Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I did the hand-drawing exercise in Bert Dodson's Keys to Drawing (pg. 17). The base of the thumb I didn't draw correctly and so the whole thumb came out looking too big. To get the right proportions I guess I should just restate lines, as the book so far doesn't touch much on the subject.
I was wondering if I should learn some things about drawing proportionally correct before I continue with the book and perhaps other fundamentally necessary things.
Also, should I alongside this book also go learn from drawabox or should I just wait till after I'm done with this book? Any other books I should be working on as well alongside with this one?
Happy to receive critique and other comments.

I don't think a response of "reeks of autism" counts as critique...
>>
>>2409405
Nice job so far, but work on always checking your angles so that your forms don't look wonky.
Honestly, for beginners i struggle between recommending either the skull or full head to learn first. The skull can help you understand how the head works, but construction the entire head form is a lot simpler if you just look up videos from Proko or just any good resource.
Also, there isn't really a need to worry to much about shading right now. I would rather work on getting better lifework and forms at first.
>>
>>2409241
Wait what old driver? I also always had this problem ever since I started drawing but I thought this was a limitation of the digital tools.
Could you please give a link?
>>
>>2409411
You hardly need a grid for a simple piece such as that.

You just draw a big box with a POV from above, that's those stairs. Morph that wall edge a tiny bit to give that minor panoramic effect but you don't need a grid since it's the only object that is morphed.

Everything else can easily be eyeballed because it's partially visible and on the edges.

Also, there is a vanishing point below the drawing in this one, because there is vertical perspective. Check out "3 point perspective", I believe it's called. It's very simple especially if there's just a couple things there.

I can see where the autism comment came from, if this is some sort of sexualized Thomas the Tank Engine fanart, but for criticism of the artwork, here goes:
First of all, if you are going to shade the dark areas, I suggest rendering them in greyscale instead of using hatching. The hatch lines are inconsistent and blend in with the linework, especially around the wheels and piston bars. Get a set of maybe 3 different pencils, one for thin linework, one for light greys, and one for dark greys and blacks. Then fill the spaces with solid grey so that there aren't strips of white in the shaded regions. This will make the shadows more distinct from the details.
The perspective is slightly off from the angles that the front part of the train make and the back part. Get a ruler and recheck the lines. Use 2 point perspective so that the orthogonal parts of the train have the right angle.
For the background, use lighter lines or don't define the edges as sharply. For example the clouds look like nearby solids instead of distant patches of light tones.

The face is actually a big issue... not necessarily it's existence, but I don't think it's in line with the perspective of the train... the eyelids are facing us pretty much straight on, but I'm fairly certain the should not be.

I agree with >>2409550 your hatch marks are messy, so a different shading technique might be better until you can work up your hatching skill... probably practice that on simpler compositions.

Shading in general needs to be in more than just the darkest areas... you're not really utilizing it to give your drawing form.

Trees and clouds could have used some reference on your part... symbols.

adding some amount of texture and content to the foreground of the image would make it look more polished.
>>
>>2409654

Way too many contour lines on the figure on the right, it should be kept to (in my opinion) one at each joint and 1 inbetween the joints, just so you can get a feel for it as a 3D object without going over the top.

Also try having a lighter touch and sharpen your pencil more. If you do a light block in of all the shapes and then darken parts to give more emphasis the figure will look a lot less flat. As it is now the lines are all way too thick over all of the figure. To fix long body just draw and draw and draw. Doing the bargue plates will help you understand proportions and the negative space/shape relation of lines to other lines

not him and I'm too lazy, but I'm guessing what he means is drawing the lines all the way to the horizon.

Parallel lines will have the same vanishing point on the horizon. Go all the way there lightly, and then just darken the lines where the actual box is.

If you're doing a really simple cartoon, maybe.
A big part of what color appears pale is relative to the colors around it and what lights it.
This lady's skin is light purple and not a super bright value either, but she looks pale and white because of her surroundings. If you painted girl in your example the same tone she'd look freaky and purple.
>>
>>2409844

I should amend - the lightest and palest-looking parts of her skin are light purple. There's all sorts of other tones as well, mostly browns.

Does anyone have experience running through Kimon Nicolaides' "The Natural Way to Draw"? I have a lot of free time and I'm trying to figure out the most efficient way possible to structure my study time to get the most technical bang for my buck, so to speak.

Just tearing through drawings without rhyme or reason feels inefficient and I don't think I'm experienced enough to really know how to do that anyway.

>>
>>2410176
It's not good, I would suggest you work on everything and start at a lower level or with less ambitious designs and ideas.

