Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up( or do what am i your mom?).

AVOID asking unrelated questions, There is a question thread for that.

Visit the usual "Art book Thread" to find your desired books.

Do not forget to PLEASE RESIZE and crop your images before uploading them. 1kpx is fine.

→ → → → Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," Read the f*cking sticky, it's there for a reason: >>1579290 → → → → → → → → → →

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless. (hint: post something against the rules if you want to be banned)

that would help, but probably your arm gets sore more due to poor posture or not stretching it out enough

take breaks every half hour or so to stretch out your arms (and back too, actually)

working out your shoulders in general is good but unless you have ridiculously weak shoulders you don't really need it for art
>>
if I sat in a room and did nothing but paint all day without explicit direction could I emerge an amazing artist?
>>
>>2406923
That depends.
You would improve, but at what rate?
No one knows. You could hardly improve in the time it took someone else to become a master.
Also, with good effort and the right materials of study, you would improve much faster.
Either way, in the beginning it's difficult.
>>
>>2406928
I ask because in the art courses I've taken there is very rarely any explicit instruction. It mostly ends up being a self-study course with the instructor walking around offering unhelpful, vague comments once in a while. Seems like it would be a better use of money to buy more materials and practice in volume.

Poor pasture sounds about right. I do my stretches often.

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but what would be considered good posture. I only ask, because it seems debatable as to what is the most "optimal" posture when looking it up.
>>
>>2407114
Can we stop this with meme?

>>2407111
Not bad. I'd say, to get a stronger understanding of what you could be doing wrong, try drawing out each part of the anatomy and work simply on those (ie, work on only the arms, then work only on legs, etc etc).

Hampton's book/lectures goes over this really well if you haven't checked that out yet.
>>
>>2407140

Make sure you're not floating your hand over the paper. Whatever surface you're drawing on should be tilted so that it can take part of the weight of your arm. Otherwise your shoulder has to hold your arm up the whole time.
>>
>>2407155
>Make sure you're not floating your hand over the paper

Damn, that's what I've been doing.
My desk is tilted, but small. I guess I can rest my arms on the chair arms and go on from there.
>>
>>2407156

Just be sure to keep your hand resting on the paper while you're drawing.

How do you "set up" scenes you want to draw? Is there a book or guide somewhere? For references like pic related (yes i know it's anime but it's all i have on hand) you can follow the direction of the tiles to find the focal point(s) and the horizon line but if say i wanted to set up a similar scene, besides copying it, i don't know how you would draw a scene from imagination.

Also perspective, that flat shit with the nib jewelry is pretty triggering. Any info regarding head structure would help you out, your thing would have benefited a lot just from better head construction and/or guidelines regarding features, if I were pursuing a stylization like you have I'd might expand the face plane horizonally a smidge to give dem bugeye anime blobs some room to breathe. Those lips are a problem, read a bit like a sneer and I'm not sure if that was intentional on your part, placed slightly poorly, with watercolor it might have been better to only suggest the outline and drop a darker shade for the upper than the lower. Nose probably could have been suggested without line as well.

>>2406847
hair looks weird since you can't find where does it attaches, and you shouldn't do such sharp lines while drawing hair

>>2406923
I will say no. I drew without direction for 5 years straight, 4 hours or so everyday and never improved until doing serious studies...

>>2406936
Talk with your teacher, pretty sure he has some reasoning behind what he's telling you, teachers don't go and tell you "this is wrong because you need to draw it like this, instead they tell you "you need to fix this" so you can find and comprehened why is wrong by observing.

Nobody will spoonfeed you, get that idea out of your head (yes, telling you exactly what to do is spoonfeeding)

>>2406958
all in all, quit painting and get to life drawing classes instead if you can, come back to it once you know the figure and can grasp volume. (nose is wrong, work in your lines, work in the edges of your brow muscles, etc)

>>2406970
necks are never straight, thats why the other anon said that girl face feels weird.
your shading feeels to mudy, no problem with that for a small practice and no idea if that was because of your scaner but if it wasn't look out for that in your future drawings. Work on your feet and hands.

there are other small problems related to gesture but all in all is good.

>>2407074

>>2407084
no idea if this is a serious question or not.
I will respond to if as it was because why the fuck not.

Don't do that, training might not be as fun as you think it should be, if you feel tired of doing studies have some fun studying (not tracing) anime pictures and so, like, if you're drawing faces then do some studies of why they simplify the face in that loli picture you like, what does this line on the cheek means and etc. is all about juggling fun and serious studies while still getting something from the fun part.

if you can't enjoy it then leave it.

Not that guy, but when you refer to direction, and "serious" studies, what do you mean by that? Are you just saying "learn from life and other artists instead of being a fuckass who does the same thing all day and tries to learn in a vacuum" or is there more to it than that?

