If you permanently lost the use of your dominant hand, how many of you would train your other hand to draw/paint? How many of you would just give up art?

I like to think I'd keep doing it but honestly I'd probably quit. Relearning all that muscle memory would probably take forever.
>>
>>2420057
I'd just keep at it until I was drawing even better than I was before, or I died. If I'm not drawing, I genuinely would lose focus of my life.
>>
>>2420057
too far in it to give up now, the 6 months or so it'd take to completely remaster fine motor control with my other hand is nothing compared to the years already spent training to get to where i am
>>
>>2420078
You think it would only take 6 months to get on the same level as your drawing hand?
>>
>inb4 I'd straight up kill myself

I'd straight up kill myself
>>
Skill doesn't live in your arm.
>>
ambidextrous meester reace
>>
>>2420088
nah, but 6 months to get good enough to make presentable work
in fact, it'd probably really help make my drawings more loose and energetic, less likely to over do a line, hell, now i actually wanna do it, maybe when i have more time

as >>2420096 said, the hard to learn shit's in your head. i learned to draw with a mouse in less than a month after my tablet gave out one time, mostly doing muscle studies, pretty sure i could get to a confident level with my off hand in 6 months if it's the only working hand i have
>>
>>2420064
just make sure you don't get carpel tunnel in the left too
>>
>Tfw not ambidextrous

This is now a left hand vs right hand thread.

Oh god, even my dominant hand strokes are shit.
>>
>>2420070
Muscle memory doesnt play a big a big part in drawing. Knowing where to put lines all comes from the mind, if youre using your dominant hand you can get that line faster but even if you were using a foot youd still know where the line should be but it might take 10 more tries before you get it where you want.

Sometimes i wish i could draw with my eyes so i didnt have to deal with the mechanical limitation of my hands
>>
>>2420064
If both hands fail, use feet, if both feet fail, use mouth, if mouth fails use penis
>>
Drawing is mostly a mental thing.
As long as I know where to put lines I could use my ass to hold the pencil.
>>
>>2420057
I've learned how to Jack off with my left hand, I'm sure I could learn how to draw with my left hand too. Also might consider getting a robotic hand if possible.
>>
>>2420250
This.
It's *the current year*, I'm pretty sure science has advanced far enough where I can get a sweet ass robot hand to draw with

My drawing hand has been broken 10-12 times (i lost count a while ago). I just work through the pain. For a while i was considering trying to learn lefty but my left hand is dumb. Sometimes my joints lock up but that's better than starting over completely dexterity wise.

Pic very related. Left hand has never been broken, for reference.

>>2420398
unless u broke

>>2420754
Why has your hand been broken so many times?

>>
>>2420754
how do you hold a pencil?
>>
>>2420762
Skateboarding accounts for most of the breaks. Also got a boxer's break from a fight i was in once, as well as a few broken from basketball and one from being drunk.

I think i just have weak fingers, or i'm super unlucky.

>>2420764
They can try, I owe 400 dollars on that card. lol.

Like this. The fucked up curvature of my middle finger actually works perfectly for holding pens.
>>
>>2420057
I'd switch. There's nothing else to me that's worth this much trouble, so I'd do whatever it takes. Knowing that Frazetta did it too only cements that decision

How many of you are lefties? Curious now about the whole left handed being artistically superior thing.

I myself am a lefty

I feel stupid but what is carpal tunnel and how do you know if you have it? I heard it feel like having a cramp in your hand, I had this a few weeks ago and worried about it then but it cleared up after a few days. Am i at risk?
>>
>>2420754
>>
>>2421212
Google it. Basically anyone who uses their hands for repetitive motions, like typing or drawing, is at risk. I can't describe it but I hear basically your hand becomes unusable for finer stuff. Again, google it. There's lots of stretches you should be doing to reduce the risk. Regular exercise also helps, I think.
>>
any stories about mangakas or great artist that had suffered carpal tunnel????

mah nigga

my parents told me I broke my (right ring) finger when I was 3 years old. of course I have no memory of it

the single problem I have is I that I can't punch with my right (without breaking it even more) or that sometimes it hooks in stuff. when drawing I have no problem
>>
>>2422695
I like how you separated mangakas from great artist

The only reasonable way to quit illustration is going blind
>>
>>2422786
if you still have your hands you could scratch surfaces, the only reasonable way to quit illustration is to go blind and lose hands
>>
>Arm became very sore

>The soreness doesn't go away

It's only a matter of time, for me OP.
Going to die drawing.

It would be difficult but it sounds doable, Shigeru Mizuki lost his entire arm in WW2 but retaught himself with the other and his artwork was really great. It would probably take a while to get used to but it can be done.

>>2420926
I'm left-handed, my handwriting is a joke but my drawing skills are ok
>>
>>2420057
Right hand is dominant, using left hand for drawing/painting. I could call myslef partly ambidexteruous. It wouldn't take too long learning how to write/draw with right hand.
>>
>>2420057
Learning to draw with a non-dominant hand is nowhere near as hard as learning to draw well period.
>>
>>2422827
Do you stretch and stuff? I just started getting a tenderness in my hand where my pinky/wrist is and looked up some stretches which helped a lot. I wish I knew this earlier. Also gonna start doing light exercise and cut back on internet.

I would have no problem learning my left but it would be damned hard and would miss my right.
>>
>>2422862
same....oddly enough