Your anatomy is all wrong, the person is off balance/wonky, everything looks flat and dimensionless, the folds on the clothing doesn't make much sense, there no light source so the shading seems impossible and unnatural; there's probably more wrong with it but I'm just a beginner so what do I know.
>>
>>2410176
its slightly wrong pretty much everywhere so i dont think anyone wants to bother, within being terrible however, I do like it ( excluding the 8 weapons).

the maint point si would address are, reference for folds, body flat, neck too thick, jaw unevent, hand are disgusting ( use form)
, perspective is off( wheres is your horizon, how far are you from the figure? weapons dont affect the belts ( they go under so the belts have to go around, etc.)

Stop doing such complexe stuff and just try to learn a bit of form. (itll help with your shadows!)

When you look at the drawing and can tell where the weight is being placed, as well as what the general pose is
>>
>>2410124
Jaw, eyes, and skull shape are asymmetrical.
The clothing has no folds and is shaded with a flat pillow shading that looks unnatural.
Contour edges on the clothes are really wiggly and don't flow. Then there are straight lines such as the shirt buttons which stand out as mechanical.
The weapons look like they were copy-pasted from some source and look inconsistent with the body.
The anatomy is misshapen, especially in the shoulders, elbows, and knees. His limbs seem too long and skinny.
The shoes are just lazily mirrored.
On top of it, the design is really clashing. He looks like Prince Charming in Napoleonic dress regalia, but he's covered in ammo bandoliers and straps and extra weapons. It's way too cluttered and doesn't convey a plausible character.

so I get how to practice gesture
I can practice real life drawing
I know to get away from symbol drawing
I can practice perspective too
(don't assume I'm good at any of those but I know how to practice them)

but I just don't get how to practice construction, or the 'building blocks'
I read loomis, I know that the blocks are the shapes of things
but how do I actually practice using them!
for example, if I just draw a gesture pose then construct around it, I don't feel like I'm really getting construction at all and it's kind of wasting my time
Same if I draw one of Loomis' cartoon characters, sure I'm copying his construction but it feels so lame

how do I practice construction?
maybe I don't understand it at all, I understand why you do it, but how...

It looks like you just drew diaganol lines on random parts of the face.

What light source would cause shade to fall on a person's lips and the inside of their mouth, but not their teeth, and also the bottom of their nose, but not the bridge of their nose, and also their eyebrows, but not their eyes?

Besides that, some of the eyes look decent.

Good progress but try drawing much larger and keeping the guidlines in the picture.
Fill up the entire sheet of paper and use a ruler to make light pencil lines. Then go over the finished lines in a nice black pen but leave the pencil lines intact so as to show the structure and to remind yourself later how you did it.

Do you set goals for your art?
I'm just getting started with art and I'm also at a stage of my life where I'm starting to respect the idea of setting a goal, then plugging away at it every single day to make it happen.

Will setting artistic goals make me too narrow or will it be constructive?

Looks fine. The whole point of the exercise is to get you used to thinking about perspective and vanishing points. There are books you can read about how to draft perspective drawings, but the goal of this drawing it go give you something that you have real experience in. When you read about this later you will have a realization of "this is that thing I have done before" instead of "this is a thing I have never heard about".

There is something wrong with it however, and it's that the center row of boxes use the center as the vanishing point, while the other corner boxes just have vertical lines and two point perspective. But I say just ink it anyway and try again later with a different drawing where you try a different method. Better to have something finished you can look back on and remember the mistakes than an unfinished thing that you don't move on from.
>>
>>2411291
>>2411322
Repeating what he said, get into the habit of using single bold strokes instead of short scratchy lines. Single strokes give the picture flow and make you look confident. You have infinite undo so you can get a perfect line after a few tries. Put a piece of paper on the tablet to help with the texture.

Draw everything as boxes and wedges at first so you are not distracted trying to make the thing look like an expression.

Practice drawing the circle and setting up the midlines again. Pay attention to the relative ratios. If you are drawing as good a circle as you can manage and following the ratios as closely as possible, you should be able to construct the head as Loomis does.

I made it to the "Now you're ready to draw a profile" of "Drawing with the right side of the brain", This the end result. I still haven't read the shading chapter, but I feel like studying other stuff like getting better at proportions and perspective, I think the book wasn't so helpful on that, and try out Loomis.

Picture I used:

Appreciate the help, guys. Y'know I've always had a habit of drawing small to "save paper" and I guess it's still fucking with me.

Nose and jaw are sticking out too far
Box of chin is too small
Cranium is too small
Ear should be at a more oblique angle
>>

Not too bad. Looks like you are going in the right direction. Try doing a few more similar sketches with photo references and apply the construction techniques of boxes and cylinders.

Okay, I'll review the head proportions chapter.

Need to go back and fix the lighting, but I'm wondering if anyone has a reference pic which shows hair similar to this.

Wtf happend? It looks worst than before man.

Stop coloring and draw some boxes and basic geometry figures. You need to understand the concept of volume first otherwise you won't get anywhere.
