there's a saying that i forget but the point of it was that some people spend so much time worrying about optimizing their learning that they're wasting their time not because they're learning the wrong thing, but they're worrying too much about doing the wrong thing.

What's the best way to shade with a pencil? My shading usually looks more like burn scars than shadows.
Ok what the fuck is point of studying loomis i'm copying hard and try to understand this book, and drawing but next day, i forget about what was that what the fuck? Is Just discipleline?
>>2416522
Start studying vilppu's figure drawing book and have Hamptons' anatomy book on the side. Hampton will help you learn the general muscle area. Vilppu will help you feel the drawing. Study Lomis' anatomy when you want exact muscle location
I'm noticing general improvement at least. I need more patience and a lot more study time.

>>2416532
>>2416522
Loomis teaches you mainly construction, then proportion, anatomy and a bit of perspective. The point in studying it is to learn these things.
You are supposed to use the knowledge and apply the techniques that loomis presents in his books, not just copy. Copying is good to get the feel of the technique, to better understand how he did what he did, but you need to go and draw your own humans with it to really learn it.
>>2416533
My bad, I keep forgetting about phone cameras
>>2416535
Uh.. u mean draw figure or something with imagine and attaching muscle with references?
I've been reading about proportions and other things regarding the figure. How does this look? it's from imagination
>>2416538
Look at videos of people drawing. They make the construction and then flesh out the detail with knowledge of anatomy. For an example look at pic related. Or here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k43246RmuWY portrait video, he does the same thing.
>>2416553
The arms are short. Especially forearms. Look at that left arm on the left drawing, he's a freak with a stump for an arm. Don't do imagination before you know your shit, use reference. It's especially good to do life drawing to get the proportions under your skin.
>>2416553
Proportions look fine. Next time, focus more on hand and feet proportions to solidify your entire figure.
Also take notes and compare proportions of different body types as you proceed with your studies (brute male, small boy, etc.)
why am i nerveous when i drawing? is this common thing?
>>2416597
Yeah. One wrong stroke might turn you into the next hitler.
>>2416602
i can;t practice anymore today i feel something very uncomfortable
Loomis mentions that pic related is the standard, but how often do proportions vary? Is it possible to use this method on absolutely every head (with slight variations, obviously) or do some heads require a different approach?
>>2416603

I something get anxious when drawing. Like i'm short of air or something.
It tends to happen when I'm struggling with my drawing and goes away once I'm in the zone. Take a break to do something that relaxes you.
>>2416605
It is a ideal head, a handsome man with classical beauty will fit in this proportions, but you can't use it for everyone, there are many variations for this.
>>2416605
It's very much a guideline rather than an absolute.
>>2416617
There are many different techniques for this, many artists use basic shapes and guide lines to build a head (picture related isn't a verry god exemple, but it illustrates what I'm saying). Deconstructing the head into basic shapes can help you a lot, but if you are aiming for a more realistic aproach, nothing will replace actually looking at something and drawing it.
>>2416372
I feel you brother. I'm going through Peter Han drawing course exercises while using Pen & Ink: a Simple Guide for ink drawing. Things are going to be tedious no matter what you do, but try having a sketch book and doodle something, whatever, at the side. Over time you would look at it and see how you've changed over time.

But im stuck at front of girl's face

>>2416536
Load your image in paint and just orient and resize it first on the computer. Don't post straight from the phone.
>>2416637
Looks like good progress. You'll get better with more practice. After a few dozen more heads you'll start to get the hang of it.
/3/ here. How does /ic/ feel about using textures in digital paintings? Is it a common thing here? What I mean is painting out a rock and then overlaying it with a rock texture from google images to give it more texture, usually an easy way to give noise or scratches to something.
Something I just painted as practice. I overlayed the rock with a texture.
>>2416637
now do it in a 3/4 view
>>2416658
If anyone was wondering why I mentioned I'm from /3/ its because most textures for games are made this way.
Help please, I know there is something wrong with these faces, just need help narrowing down what the problem is
>>2416127
What I learned: Measurement is easier to estimate with the paint layer than with the pre-sketch. I just need rough shapes with the sketch. Color-matching by sight is fucking hard. I even used the color picker for my swatches, but they still ended up weird. I need to do my mixing on a separate layer instead of experimenting on the canvas. The anatomy of a frog isn’t ingrained in my mind. This is why they should be dissecting frogs in school…
I used to draw a lot back in highschool, mainly anime style, and then never drew anything for almost 10 years. But I quitted my job last week and i'm questioning my life's direction. I had a creative job but no freedom at all, so i decided to take 2-3 months to explore few things : design, coding, and also, drawing. This is my second attempt of study on a computer, made with mouse. I might invest in a tablet if i don't feel like going into a dead end.
tl;dr : Second drawing in 10 years - kill me
>>2416668
Try to get the correct propotion. Stick to those guidelines you are using and practice. You will eventually get the hang of it.
>>2416668
These are symbol drawn, also draw from reference if you're not doing so already. Too narrow down your issue you need to have a end goal. But for now I'd say symbolism is the main problem. Then proportion. Then finally perspective. Your problem is much more common than you think. Look around in this thread, do the basics, enough chicken scratching. Just draw the shape of the head, you lack construction. Also, read the sticky, and pay attention.

