piece when it's up. Your first times will look like shit, heck your first couple dozens of times will look like shit. but keep at it. with practice, you'll become more used to picking out the important information in a reference and you will begin to develop strategies and familiar strokes to better transcribe that information.

Practice, persistence.

Thank you! Yes, I did mean tilted forward as in chin towards chest, my bad. Your critiques were really helpful, I haven't had a chance to work on it again but I will definitely refer back to these!
