Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up( or do what am i your mom?).

AVOID asking unrelated questions, There is a question thread for that.

Visit the usual "Art book Thread" to find your desired books.

Do not forget to PLEASE RESIZE and crop your images before uploading them. 1kpx is fine.

→ → → → Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," Read the f*cking sticky, it's there for a reason: >>1579290 → → → → → → → → →

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless. (hint: post something against the rules if you want to be banned)

Can someone please explain something to me?
How does copying reference in 2d , using relationships, angles and shapes, help you improve drawing from imagination?
>>
>>2403580
it doesnt. but it helps breaking symbol drawing

Read the new sticky.

http://ic-sticky.wikia.com
>>
>>2403581
but don't we use symbols when drawing from imagination?
>>
>>2403584
not if youre building out of forms in your imagination.
>>
>>2403556
If someone could make or has a version of this picture with decent resolution id like for you to share it.
>>
>>2403586
but aren't those just more complex symbols?
>>
>>2403592
is a perfect sphere a symbol?
>>
>>2403594
I think so, yeah.
>>
>>2403594
No. A circle would be, I guess.
>>
>>2403581
I should have mentioned that I'm having issues with memorizing complex forms, such as the human skull.

I can draw the basic shapes and random forms I come up with from any angle easily but I guess I just need to keep studying the skulls form. I'm struggling with complex and detailed forms in general.
>>
>>2403594
It depends. If the artist understands it in a 3 dimensional space, and can map out the construction of it then, the artists not using symbol drawing. If the artist draws a circle, and doesn't illustrate that he/she understands it in the space it's put in, then that's symbol drawing.

But, I'm in the beginner thread for a reason. This may not be the case, honestly, just head over to the question thread.
>>
>>2403594
>>2403598
>>2403601
>>2403606
I'm pretty sure a sphere is a symbol, it's just more complex. You always use symbols when you draw from imagination, that's where the whole idea of a "visual library" comes from. When you keep practicing, you "upgrade" your shit tier flat triangle eyes to 3 dimensional forms, but at the end of the day, they're still symbols.
>>
>>2403613
So basically that's the point of drawing from reference... do it a whole lot and you'll have a good memory of it. (among other skills of course) Yes?

he's right though. although those 'symbols' used by masters are understood so clearly in 3 dimensions they do not resemble at all noobie symbols
>>

hand studies from earlier today. also tried to stylize from real life a bit; i drew the big hands first and the small stylized ones second

small question: how do you prevent the paper from smudging excessively or getting too dark when drawing? this time i spilled a bit of water on the paper but other times it still looks smudged.
>>
>>2403679
Fingernails are symbol drawing.
>>
>>2403679
2 ideas:

1) use a basically a mahl stick, like painters do, to rest your hand on
2) Get a transparency sheet and put it under where your hand might touch the paper. Careful to not slide it around too much.

wash your hands before drawing and when needed after sharpening.

Get some of these. They come in a pack of 3 at Kroger. You can probably find them at walgreens too for a few bucks. Basically they're made of magic.
>>
>>2403688
You're symbol symbol.
>>
>>2403683
yeah, i think where i messed up on finger construction/foreshortening really shows because i found myself often having no clue how to draw the nails and just resorted to symbols

>>2403690
yeah, good idea. i'm using a staedler (mars plastic) right now, but since i draw on such a small scale (average letter size paper) that the eraser's useless when blunt

i think i just need to start drawing bigger and being more confident in my lines so i don't chickenscratch as much and end up smudging the page

also PROTIP: if you're left handed (like me) draw from right to left so you don't get smudges on your pinky and palm

photos tend to warp perspective and since photos don't have the benefit of being viewable in 3d with your eyes' stereoscopic vision, unlike real forms from life, understanding how forms work in perspective is harder with photos

however if you don't have access to life drawing resources, well, you make do

I started on the Loomis circle exercises today.
They look garbage as expected, but I'm gonna stick to it. But is there anything else I should be doing on the side? And how long should I focus on the circles before moving to the ball?

Sadly, yes. The point is to build confidence in your lines without erasing.
You should have a pigment liner.
Either a steadler or sakura etc.

you should aspire to learn from real life what makes things more appealing
and how does you make your drawing read more or feel better

you can see it's a dog head, but the whole body seems awful

you need to make a distinction between drawing and painting

in painting you use edges and value

what you have there is a colored drawing

How else are you gonna get better at imagining accurate things, other than first knowing how said things are in reality?

At your level I think you should spend a little more time on your studies. 10 minutes apparently isn't enough for you to break out of symbol drawing mode.

>>
>>2405125
Are you visualizing the solid forms?
It looks like you are just copying the contours.
Try drawing spheres and wrap ellipses around them. Think all around the ball of the cranium.
Break it down into simple shapes and matter drawing those shapes first.
Draw the box like jaw shape from all the angles you can think of as well, then come back to the complex form.
>>
>>2405140
I meant master, not matter.
Auto correct a stupid.
>>
>>2405125
Try drawing the jaw and other features using a single clean stroke, like you did the cranium. Don't use chickenscratch (small short strokes to build a large stroke) unless you are going for a particular effect. Also try a brush with some width and pressure sensitivity, since the single pixel line won't convey the flow of your hand as much.
>>

cranium (and some construction lines) is circle tool; you can tell because of the even, perfect progression when it comes to pixel lengths

Better?

>>2405215
Free deform but point taken.
>>
>>2405250
I know it's being recommended a lot but there's a reason why it is.
You should do all the drawabox lessons first.
Then go back to Loomis and Hampton etc.
>>
>>2405250
That looks way better from the standpoint of line confidence. It will make you think about the shape ahead of time and try to produce the stroke confidently. When you are working digitally you have layers and infinite undo, so you can be bold, as long as you feel that you are placing the lines where they should go.