Your values are too exaggerated in case you wanna work with cross hatching (I tend to make the same mistake as well, teacher always yells me for doing so, can't help it, I just love cross hatching so much), work on your core shadows and then and then add the more complex ones, so you can go back and make your core shadows clearer... or stop working with cross hatching (I also had to)
here's a example of what I am talking about in case you want to keep with the hatching (or pick it back in the future) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHoqh27vQRw
you can also work it with volume lines (curved), is the same principle.

aside from that, the neck is too short, the angle of her right shoulder is off, she has no tits on your picture, the nose is wrong on her right side, the neck is too wide and the face needs to be longer.

you're getting there tho, so keep going.

>>2407088

the eyes aren't on the same line, her eyebrows are too thin, her sideburn looks like it is attached, her mouth is off on her right side. the jaw looks too squared.

I can see you have drawn quite a lot but you need to look into your picture more, once you do this your art will get better.

>>2407111
Read the sticky, you are symbol drawing too much. I personally don't have trouble with lined paper (they're studies, you're supposed to have guidelines and they're not supposed to look profesional either) but don't use it since most art people will get mad at you for doing so, keep those studies private if you want to use lined paper.

>>2407199
work on that line quality anon, and erase once you're done with your study.

outside of that is nothing too notorious (some negative spaces but thats about it)

>>2407205
work less on your rendering, more on your fundamentals (it all looks angled, the eyes are too big, where are your ears at?, brows are too low)

>nose is wrong, work in your lines, work in the edges of your brow muscles, etc
I didn't really use any definite lines, edges, or values even in the sketch for this painting, which should be pretty clear. It was mostly an exercise in how quickly I could get some oil paint down on the canvas which is why there is only a single thin layer in most of it.

To say I should quit painting though is just silly and ill advised. I am very comfortable with volume and drawing the human figure, though that isn't to say I'm not still practicing, but what I'm uncomfortable with is working with paint and in color.

And any good art class will absolutely have an instructor that tells you specifically what you are doing wrong unless it is just studio time. The whole point of taking a class is to get instruction to develop your technical ability. Comments like "nose is wrong" are what you should expect from a bad high school art class. Using physical media requires a lot of very esoteric knowledge of the process which can be learned through experience or, potentially, shortcut with instruction. This is why I asked my question to begin with.

Judging from this and your comments on other drawings I doubt you actually have any idea what you are talking about.
>>
>>2407961
by direction I mean having no goals of what I needed to learn. I knew I wanted to get good at drawing, but not at what fields.
example of a good way of doing this is: my heads look wrong, so I should work on heads.
By studies I mean undestanding, which is something you should know before drawing something, continuing my example:
they look wrong because I don't know how to draw this part and this part, thats because they have this bone and this muscle, so I need to learn how to draw this bone and this muscle.

having a teacher helps with direction and the theory behind studies, no need for art school, upload your drawings/questions here and I am sure some anons will reply, or go to some life drawing classes, that also helps.

moving on

>>2407225
Starting by your horizontal lines, they're supposed to look like a thicker, single line.
add some angled lines to the mix (they don't really ask for this on drawabox but is good to have a handle of, the next exercise is elipses and boxes and you will need to know how to draw angled lines for those boxes)

on a side note, unless you want to get a better control of digital I say you should work on traditional, or you will have to master lines after moving onto the other stuff (say, repeat lesson 1 and 2 endless times)

>>2407243
Is all about composition, nosebro gave you an image that sums it up pretty well, is all about composition and your fundamentals (perspective, construction, etc)

>>2407245
Unix told you pretty much what you need to know, don't add value until you feel confident with your proportions.

>>2407377
draw eyes using boxes, understand the planes of the eye.

>>2407577
you're supposed to draw gestures when you time your stuff and you're not, so either go back and finish it or scrap it because thats now what the intent of a gesture is.

>>2407581
work on your curves, this is for drawabox?

>>2407587
work on traditional media/your lines.

Just came back to read my comment on your post and realize what I said sounds ruder than I intended it to (both because the language barrier and the language barrier and because I am trying to reply as quick as I can while not skipping too much details, I apologize for this)

>I didn't really use any definite lines, edges, or values even in the sketch for this painting which should be pretty clear. It was mostly an exercise in how quickly I could get some oil paint down on the canvas which is why there is only a single thin layer in most of it.

I do notice now, your lines are gestual so it was either timed or painted over a gesture you previously worked on.

Elaborating a bit on my criticism:
nose is wrong: not the all of it is wrong, just the nostril, it is too wide.
work in your lines: here I am dumb, like I pointed above
work in the edges of the brow muscles: I was refering to how you lost the form of the planes of your brow and top of the head

To say I should quit painting though is just silly and ill advised. I am very comfortable with volume and drawing the human figure, though that isn't to say I'm not still practicing, but what I'm uncomfortable with is working with paint and in color.

