I was just made aware of this "Famous Artist's Cartoon Course" through an artist I follow on facebook yesterday.

While it was freely available on this site: http://randomnerds.com/learn-to-draw-cartoons-with-the-now-public-domain-famous-artist-cartoon-course-textbook/ since June of last year, it's divided up into 18 sections and at a cursory glance I wasn't able to find it "complete" anywhere else. For convenience's sake I've compartmentalized it into a single 271 page .pdf, uploaded it to my mega folder and organized these separate "lessons" into chapters. Check it out.

Just from flipping through it there definitely appears to be a lot of solid material here; a good consolidation of cartooning and formal drawing techniques (perspective, foreshortening etc.).

There are a handful of illustrations that look to be "homages" of Loomis plates from FWAP and FDFAIW, but this book goes into a lot of detail where FWAP in particular trails off towards the end. The art styles within vary wildly, some could be considered "dated" or even just "shitty" in general and that might be a put off to some, though. It appears that up to 10 artists have all contributed to it.

Firez I'd advise caution critiquing anybody's eyes.

While your correction is an improvement for sure, you did what you always do and just faded the fuck out of the eyes and made her look like she's done a few too many tours in Vietnam.

Every time you do eyes you do the same thing. They all look like PTSD survivors or fishmonsters or some shit. Maybe it's a stylistic choice but I hope you realize it looks strange.

Cool anon, there are 2 consistent things that bother me in your drawings.

-The way you draw eyes
-Proportions (particularly the girth of the neck)

Here is an idea, it probably detours on what you want to achieve but I hope it helps, if you can't do construction at this moment at least try to keep features on the same level (for instance take your stylus and match the angle of the mouth, replicate said angle in the nose and eyes to keep things more consistent.

Shape of the face also had issues, try to get an appealing shape before laying down you features.

And finally have form always present in your mind, use values to make things turn and create a solid sense of 3D

Please keep going I quite liked that girl in sweater you seem to have made with graphite pencil the other day, it is obvious you have an aesthetic sense but you seem to be rushing out too much.
>>
>>2401580
Symbol drawing feets, try to understand draw their shape. It's not usually the hardest part of the body to draw for nothing.
>>
>>2401591
What the fuck is up with you and lifeless eyes
>>
>>2401590
I am actually very cautious whenever I give advice about anything.

I may be a noob but there are things I know for sure. As for the eyes...well It seemed to be fitting judging by his original drawing and leaving the pupils a bit blurred out doesn't make a strong commitment to perfection that discourages people while it helps you to complete the rest in your mind by creating a slight hint that is good enough to be characteristic (I have some strongly defined eyes in my finished works that started this way).

Just a beginner, but I'll show you what I can see. First, your feet are splayed very widely in a somewhat extreme angle. Second, they don't have any structure(study feets!). you need to define the heel, arch, toebox, ankle. A bit of different positioning between them(from the hip down) helps it feel more natural as well.

its good because your anatomy is good ( ie legs structure, arm flow, hand size, face size, good bow symmetry, its bad because the details are terrible one eye missing, wings dont work, face features are inelaborate, clavicle is too wiggly.

Basically, Someone who draws well can see the leg and see that you're good, someone who doesnt draw will only see the bad details. I think you might want to draw bigger so you can get your details in properly.

Thanks for taking the time to redraw my work. I really appreciate that Firez. Gracias!

I try to make them ASAP. I want to eventually make them like Kron in less of 1 hour. Probably I shoudn´t rush.
But is it possible to make them good and with a professional look in that amount of time?

I hate taking so much time to make a painting. For instance the rendering of the skull study took me more than 1 hour and I used a reference.. I hate that.

I redraw following your advice. However:

Does the girth of the neck look that bad? the neck seems matching to one of normal women...

The light is coming lightly from the left. and the yes are looking down to spectator or the camera below.

Thanks it was a digital sketch of a photo.

I will keep going ;)

no lie, i really like that piece from a stylistic standpoint, the super minimal detail (this includes there only being one eye), the slight wobble to the lines, the wings looking like a prop from some high school play, i personally find it unique and interesting

all the things the other anon said are good crits, but they're also things that i really like this piece for, that's the catch 22 of "style", but keep in mind it is an acquired taste and if you're trying to go for commercial viability it will get a less than immediate response most likely.

No problem, glad to know it helps.

Por cierto me olvide por un momento que hablas español pero de momento dejaré el resto en Inglés talvéz todo esto le sirva a alguien más.

>But is it possible to make them good and with a professional look in that amount of time?

I honestly don't know but if I were to take a guess I would say "no" at least not in the case of proper professional level illustrations.

I do remember when I started that I had this idea of eventually uploading speed painting videos to my YT channel but after getting reality checked by how much I suck and how much effort it takes me to come up with something vaguely decent I abandoned the idea.

>I hate taking so much time to make a painting. For instance the rendering of the skull study took me more than 1 hour and I used a reference.. I hate that.

You really need to develop patience, learn to love the drudgery of the process,

I would admit I have taken this to the extreme and making several quick "false" starts on the side would have helped me even more but if you really want to come up with something that pleases you that will not happen by chance it's a really concious process, eventually you may internalize some steps but the mental effort is always there.

>Does the girth of the neck look that bad? the neck seems matching to one of normal women...

The thing is that this kind of things can be very relative, for instance you've a tiny body and a stylized character, hence the proportion of the neck in relation to the other elements seems odd. if you were to use more realistically proportioned shoulders and face features it would fit.

>The light is coming lightly from the left. and the yes are looking down to spectator or the camera below.

>Thanks it was a digital sketch of a photo.