Chickenscratch can be used with a low opacity brush to build up density for shading or when you just want to scribble in some volume to experiment. Also if you are rendering a fuzzy or fluffy texture and you want to show that with a contour line. But I recommend you make them be smooth in order to convey a more natural flow.
>>
>>2405233
Do have a photo reference or a model skull to turn in your hand to look at? It's not bad as just a slice of a study for a larger picture. I might suggest you try decomposing the skull into volumes and drawing planes to get a sense of proportion.

Not bad. You seem to have good control over your pressure and values. I suggest not bolding in the contour lines and instead using value to define the edge between the object and the background, since real life things rarely have a defined black cartoon edge. Also try using perspective on the circular parts such as the thumbhole and hinge. Make a cleaner ellipse shape squashed proportional to the viewing angle.

You seem to be confusing color tones with shading, color tone and shading tones should be taken into consideration so a darker color would have a darker shade tone.

>>2405499
You did so many nice looking 3d shape but I feel you didn't really apply them to the face. Also the hair is just another 3d shape. I would suggest you study statues and sculpture to learn how they do hair, it might give you an understanding on how to do hair and faces in general.

Another little thing I notice but could be wrong is that you sometimes don't shade with the side of the pencils (most noticeably in the apples), this could be because your pencils isn't sharpened enough or you're not holding it properly, I dunno.

Try to show some texture. It looks like your puffing is made out of matte material. There are a few different surfaces that react differently to light in the reference. Mainly the hair and the beak. Look at them carefully and then try to convey them on your canvas. Try using different brushes. I used a transparent brush for the hair and it turned out alright.
>>
>>2405528
Yeah, I noticed that was happening a bit too often afterward.
I'll do the half page and full page lines tomorrow, and then the day after I'll go bad over and do the whole thing again.
I probably won't post my homework everyday, as I doubt you guys wanna see a bunch of crooked lines on a day-to-day basis.
Thanks for the critique though, I was more focused on the body of the line and I think I must've been instinctively flicking my wrist at the end of them.
>>
>>2405525
thank you, you made some really good points on wich I'll try to improve

all the apples except the top one were just really rough studies to get a sense of the form so I did some rather lazy shading

The shading is definitely needs refining though, I'll try holding the pen differently

Those are some shaky lines, but that's okay, do a bit more and you will improve. Try not to be too fast, but not too slow.
It is a great help if you(for the very couple of first times use ruler for straight line and then superimpose on top of it.

Biggest problem of drawabox in my opinion is that it's author is using greatly watered down Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching and some other readily available through internet master sources filtered through prism of his own competence(which is obviously pales in comparison with actual working professionals).

Which means two things.
First, do not read his explanations and learn theory from Han himself, Robertson, Vandruff, Villpu, Hampton, etc.
Second, you can still do his exercises, they are pretty gud. You can even think about your own exercises that will fit yo. I like for instance doing some of these on pic in addition to usual 2point line and ellipse blob constructions as warm-up. Just don't make them the only thing you do. I mean, you should doodle along with exercises. Do something creative, to preserve the flame. I didn't with mine(went way too far into advanced perspective) so I have a hard time now trying to regain this creative spark. So be warned.
>>
>>2405544
I-I was drawing my lines over already ruled ones.
But thanks for the advice, some of the theory I was reading on Drawabox kinda confused me, I'll be honest.
I'm planning on doing two hours a day, with one hour of the Drawabox exercises as warmups, followed by an hour of studying Vlippu or Loomis, or whatever I feel like for the day.
Also I blame my shaky lines on my schooling, science diagrams don't play nice with straight lines, especially while under a time limit. Is there any advice you could give me as for what I should be doing as "creative exercises", other than the typical Loomis faces I've been butchering, I'm not sure of what else to do.

I read the sticky and it listed a few options but I don't know which to start with.
>>
>>2405556
My advice are be more careful about the angles between things like the eyebrows and eye; and the mouth and chin area.
Also notice her chin actually go around the mouth but you sorta just hard outlined it which give her a odd looking chin.
For your shade I would maybe suggest you put less strength into it cause you can see your shading strokes in the hair instead slowly build it up and blend the stroke together.

In all seriousness you don't really need perfect straight lines, we're not a machines and even pros fuck up. You need approximate straight, which means it can curve a bit, that's okay. End goal of straight line is to connect points in space, and you always have ruler with you, if you know where it lands, what's in between isn't really a problem, you can always blow it on xerox or add new layer in digital and do neat overlay with ruler or line tool.

There is no set rule or guideline on how to approach creative things... I'm struggling with these myself. You can read Sketching the Basics series of books to learn what ways designers use to cope with this problem. You can also look at Robertson's "Skillful Huntsman", which will help too

You again? What the hell are you trying to accomplish by posting random blobs that are both flat and ugly. They are hardly better than stickman which most people drew at about age 3.

I should still use lines for sketching it though right? I normally would try to get rid of lines if I finish things, but I'm thinking about doing quick ones with rough base colors on, as I feel like I'm wasting my time rendering when I still make day-one measuring/sketching mistakes.

Is the orbis the holes of the eyes? If so, yes. Makes it look like catwoman/spiderman masks. After comparing over the ref, I also made the chin too long, and the eyes not wide enough. Which I never realized. This is specifically why I took a step back and was trying to do a quantity of rough sketches. Hopefully one day I'll stop fucking up the very first step of a drawing.

What do you guys do for measuring on digital? Do you actually measure angles and proportions with your pen? Or is that a thing only for traditional?

everything is too white, you can easily reach a 5 ( 0 white 10 black) with your apples. but everything is a 2 except the top one who reaches 4