Fear of failure. You are just scared that you will find out that you are worse than you think you are. I had that fear too. You gotta change your mindset. When you are drawing you are not performing before a crowd and your drawings are supposed to be pretty bad here and there. The best artists still produce shitty drawings when practicing. Even if your drawing is shit you improve because you are drawing just like in the gym even if you don't look like a fucking greek god and can't do a million reps, each rep counts and makes you better for the next time.

You're hard lining the whole line, sometimes not drawing a line is better than drawing it.
What would be the best way to do anatomy practice?
Currently, I do a warm up, then attempt a full drawing of whatever part I'm doing for the day.
Then I read a tutorial for the day, and then practice a few based on that tutorial.
What's your guys methods?
>>2416703
you're treating your pencil like a writing instrument rather than an artistic, or musical instrument. approach each line as if you were drawing a bow across a violin, the whole movement must be smooth and conscientious (this is part of why people train drawing from the shoulder)
be aware of the different tones available out of each implement, and the effects achieved from descending and rising through those tones as well as layering and juxtaposing lines of different tones.
draw everything
practice everything together, that's what you really need to learn anyway right

I think you're chickenscratching far too much, try to look at the bold lines of the teachers and try it. You will fail but keep practicing
I don't know if this fits in a beginner thread, or some other. I haven't drawn in a month now, I realize that is bad but I can not help it. Books such as keys to drawing, drawing on tge right side of the brain makes me sick. I guess, mostly because of dull and boring exercises which are far from being fun. I've attempted to learn by reading loomis figure drawing book either though haven't got through quarter of it as I just left it for later time. That is if the passion to draw does come back somehow. So far it looks like it wont for some time.
I would just work through vilppu drawing manual if it weren't that complex. Or hampton book, with steve huston lectures. In fact my drawing ability is lacking for every drawing practice. I bet now even more so.
Anyway, I really am clueless how can I get back to drawing. Forcing myself to do it does not work. And worst part is I don't know which book/video would it be better to study from. If only I had some kind of a schedule, but I've never even tried to set one up.

>>2416903
>I've never even tried to set one up.
You have your answer right there.
How about you actually TRY first instead of looking for some magical cure-all for passion, motivation and self-discipline?
No it's not easy. Yeah, we naturally try to go down the path of least resistance. But we can't move in with you, sit next to you and nag you like a mother until you dredge up the will power to stop fucking around and try to do something that only benefits you. Believe it or not, the motivation is going to have to come from you. The person that has to set aside time to draw is you. The person that needs to physically pick up a pencil and make marks on paper is you.
>>2416903
sorry but practice and study are monotonous. if u cant develop a stockholm syndrome for drawing, or you can't motivate yourself to do art, then this might not be the thing for you.
>if only i had a schedule
fucking make one then? just plot out parts of your day its not that hard, stop being a lazy fuck.
>>2416127
where is his dick lol
>>2416927
inside of his skin-sac obviously. where do you keep your penis?
>>2416912
Nevermind, it's hopeless. I've been abandoning drawing, and getting back to it since childhood. I haven't got a passion, motivation, nor discipline for it. Setting up a schedule without knowing what exactly do I study is pointless. I can fill a week or a month with just "draw", it won't do me any good unless I'm deadset on working from a X or Y book. So far every book I've attempted felt rather dull. I'm not saying the books were bad, probably I was not ready for them.
>>2416915
I know that practice usually isn't fun. But as a beginner it's a bit discouraging to make failed drawings over and over again, with close to none progress.
I doubt schedule will work for me. And setting it up is far from being easy, unless I know exactly what I need to study/what resource to use to study etc. So far I'm just confused. Probably you are right and drawing is not meant for me. Makes me wonder why did I like it 10 to 15 years ago.