I take you're using it as a vague reference, if this is the case Why don't you try to study it instead?

More drawings from me. Nose or no? What facial features (asides from eyes, obv) should I change, exaggerate, or omit when maximizing cuteness?
>>
>>2403285
You didn't choose a very good artist to use as an example. It looks fine from the front, but the guys draws really weird heads, and all sense of form and perspective goes out the window when he goes for a 3/4 view. Everything just sinks into the skull, and they grow a weird snout.

>>2403280
Best advice is to understand that you're not just drawing the face on a flat surface. The eyes, nose and mouth actually have form, and follow and shape the contours of the face.
It's most important when drawing the eyes and eyebrows, as they shape the surface of the face. The nose works as a good landmark, while the mouth should follow the contour of the jaw and chin.
>>
>>2403296
That nose is ugly as sin, try to simplify it. And why is the interior lf the mouth so tiny? Don't detail it too much either.
>>
>>2403302
Don't talk shit about Asanagi man. The faces s/he draws are totally fine, I put them here because they have a more "original" structure, to show even for cute anime faces there can be a lot of variety.

First day adventuring into backgrounds (literally) this is my first drawing with a background (began drawing 1 month ago)

Wanted to draw some kind of mountain oasis but i guess i failed
>>
>>2403495
thanks! I might ink the lines, at the very least. It takes me forever to render stuff though, so I'm not sure about color.

>>2403499
wow, nice progress for 1 month. I don't know if you tried using reference for the back ground yet, but it always helps even with stylized work.
>>
>>2403499
you managed to say you were new twice in a comment.

What im alluding to his the fact that your grass on the far planes of the ground is the same density ( particles or blades of grass/size) per square area as before. Try using one of those perspective grids and put the same amount per square and youll see what i mean. Additionally, you didnt blend the mountains into the ground they just start. This works if theyre further away, but its broken by current perspective.
>>
>>2403513
Thank you! That is relly encouraging

About reference, no i went by memory and imagination with the help of googling how to draw a mountain and sky
>>
>>2403519
Thank you will try to fix the grass,

About the mountains... i wanted her to be in one of those "green islands" u can see in the nearest mountain, but i guess i failed
>>
>>2403484
Learn basic anatomy, perpective and landscape. Even if you only want to draw anime stuff your future artwork will greatly benefit from those fundamentals.

The wolf's face has lots of small structural asymmetries which makes it look grotesque. I'm not sure about canine eye anatomy but he looks walleyed like they aren't facing the same direction. Mononoke's pose is stiff and her arms are different lengths. I won't complain about the face other than to say she looks like an attractive older woman, which clash with Studio Ghibli's original depiction
>>
>>2405320
Here's the difference between stylized and muh style, summed up in 6 easy to remember words: Did you get away with it? If you can look at it and it feels right even when it's technically wrong, they got away with it. It looks intentional and coherent, it's style. If you look at it and you know what they were TRYING to do, they didn't get away with it. They didn't sell it, and trying to sell it after the fact by verbalizing what you already know they were trying to do is known as muh styling. Style doesn't need to be supported by explanation, if it does, it's muh style. This also doesn't mean style excuses errors. If there's a visible error ie something that feels wrong, they didn't get away with it. Style is a plan, not a diversion. Now you know, and knowing is half the etc.
>>
>>2405320
I don't agree, the structure of her chin, mouth, and nose suggest that the further eye should be brought down to the level of her nose. Or else the whole jaw should be rotated up to match the level of the eye.

You seem to be trying to render symbol drawing and doing fairly well at it. Her facial features appear to have some depth and all, but that ear looks to be just as deep in her face as her nose and sticks out the same direction as her shoulders and her hair is trying to flow with and around it which means you weren't actually thinking in three dimensions, just trying to get what you feel should be there, there. Perhaps I'm wrong and someone more experienced could point you in a better direction, though.

You mean having better skills at anatomy and shit? Overall it's this one, but like >>2405845 said it also depends.

Overall, better render with less good technique is more popular with normies than bad render with good technique, but that's the opposite for artists and here.

Nose is small and ugly and has no shading around the cheek. The structure of the face is too tall. The hair is uniformly shaded with no prominent light source. The texture of the scruffy hair at the top of her head is inconsistent from the hanging part. She has ugly red blotches around her eyes. The ear is too high up and doesn't connect with the chin or line up with the mouth. The neck is too long. The shoulder doesn't line up with the scapula. The folds of the cloth around the shoulder are wrong.
>>
>>2406151
Thanks! I can see most of these now, but what do you mean by the ear doesnt line up with the mouth?
>>
>>2406158
The top of the ear should line up with the eyeline and the bottom of the ear should line up with the mouthline. It might be the case that the top of the ear being covered by hair means that the ear is as tall as the distance between the mouth and eyes, but then the perspective requires her head to be tilted down. From the construction and the neck that doesn't seem to be the case, so the ear is either too high up or too short.

The ear lines up with the top of the brow and the bottom of the nose man. But its k the other things you pointed out were fine bro

you're desperately getting ahead of yourself here

your curves aren't representing form well enough and you're mistaking the contours of the head as the actual form of it, and the face and head look bulbous this way unfortunately

also you're not going to get any good lineart done drawing with your pen set so wide. What are you doing

Is lightning scar I will have to fix it because it's too flat atm
>>
>>2406284
I didn't intend to draw any more than a quick set of thick lines just to suggest curvature.
Anyway the artist is done with that picture so the discussion is just for next time. I don't need to defend throwaway redlines done in seconds to demonstrate an idea.

are you unaware of your lack of skill or are you severely mis-remembering the quality of my redlines?
