Anyone else have a tendency to boycott themselves?

I've simply postponed replying to new client inquiries for so long it got awkward to even reply at all. Why? Because their project seemed out of my comfort zone or they were asking things I wasn't familiar with. Basically treating me like I'm way more experienced than I am, and kind of intimidating me a bit with that. Part of me probably was also just afraid of making a fool of myself, even though that's a necessary step on the journey.

I've even had a really awesome friendly reply from an agent that I never answered. Just because in my mind I'm just 'some dude painting' and nowhere near good enough for anyone or anything. Yet I'm kind of getting by, making an effort to only take the jobs that are 'hey we need you to paint this and that' 'awesome, i'll do it!' and no fancy schmancy briefing or stuff. Basically: Complex, financially attractive gigs scare me off.

What do?

It's called success barriers and yes it's very common. Google the term for strategies

Have you heard people say that you only see other artists' best work? It's like that. I've noticed that people rate my skill much higher than I would, and I think it's because they don't see all of the failures or shitty midway points in the paintings or how I need to study because there are things I'm not good enough at. They just see the polished finished pieces that I deemed worthy of making public. So the people commissioning you don't see you stretching your comfort zone, they see some pretty good stuff and say "I bet he could do this too." You probably look much better in other people's eyes than in your own. So you have to just accept stuff like this and trust the fact that they trust you. The first time is always the hardest.