>never had a positive comment
>only negative comments
>listen to /ic/
>told that i should never want or need positive comments
>keep drawing
>negative comments still
Is positive feedback really that bad? would I improve slower with positive feedback? I can't shake the feeling that maybe a few positive comments might have actually helped me.
>>2416903
From what it sounds like you're burnt out on studying, so don't study. What you really need to do is think about why you want to draw in the first place. If you want to draw some dope ass robots then do it. Be mindful of the fact that everything you draw will suck though, but that might be enough to motivate you to study. Studying is crucial to improvement but if it makes you quit drawing then you're better off just doodling and have fun. Now quit being a bitch and go draw!
>>2417191
Post your art. Only good art should be complimented. It doesn't mean you shouldn't stop trying. You just need to earn it. Don't disparate because people are brutally honest.
>>2417200
I'm never posting my stuff here, I'm just trying to wrap my head around how me receiving constant negative feedback and again not a single positive remark helps me.
If this was reversed I don't see how that would hold me back anymore than being told everything I do is shit.
>>2417213
You not wanting to post your work makes me think that your shit sucks. If that's the case then you can't complain when everyone says your shit sucks. Either way you seem way too caught up in getting positive feedback, what you really need to be focusing on is improving and just trust that eventually the praise will come.
>>2417226
I'm not complaining that I receive only negative feedback, reread my posts. I'm trying to say that why is this seen as the "right" way and positive feedback seen as dangerous and negative?

>>2417229
Not that guy but maybe you're seeing criticism as a negative remark.
Positive remarks would be shit like "that's really good", this type of comment would not really help you in anyway. However stuff like "that's shit" would not help you either so you gotta know which comments will help you and pick what you need out of it.
>>2417253
You actually read the question congrats, glad theres more than one person in this thread.
So you would say that good and bad comments such as "that is shit" or "that is great!" are equally bad/pointless/useless?
Good, This is what I'm asking.
It seems that generally on /ic/ negative feedback is seen as this amazingly useful thing when in all honesty I don't see it as helping at all, "the hand looks funny" "the arm doesn't work" the face is fucked" the colours are muddy" or simply "this is pretty shit" "boring kind of lame"are the kind of negative comments I've received and it's always seemed that /ic/ thinks that is a good thing compared to surface level praise like "good job!" "thats good" "soo good!"

Study his works until you have extracted the essence of what draws you to those aspects of his work, base studies on some fundies if you need them. Also look into what Moebius' influences are, Jijé was his mentor for a time wasn't he?
So if I keep doing stuff like this will I eventually get better? I feel like maybe I should go to school.

>>2417335
You can do something a billion times and never get any better, because in addition to actually doing something, you need to know what you're doing. Go research, then draw, then receive critiques, then research again, and draw, and rinse and repeat.

anatomy question: so if one shoulder is raised like in >>2414902 is the corresponding collarbone also lifted? does the ribcage tilt at all or is it only the muscles moving upwards?
I cannot, for the life of me use reference. Anytime I even put up a photo to use, I just can't do anything anymore. I have no idea what is wrong with me; I'm thinking I'm just lazy and inexperienced when it comes to life drawing and stuff but its such a fucking issue. Something about dealing with real reference makes me anxious I guess. I only draw from imagination. I can only use reference if I look at something, then try to remember what it looks like (albeit fucked up; because there's no god damn reference)

Any tips on eyeballing proportions? Or does it just come with practice?
In photoshop I can take a step back and adjust everything, but on paper that is tough to do.
>>2417746
There's really nothing to it, just analyse it through copy, the same way you would from a book. Break it down and simplify it using techniques and shorthand you're familiar with if you want, but it's really simple.
Also, look into Ligne claire and belgian comics in general, it's always helpful to look for patterns between artists and draw parallels imo.
>>2417758
Thanks for that info. Will do. I usually try to copy my favorite artists' work after long studies to see how I look at it now. I want to mimic some styles (but not copy completely), but I feel as thought as I continue my studies, I'll eventually start understanding since all other questions I've had in the past have all been getting answered. I just worry too much at times.