I actually said this taking into account that you just got into drawing and this being your first class, not as quit it because you're bad at it (seeing a drawing of the head doesn't give away you know how to draw the whole figure, that's what gave me this idea, in case you ask).

I feel as figure drawing classes are essential because most of them also incorporate charcoal and value, essential for painting as you might know.

coming back to your question I still think is something that needs to be talked with your teacher, keep in mind he's teaching other people, and like you say, there are such small bits of information that most likely he will not be able to cover them all, so you will have to ask specific questions of what you want to know.

>the language barrier and the language barrier and that quote

showing my incredible writting skills again.

anyway. as I was saying, if you ask and your teacher is unable to give real criticism or advice then there is a real problem, but just walking around and not helping you if you're working on your piece doesn't seem as something bad, since you're able to work on your piece (I think I teacher shouldn't interrupt you until you're either done or in doubt, alas a piece in process shouldn't be criticized, as it is not finished yet)

and lastly

>Judging from this and your comments on other drawings I doubt you actually have any idea what you are talking about.

I have never claimed to be an expert, nor I am a teacher, I just like to give advice and that's all.

Either way, if you can point to me anything else I said that is wrong let me know, as chances are is something I am applying to my own works.

The problem is that you are offering critiques without having the understanding that makes them constructive, to beginners that would not be able to tell the difference, and besides it's pretty apparent you give them without much thought.

The flared nostril for instance is not even an error, it seems wide because of the way the rest of the nose was rendered.

Your other misunderstandings are not really worth getting into as they can be explained as shortcomings from your language barrier but really, if you are giving 'advice' to people that don't know better you can hurt them much more than help.

>>
>>2408166
No, but your comment is completely worthless and wrong. His values are too organic? What the fuck does that even mean?

The problem here primarily is that he is still not confident with his line strokes. The way he shaded the top part of the fabric shows at least a basic familiarity with how to translate values but his problem is that he isn't familiar with how to render different textures like fur and glass, there he falls back on symbol drawing rather than using his eyes.

Telling him to take his time is constructive but it is such a vague and universal thing to say it does not help anyone if it isn't directed at something specific. For example, he clearly rushed the fabric that is draping over the left side of the table and rendered it lazily without thinking.
>>
>>2408190

muddy/organic means is not consistent, either because you're shading with the side of the pencil and your pressure is not consistent or because you're shading with the tip and leaves countless lines and blank spaces.

shading needs to be consistent, you wanna add more value? then add more presure, less? less pressure.

the main problem is that his drawing has no consistency, his lines and value are too messy, this is because he's working too fast, which is exactly what I said.

it is not helpful if I don't specifically tell him what to do? I am not going to spoonfeed him, and I think thats exactly what you want, and guess what? nobody will because what I told him is enough to let him know he's working too fast.

fuck this, not going to give advice anymore.

A few questions that have been bothering me:

How big of a canvas do you use drawing or painting in photoshop/painter? What are the pixel dimensions?

For lineart, is it just a matter of smooth strokes from the arm rather than the wrist? I'm terrible at that habit.

Do most people save using PNG format? What about scanned images?

Thanks for your redline. Tough head angle.
>>
>>2408426
The more working space you have, the better. Starting out, I'd recommend using the predefined PS A4 paper template (2480x3508@300ppi). The reason is that you want enough pixel density to get good results while not having to do essentially pixel art if you zoom in. Its also a good idea to have a canvas this large (or larger) as you want your final image to be smaller than your working size to eliminate minor issues and artifacts.

PNG is a wasteful format; if you want to save the image without compression just use TIFF or JPEG with max quality. You'd only use PNG if the transparency matters.

I don't understand what you're asking with regards to scanned images. The format you should save a scan with? Pick any using the above info.

I think this is as far as I'm going to take this. This might just be the first thing I ever finished, learned a lot.

i heared about 'understanding mechanism' is more important than draw 1000+ pic
therefore you can draw what you imagine
>>
>>2408662
well understanding the mechanism would involve analyzing what you're drawing while just drawing 1000+ images would imply you're just doing it without much thought. You would still improve either way but understanding it would be a faster method so do both.

Learning how to draw. Just started this year. Thoughts? Tips are welcome! (Using references just for armour and acces.)

Oh, sorry about that size and position. Post from a smartphone.

Where can I learn about rendering in Photoshop? I tried looking it up in ctrl+paint but it looks like this material is behind a paywall. My own attempts at tackling the matter without any help ended up looking horrible so I'd like to get back to basics.

Been struggling with applying Loomis construction into real examples.

What do you think about the redline?

All ctrl+paint paid content is available on cgpeers. But registration is open during two days per month.

Loomis gives constructions for a standard average head but I feel that this reference doesn't have quite the stand anatomy.
What you've done there seems pretty good to me, you might also want to add some of the planes on the forehead but that's up to you