>>2417782
>Yeah but I'd like to be one of those people that can just doodle with pen without the use of construction lines.
And how did you think they learn proportions?
Everyone goes through the same thing and the same training. Hell, even artists you've seen that don't use construction or gesture lines STILL practice those methods to make sure their proportions are in check. But since we're a beginner level, you're gonna have to practice it more often than the pros. You need to train your eye, and later, you just need to make sure your eye can still see clearly.

Spent 10 minutes sharpening one of them with a razor blade so that an inch of charcoal sticks out, cut myself twice and then sand papered the edges smoothly.
Sat down and got into position to do some gesture drawings.
Pencil felt terrible.
Do a couple of drawings to make sure.
Yep it is completely grating and hard to even move the pencil.
Turns out I got a fucking FUSAIN CHARCOAL instead of PIERRE NOIRE. PIERRE NOIRE MEANS BLACK STONE. WHICH MEANS CHARCOAL. FUSAIN ALSO MEANS CHARCOAL. FUCK ME. FUCK CONTE. FUCK THE FRENCH. FUCK PROKO. FUCK LOOMIS.
See you guys tomorrow.
>>2417935
so you went in to buy a charcoal pencil, got a charcoal pencil and now you're complaining that you got a charcoal pencil ? are you retarded ?
>>2417947
The Fusain Charcoal pencil is a very hard charcoal. It is terrible for sketching. The Pierre Noire is soft, great for linework and tone.
>>2417952
the pierre noire is also not charcoal
>>2417953
Wow you are right. It's a "lead" pencil. I swear every time I heard someone talking about it they said charcoal pencil. Would have saved me some time.
>>2417335
You have squished your figure to fit it into the frame. You can either ignore the frame and draw all that you can fit within it, or you can copy the frame dimensions before starting your drawing. I would recommend pre-framing your stuff for awhile until you are better at guessing the scale of things.
>>2417887
there are fundamentals on appealing design that you can learn. i took Stephen Silvers schoolism course on character design, and it taught me a lot despite his simplistic style. it can really be applied to anything . but i'm not sure where else you could get that info
>>2416372
Why be afraid of failure when that is all you will be doing for the comin year or two when going into drawing? If you are enough of a perfectionist you will be a failure beyond that too, at least according to yourself.
"Failure" is not worth considering at all, and should not demotivate you from further practicing, as no matter how TERRIBLE you may be right now, you will forever improve at a steady rate as long as you put time into it.
If you're a lazy fuck I got no advice though, good luck in that case.
I'm new to using values, how's this?
>>2416127
More like ANTI FLAMATONY AMIRITE?
>>2418039
youre good enough to leave the beginner thread.
>>2417229
i have some friend that honeywrap their comments
and i come to /ic/ to get destroyed
Both help me a lot one make me keep going, the other make me better.
>>2417191
Face the reality that everything you do is fucking trash and will be so for a long time. I'd rather have a post that says "you fucking suck kill yourself" than someone say "great work keep it up", both are equally useless but the first one is true.
i have no idea of what im doing
>>2418074
"you fucking suck keep it up" is the best of both worlds.
evil backs
Critique please.
>>2418174
I would suggest fleshing out the lines out some more to the point it could be considered a finished piece by lines alone before moving onto painting otherwise you might find yourself going through a very grueling process
honestly i draw nothing today
but here is some execercise
>>2418202
Cool excercise. Perspective, rendering and atmospheric perspective all in one. Dig it.
I have trouble understanding the concept of value and color (plus I suck at picking the correct color) so I made a small table with some basic colors. Not finished yet but I just want to try it out. Hopefully this is gonna help me painting rocks and landscape in the long run.
>>2418024
That's what I've always been wondering. I'm actually gonna take up fundamentals of design from Schoolism and CGMA soon as I continue my studies, but I never quiet understood "how to" stylize. People always say to copy, but what am I trying to copy or figure out?
Hopefully those courses will give me some more insight.
>>2418202
just reminded me that i really need to work on capturing depth
When I draw faces from imagination they are never are "looking at the camera". Where do I place the pupils to get this effect?
>>2418452
Just make sure you define the pupil as a black circle (and the iris as a circle but you did that)
As soon as you look away from the camera your iris/pupil/anything circular become ellipses.
>>2417982
A soft enough graphite pencil isn't much different than charcoal. Hell, both are basically just brittle carbon structures.
>>2417887
It's kind of funny how much difficulty ic has when answering this question. They either answer with vague statements or ignore the question all together.
>>2418792
>do this to draw as well as [insert master] xD
As if anyone here was qualified to answer that shit
I assume to get good at circles and oval shapes and such, you just draw a lot of them? i'm asking because loomis head construction apparently requires that I make a good sphere and also I somewhat have problems with those in general
Lot more excited that I found a cross hatch value scale I'm happy with than I should be.
Drapery study
Give critique
I think the mouth looks kinda weird, is it too small, too low or both?
Is the witch fine?
Any advice on how I could make this look better?
>>2418895
Contour lines, he looks a bit flat
>>2418910
Does it explain contour lines in the sticky?
>>2418912
It's a line that goes around your subject to create form.
Please send help
>>2418859
Work on values. All the shadows in your drawing are roughly the same value.
>>2418921
Oh, okay, thanks, I'll try that out and see if it helps
>>2418922
Straight necks make for stiff poses. Gotta be able to change your subjects pose to create better rhythm in your drawings. I.e, you're not needed if it already exists.
i'm taking a break from anatomy studies nad learning to paint digitally, so please cirt this cloud study i did today
>>2418931
like it. looks like actual clouds
>>2418922
I suggest exaggerating the pose even more for gestures so have her point herself even more forward than the reference
I'm very new to figure drawing so I made a little cheat sheet, if anyone would like to use it too.
>>2418988
and here is my drawing.
I'm not very happy with the right forearm, it looks scratchy and i wasnt confident enough with the line. Also, the line to the left of the head is too close to the pectoral line. Other than that, I am pretty happy.
>>2418988
thanks saved it. who knows, might come in handy one day when i move onto figures
>>2419022
what kind of alien is that?
>>2419069

Figure
>>2419144
>that filesize and dimensions
nuh uh i aint touching that
>>2417935
>buys brand pencils for simple gesture drawings
What do if every single time you get a chance to be alone and draw you suddenly lose every shred of motivation?
>>2418931
The wispy look of the upper right part of the cloud looks good. The left side looks a bit too blended. The underside should have a bit more variation in value, and I suppose the same could be said about the top. Try to make the entire cloud like the upper right part and see how it turns out.
>>2419213
thanks, and yeah, i really liked the upper right and i struggled to get that same wispy look with nice edges on the rest of the cloud
ill try to continue it later!
>>2418863
Is the schierke fine?
Yes.
>>2418931
Been using any tutorials, and if so, have any been useful? I feel like I'm not getting something about photoshop painting.
Tell me what resource you're using to learn RIGHT NOW.
>>2419478
its a real shame anzujamu has a shitty taste for shots and photography.
>>2419481
Her drawings are pretty bad too iirc, if you check her twitter.
>>2417453
This shit is going to jump out from behind the closet door.
>>2419022
Shoulders are too droopy, which also makes the neck seem elongated. Other than that, keep practicing the form of the limbs, as you said. Keep it up
>>2419022
Actually scratch that, the neck is just too long. Check the proportions on that thing. Looks like one of those foreign women with the rings on their neck.
>>2419518

>been super helpful in teaching to blend, some basics of the process of digital painting, edges vs shapes vs lines, etc
You know, I've been considering going through ctrlpaint. Guess I'll take that endorsement as a pretty good reason to start. Thanks.
i can.t memorize all head parletts,
just draw more?
>>2417198
Seems like I've actually burnt out, because of studying the wretched fundamentals. I understand those are important, but usually hard as fuck, as a result I'm losing all desire to pick up a pencil again. The last time I had fun drawing was years ago, when I drew cartoon-ish characters from different cartoons/comics/anime. When I try to draw realistic anything, without a doubt it looks shit. I can't draw as well as I'd want to, I believe that is a common issue with everyone here.
I'm trying to do concept art for a game my friend and I want to make. Unfortunately I'm more of a programmer.
Could I get some hate on this please?
>>2419728
hire a professional or find someone more competent.
>>2419745
right one is amazing keep it up
>>2419745
get the fuck out of beginner thread lol
>>2419752
No you
>>2419745
glad you posted in the beginner thread so i could catch this even if it doesn't belong, good work man.
>>2419753
I have. I dont post in this thread unless its to confirm my identity.
>>2419745
sweet
>>2419394
I didnt think anyone on 4chan actually read good stuff
>>2418369
Thanks. Just finished the value scale. For now at least. Might expand when I get more familiar with color theory. It lacks brighter tone of a few colors but it might help other beginner anon out there.
